Scriptures: Psalms 23:1-3, Psalms 139:13-16, Jeremiah 29:11-13, Proverbs 21:1, Ecclesiastes 3:11-12

Over the next few weeks, I want to talk about Divine Appointments and Connections.

What are Divine Appointments and Connections?

These are the special times during our life when it seems you experienced a scheduled or random appointment with someone, and the appointment became a life-changing connection. You were at the correct place at the correct time. Perhaps a little earlier and you would miss it. A little later and you would have missed it. This connection held the key to your future or opened a door(s) to someone who did. These appointments and connections direct, change, and control your life. An example would be meeting your spouse, encountering someone who did something special for you, or encountering someone who knew someone who knew someone. The fact is the appointment and connection led to something life-changing.

Coincidental, Accidental, or Divine?

We all need special connections throughout life if we are going to have and enjoy the lives of happiness we all want. Success and happiness in life require many such encounters. If we stop and think, we’ll realize our lives are a series of appointments and connections. Likely anything of any major relevance that’s happened in your life materialized through a series of appointments and connections. We usually think we made these times happen, or they were an accident, coincidence, or chance. We think it was by chance we met this person who connected us with another person who set up an appointment with someone else.

For example, meeting your spouse likely requires a series of appointments and connections. Meeting your spouse was a serious connection. Perhaps your occupation came through a series of events and people. Major things have happened in your life requiring a connection with someone.

Were these connections and appointments coincidental and accidental? Or, was there something supernatural and divine about them? They were divine connections and appointments. Was something supernatural happening in the background for your benefit? Could it be the Lord actually set up these connections as he directed your life? Was he opening doors for you as he led you to your destiny and happy (blessed) life, as a shepherd leads his sheep to green pastures and still waters?

Psalms 23:1-3 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, HE LEADS ME beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. HE GUIDES ME IN PATHS of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Isn’t it amazing how we’ve quoted this passage all our lives, but never think about how the Lord actually leads us?

One way he leads us is by divine appointments and connections. I have learned these special times of appointments and connections are supernatural. There’s no other way to explain them. The Lord sets up these encounters along life’s way leading us and guiding us to the green pastures and still waters of life. To me, there is no better way of seeing the sovereign hand of God moving in my life and in the lives of people than through divine connections and appointments. These times are not coincidental or accidental. They are supernatural and divine. Nothing raises my faith more than looking back at my life and seeing how the Good Shepherd guided me and to look at the lives of others and how he guided them. It was not coincidental or accidental. It was divine appointments and connections.

THERE ARE DIVINE PLANS FOR YOU!

We read the writings of an amazingly successful and powerful king in Psalms. His name was David. His life was a series of divine appointments and connections. In Psalms 139 David wrote an astonishing thought.

Psalms 139:13-16 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. ALL THE DAYS ORDAINED FOR ME WERE WRITTEN IN YOUR BOOK BEFORE ONE OF THEM CAME TO BE.

The New Living Translation writes verse 16 this way.

Psalms 139:16 You saw me before I was born. EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE WAS RECORDED IN YOUR BOOK. EVERY MOMENT WAS LAID OUT BEFORE A SINGLE DAY HAD PASSED.

Far wiser and far more successful people than most of us will ever be, realized there was something supernatural about their birth. Their birth and days were not accidental, coincidental, or chance. They realized they were formed by God to do amazing things. The Lord ordained their lives. Their days were planned and written in God’s book before the first one happened.

You and I should know there are supernatural plans already in place for us also. God promises us he has already made plans for our futures.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 For I know the PLANS I HAVE FOR YOU,” declares the LORD, “PLANS TO prosper you and not to harm you, PLANS TO give you hope and a FUTURE. THEN you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Realizing the Lord God has plans for us will cause our faith to rise. Realizing he has plans will cause us to then call upon him, pray, and listen. Our talking about divine appointments and connections should tune us into the Lord God and will cause us to seek him with our hearts.

The Lord already has supernatural divine plans for your future. In fact, he has many divine plans (plural) designed specifically for you. He has plans for your prosperity. These plans will require many appointments and connections. He has plans to give you hope when things aren’t going as you wish they would. Also, He has people already set up to encourage you. Moreover, the Lord has plans for your future. It will require many divine appointments and connections for these plans to work out and become reality. If the Lord God has already made plans, then he has already set up the appointments and connections necessary.

Exactly as God places desires, dreams, and visions into our hearts (Ezr 7:27; Neh 2:12; 7:5; Act 2:17; 2Co 8:16), he’s already made plans for you. His plans are for you to connect with the people necessary to fulfill your dreams, desires, and visions. Realizing this should cause us to seek him and listen. The more we seek and listen, the closer we’ll stick to his plans for us.

Plans for You sermon video audio notes

These are God’s plans. God will bring the people into our lives necessary to open the doors of opportunity we need to be opened in life. He knows who you need to meet, know, and connect with today and who you will need to meet, know, and connect with ten years from today. He’s the only one who does know. These are his plans, and he will cause it to happen.

If you are not married, do you believe God has the right mate for you in your future?

He not only knows who it is but also knows what and who will be necessary to connect you with the events leading you to your spouse and your spouse to you. There must be an intersection. He’s already made plans for the intersection to happen. How many divine connections and appointments will this one encounter require? You can’t make this happen, but God can. Do you want to leave it to accident, chance, and consequence? You could easily marry the wrong person if you leave it to chance. Or, you could begin to seek the Lord and listen to him. Ask him to guide you.

(NLT) Proverbs 21:1 The king’s heart is like a stream of water directed by the LORD; he turns it wherever he pleases.

Allow the Lord to direct your heart. You will experience his plans, appointments, and connections.

A FEW DIVINE APPOINTMENT AND CONNECTION STORIES

I was born in Miami Florida. My parents moved to middle Georgia when I was six years old. When I was about 16 years of age, I was the leader of our student ministry at the church I attended. Our group was going to a youth camp. I worked and couldn’t get off to attend. I wanted to go, and I asked off, but it didn’t work out. I’d given up on going. Amazingly, someone came from out of state and offered to do my job so I could go. I was allowed to be off, and I went. There at the youth camp, I met the beautiful girl who a few years later became the most remarkable wife. Fifty years later we have two children, an amazing son-in-law, an amazing daughter-in-law, and four wonderful grandsons. What would have happened had we not met?

Don and Shelia

There’s an elder in our church who lived in a small town in Arkansas. His name is Don. When he was eighteen, his parents took him to Dallas Texas to attend a railroad school, dropped him off at a boarding house, and left him to fend for himself. While going to school, he got a job. Across the street, working at a café in a pharmacy, he met a high school girl named Shelia, who became his wife. He didn’t go from Arkansas to Dallas to go to railroad school. Don never went to work for the railroad. So, he went to Dallas as God directed his heart to meet his wife. They married over fifty years ago and now have two sons and six grandchildren. Was all this simply chance, or was God fulfilling his plans?

John and Angela

Another couple in our church experienced an obvious divine appointment and connection. Angela was born and raised in a small town in north Georgia. John was born and raised in Toronto Canada. Angela was changing jobs, accepted one job offer, but received an offer from a different company and decided to take the second offer. John, in Toronto Canada, worked for a family business. It was expanding lines. John’s uncle selected the company Angela now worked with as a place from where they would purchase. The new line did well until problems began forcing John to call the company in Georgia.

After several more defective shipments and calls, by mistake, John was routed to someone different – Angela. The divine connection happened on the phone. Angela’s boss told her to go to Canada and take care of the problem. She made the appointment. While in Canada checking out the problem, John gave her a tour of Toronto and Niagara Falls. Sounds like a movie doesn’t it? She not only got a new job, she got her husband. He got his wife. A few years later, I had the honor of performing their wedding ceremony. Today they have a beautiful daughter. How in the world do things like this just happen? It’s divine appointments and encounters.

Kevin and Gailynn

Another elder and his wife met through an obvious divine appointment and connection. Gailynn lived in a small rural town in middle Georgia. Kevin lived in the San Francisco Bay area of California. He’d done drugs and alcohol. God was dealing with him and recently cleaned himself up. She’d moved from her small rural town to the San Francisco area to live with a relative and go to college. She got a job in the meantime and asked a coworker if she knew anyone who didn’t do drugs or alcohol.

The coworker said the only person she knew lived across the street from her. They made the divine appointment and the divine connection happened. They married and moved back to Georgia and eventually met me. Five children and five grandchildren later his words are, “Gailynn is just what I needed, and I am just what she needed. I am so thankful and grateful to God for my wife.” Coincidence? I don’t think so.

My Family

I’ll use this and move on. We lived in a medium-sized city in middle Georgia. I moved our family to a small town in North Georgia where I became the lead pastor of the church I’ve served since. It was in our small town our daughter met her husband. Today they have two children. What would have happened had I not moved? I don’t want to think about it, but God had it all planned out. In my seeking the Lord and listening to him, he directed my heart.

Our son, while working with me at our church, was introduced to his wife through a friend my son met in our church in North Georgia. She was raised and lived on the coast in South Alabama. My son’s friend and wife (who is from Mexico! – another astonishing story) moved to South Alabama. There they met the woman who managed the complex where they lived, thought about my son, and invited him to South Alabama to meet her. They met in their divine appointment and experienced a divine connection. Today, they have two children. What if…?

You can’t make this stuff up.

I’m certain you have your own divine appointments and connections stories. My job is to get you thinking about them and looking for them. There about how you met your spouse, or how you connected with your employment, or how you purchased your house, or some other supernatural appointment and connection. Was your encounter simply hap chance? Was it simply an accident, consequence, or chance? Or, was it a divine appointment and connection planned and directed especially for you by our Good Shepherd?

I’ll end this with this beautiful scripture from Ecclesiastes that I plan to use and talk about later.

Ecclesiastes 3:11-12 He has made everything beautiful in its time. HE HAS ALSO SET ETERNITY IN THE HEARTS OF MEN; yet they cannot fathom WHAT GOD HAS DONE FROM BEGINNING TO END. I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live.

Your eternity is already in your heart. God wants you happy. He wants you to do good while you live. He has made everything beautiful for you in your time. One of the ways he does is by divine appointments and connections. He has plans for you from beginning to end. It’s all planned. Seek the Lord and listen.
