Father’s Day Special: Learn to Call Your Husband

Call Your Husband Father’s Day sermon video audio notes. From an email: Father’s Day is a tough day for some of us. Not only those who lost their Fathers through death suffered. There are some of us who suffer because our Fathers live, and yet remain dead to us. While I try to focus on the positive aspects of Father’s Day, it is difficult to do this when I have a Father living less than 10 miles away who may as well be millions away. Father’s Day causes a sense of dread to well up in me. I dread going to see my natural Father… Husband, don’t let this be you.

Today is Father’s Day. I want to thank all our dads for being here today. You are to be honored, appreciated, and even revered. Would you please stand if you are a dad and allow us to give you a handclap? Please remain standing and allow me to pray over you and bless you. I am proud of our Life Gate dads. I think we have some of the best dads anywhere.

This is from an email I received. I want to read a part of it.

“Father’s day is a tough day for some of us. Not only those that have lost their Fathers through death suffered. There are some of us that suffer because our Fathers live, and yet remain dead to us. While I try to focus on the positive aspects of Father’s day, it is difficult to do this when I have a Father living less than 10 miles away who may as well be millions away. Father’s day causes a sense of dread to well up in me. I dread going to see my natural Father because I never know how the visit will go…

Having a Father that offers living water is crucial to having a family that is immersed in LIFE… if you will allow me, I had no idea of what real LIFE is until I met you and your family. I could see that you all had something that was very different than what I had as a child. What was it? Simple…you had living water that flowed from your innermost being and washed everyone and everything that it came into contact with…”

Father’s Day Special: Learn to Call Your Husband

There are fathers who bring life and there are men who have sired children, but though living, are dead and serve up death to their wives, children, and grandchildren. So, today’s Father’s Day lesson will be a little different than my normal.

Call Your Husband Father’s Day sermon

In the book of St John chapter four, we are given a story about Jesus and a woman who had an encounter at Jacob’s well. Toward the end of that story, the woman leaves the well and does an interesting thing.

John 4:28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

John 4:29 “Come, see a man…”

Isn’t it interesting that she said to men, Come, see a man? What is the makeup of a man worth coming to see? What is it one man possesses that is impressive enough for a woman to tell other men to come and see? So, what is it my wife, family, and people see when they look at me?

Father’s Day Special: Learn to Call Your Husband

Allow me to refresh our memories about the story in John chapter four. Jesus and his disciples were traveling through an area north of Jerusalem called Samaria. The Samaritans were once Hebrew people who rebelled against Solomon’s son Rehoboam. Ten tribes were annexed from the original nation and called themselves Israel. The remaining nation was called Judah. Israel heavily worshiped idols. That is important because what our fathers worshiped and idolized has a tremendous effect on us. Eventually, God judged that idol worship by bringing Nebuchadnezzar’s army and taking Israel captive. Nebuchadnezzar then brought people from every place possible with every religion possible and the Samaritans became mixed people racially and spiritually.

One day Jesus met this Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. He immediately began reaching out to her by simply asking for a drink of water. It surprised the woman that a Jewish man would speak to her. Jesus turned the conversation from natural water to spiritual living water that Jesus offered. Jesus told the woman that she could drink living water and never thirst again.

I am going to show you that verse, but it’s not only that verse that I want us to see as much as I want us to see what Jesus said next and I do mean next.

Father’s Day Special: Learn to Call Your Husband

John 4:15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

John 4:16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”

Jesus abruptly changed the subject, OR DID HE? Too often when we are reading the Bible we miss important points thinking that the subject changed. When you hit something like this abrupt change, let it scream at you and allow it to say, “Wait a minute. There is more here.” The woman wanted salvation. Jesus would not abruptly change the subject. This woman’s living water concerned her husband. GO, CALL YOUR HUSBAND. It would be her husband coming with her to Jesus that would provide it.

Jesus hadn’t changed subjects. We see this is true by looking at the life this woman had experienced. Her thirst concerned her need for a husband.

John 4:16-18

16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”

17 “I have no husband,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband.

18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husbandWHAT YOU HAVE JUST SAID IS QUITE TRUE.”

Father’s Day Special: Learn to Call Your Husband

A man does not make a husband and having a marriage license does not make a husband or father either. A husband and a father will provide living water.

The woman at the well was searching for a relationship that could satisfy her thirst. Her simply having a man did not quench her thirst as that verse obviously shows. How many relationships with men does it take to quench that thirst? Will five do it or maybe six? How many marriages does it require?

I want to make certain that we see this from another viewpoint too. A woman’s finding Jesus alone will not satisfy her thirst. This woman was there with Jesus, but she still had thirst. I have known women who have found Jesus, but still thirst. They think they are thirsty for a man. That is not true. These are great women and they love Jesus, but there is a thirst for living water in every woman (and in every man) no matter what their age.

“Go, call your husband and come back,” We have some great husbands at Life Gate who work diligently at supplying living water for their wives. I am constantly telling people to look at this husband or look at that husband. I love for people to look at our Life Gate husbands.

Father’s Day Special: Learn to Call Your Husband

Now for the Father’s Day part.

A man cannot be a father until he is a LIVING WATER husband. We men need to provide living water for our wives and we need to provide living water for our children and grandchildren. We have all known males who provide poison for their families to drink. They are Jim Jones’ who ‘Kool-Aid’ their poison and kill the souls and the spirits of their own children and grandchildren.

Also, they abuse their families both mentally and physically. Furthermore, they curse, beat, and belittle the precious gifts that God has given them to train up and mold. Men train them all right. Men train them to mentally and physically abuse their own grandchildren because of the learned behavior their children learn from their dads. I have watched grandfathers cry because their grandchildren were being treated as the grandfather I talked with had treated his children. We sometimes train them to be alcoholics. Or, we sometimes train them to be angry men. Or, we sometimes train them to be prejudiced or live in financial bondage, or addictions. However, we must give them living water. If not, we will produce Samaritans – confused, mixed-up idol worshipers.

I couldn’t help but think about King David. David loved God but poisoned his children because they drank from David’s poison. David taught them learned behavior. For example, David had many wives and concubines, so David’s son Solomon had many wives and concubines. David took another man’s wife and murdered her husband, so David’s son Absalom murdered men and took the wives of David. David took what he wanted, so David’s son Amnon took what he wanted and raped his half-sister Tamar.

I don’t think we understand the principle of giving our children the poison of “learned behavior.”

1 Kings 14:22 And Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins which they had committed, above all that their fathers had done.

Nehemiah 9:2 And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.

They realized that they had learned their behavior from their fathers. They purposed to stop it by identifying it, confessing it, and repenting.

Abraham had a fault. He would put Sarah in jeopardy with Pharaohs and Kings. His son Isaac did the same thing to his wife Rebekah. Jacob was a deceiver and his sons became deceivers too. The Bible tells about their deceiving Jacob about Joseph. We have already talked about David. If we read through the books of Judges, 1 and 2 Kings, and 1 and 2 Chronicles, we will see again and again how the sins of the fathers went from generation to generation. Children drink the waters of learned behavior.

However, the opposite is just as true. For example, the father of Jesus was Joseph. He was the earthly father example that Father God selected for Jesus. We know that God selected Mary, but he also selected Joseph.

Father’s Day Special: Learn to Call Your Husband

Matthew 1:19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man…

Joseph was a very special man. He was a very spiritual man sensitive to spiritual things such as visitations from the Holy Spirit and angels. We easily see what an impact he had upon Jesus, but don’t stop there. Mary drank living water from Joseph and he was diligent to make certain that his family drank living water from him also.

Luke 2:41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

Luke 2:42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

JOSEPH WAS A CONSISTENT MAN and that is a key to being a father. Joseph and Mary had a large family. It was no small undertaking to load them all up and go to a feast, yet Joseph did it every year consistently. From what we are told about Mary and Joseph’s children, they all became godly people. Joseph brought living water to all his children. James and Jude became apostles of Christ and obviously, there was a very positive effect upon Jesus.

That is what God desires from fathers. We should leave a Christ in the earth that will go on after we are gone. Moreover, we should produce children whom others want to come and see. We continue to drink from Joseph’s life today.

Father’s Day Special: Learn to Call Your Husband

Strange things will always happen when a man does not bring living water into the home. The serpent will come as he did to Eve. Eve will be deceived. The garden will be lost. Cain will be birthed. Adam, the first husband, stood by and watched it all happen. Adam did not do well at bringing living water. We have learned our behavior from Adam.

Men, we must be spiritual leaders who are consistent and consistently provide living water. If so, the serpent’s poison will find no place.

The woman at the well had been spiritually deceived. Neither her fathers nor her men had given her living water. They had only given her the poison of deception and learned behavior.

John 4:20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”

The woman had learned behavior from her fathers – dad, granddad, relationships, and leaders – men. The Samaritans had been led into idolatry by their fathers centuries earlier and it had remained. So much of what is happening in lives and homes today is learned idolatry because of what the fathers worship on their mountains of idolatry. I mean our generational fathers, fathers in the Lord, city fathers, etc. Jesus told the woman that deception and idolatry could change right now.

Father’s Day Special: Learn to Call Your Husband

John 4:23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.

John 4:24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.”

I want to encourage all dads that the time HAS NOW COME for you to end whatever your fathers have taught you to worship. Worship is not only singing or raising our hands on Sunday morning. That’s not what Jesus was referencing. He wanted her to experience living water.

Husbands, your wives, your children, and your grandchildren watch you worship. Oh, they see what you do here at church on Sunday, but what do they see you do other times? What are they drinking from you concerning giving to the kingdom or ministering to people? What are they drinking from you when you become upset? Also, what are they drinking from you when it comes to reading the Word of God or having a consistent prayer life? Furthermore, what are they drinking from you concerning addictions and vices?

John 4:27-30

27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.

Father’s Day Special: Learn to Call Your Husband

At what do you marvel? Do we marvel as the disciples did at the ways of our society – Jesus talking to a lowly Samaritan? Has society affected us so badly that we are missing what is truly important? Or, have we received the living water and become a cistern – well – of living water? Which are we?

God forbid, but if your obituary were written tomorrow, how would it read?

Toward the end of the nineteenth century, Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel awoke one morning to read his own obituary in the local newspaper: “Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, who died yesterday, devised a way for more people to be killed in a war than ever before, and he died a very rich man.”

Actually, it was Alfred’s older brother who had died; a newspaper reporter had bungled the epitaph.

But the account had a profound effect on Nobel. He decided he wanted to be known for something other than developing the means to kill people efficiently and for amassing a fortune in the process. So he initiated the Nobel Prize, the award for scientists and writers who foster peace.

Nobel said, “Every man ought to have the chance to correct his epitaph in midstream and write a new one.”

Few things will change us as much as looking at our life as though it is finished.

Father’s Day Special: Learn to Call Your Husband

So sir, if your life was finished, what living water remains? [PA– USE] Will you leave a Mary, Jesus, James, Jude, etc? Will you leave a Christ in the earth? I believe you will. It’s not too late to change your epitaph if you need to. What has come from the fathers to you? Separate yourself, confess it to God, and ask him to help you repent. Bring your family living water and your wife and children and grandchildren will say, COME SEE A MAN…

I want to end this today by thanking you dads for being living water to your homes and to our church. Come and see men who live lives from which this region can drink.

How many are and want to continue being living water? Give the Lord a shout and a handclap!
