Scriptures: Sermon, Romans 8:28, Genesis 11:32, Genesis 12:1, Romans 8:28, Genesis 13:14-15, Romans 8:28

What was your worst day ever? What was your best day ever? Is there a link between the two? Now think for me. Did your worst day trigger something, shake something loose, and begin something eventually bringing your best day?

Romans 8:28 And we know that ALL THINGS work together for GOOD to them that LOVE GOD, to them who are the called according to HIS PURPOSE.

What this verse says is as we live our lives from day to day, God is going to take it upon himself to orchestrate our failures as well as successes to work for our good. The believer’s life will be good no matter what comes if he or she continues to love God and walk in his or her purpose. Is this incredible or what? What are some evidences you love God? Jesus said if you love me you will keep my commandments (Jn 14:15). You will be faithful to the things of God. You will pray/talk to God. Also, you will give as instructed by God to give. You will minister to people. His purpose would be in contrast to “your purpose.” Sometimes they are not the same.

Let’s be honest. How many of us have gone through something from Hades and you were in the middle of hell itself? At this moment in your life, some wonderful, well-meaning believer, came to you and said, “All things work together for good.” At this moment, it was not what you wanted to hear. YOU WERE NOT CONCERNED ABOUT HOW IT WOULD WORK OUT. You simply wanted to make it to tomorrow. Your thought was, “Give me something to help me now. In fact, if God really cared, I wouldn’t be going through this today.” How many have experienced something like this?

I have experienced it so much once I remember saying, “The next Christian who quotes Romans 8:28 to me, I will punch in the nose.” You can’t see this verse working at this moment when you are in Hades. It’s only in “RETROSPECT” we see how a bad day was really the beginning of one of our best days.

Worst Day Best Day

I was thinking about this. Abraham had a WORST DAY when his dad Terah died (Gen. 11:32).

However, a series of circumstances were set into motion bringing his BEST DAY, which was the birth of Isaac. Terah’s death shook Abraham. Have you ever lost a loved one or had a heartbreak shaking you to your foundation? Yet, if you look closely, you should be able to see how it began a process bringing about one of your best days.

Though the death of Terah shook Abraham to his foundation, it caused him to get out of Ur and on with God’s plan for his life.

Genesis 11:32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.

Genesis 12:1 Now the LORD HAD SAID unto Abram, GET THEE OUT of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee.

The Lord had said to Abram to move on, but because of Terah, he did not. Obviously, Abram loved his dad very much. Abram’s dad died. The next verse tells us IT WAS THEN Abram began walking in God’s plan for his life. He began LOVING GOD! Remember chapter divisions and verse numbering are man’s doing. The thought of Terah dying, i.e. Abraham’s WORST DAY, and Abraham’s moving on into God’s plan, i.e. Abraham’s BEST DAY, are connected. IF WE LOOK, MANY TIMES, WE WILL FIND IT TOOK A BAD DAY, A DAY OF SHAKING, TO CA– USE US TO REALLY MOVE INTO GOD’S PLAN FOR OUR LIVES – LOVING GOD.

Worst Day Best Day

It was this way for me. It was over thirty years ago. I was shook to the foundations of myself. It was a WORST DAY. This shaking began me on an incredible adventure searching for stability and truth. Six years later, I accepted Jesus as my Lord and savior. My WORST DAY caused this church to exist. I am now having my BEST DAYS. Let’s look at Romans 8:28 again.

Romans 8:28 And WE KNOW that ALL THINGS work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

All life’s THINGS will work together for our good. The requirements for this are (1) love God and (2) called according to his purpose. The Apostle Paul said this is something we should know. PEOPLE THAT LOVE GOD SHOULD KNOW THE WORST DAYS WILL BECOME THE BEST DAYS. Do you know this? You should be able to look at your history and see this is true. Let’s check it out. Do a little RETROSPECT for me.

I have talked to several people about this thought. Some immediately saw the link. I cannot find a Bible character who didn’t have a WORST DAY and this includes Jesus. My good news is their WORST DAY became their BEST DAY.

I sent the e-mail out Friday night about this lesson.

When I checked my e-mail Saturday morning, I found a response from Grace Murphy. I would like to read it to you, but first let me set the context. I was at a seminar in Chicago – Willow Creek. After a session, I checked my cell messages and there was a message from Grace Murphy. She was in panic mode. She was pregnant and the doctor gave her a very bad report. So, she went back a month later for an appointment. The doctor told her the child was tremendously deformed with all sorts of physical problems. They would take the child the next morning at 6 a.m. I called her back. We prayed. I told her it was going to be ok (Rom 8:28) and I would catch the first plane out and be there in the morning. Judy and I were at the hospital the next morning.

Here is her e-mail to me. “Worst day ever was Sept. 20th 2000 – worst doctor’s appointment of my life! One month later, Oct. 20, I had Alex and everything they told me that would kill him was proven wrong in a matter of hours. There was a lot of spiritual growth that happened in such a VERY short time and -today- I don’t believe I would trade that month of misery for how much more mature my relationship with him is today. I’m much more secure in some ways, much less secure in others, but ever since then, I ALWAYS know (that no matter what IT is) it will always be ok. Love you hope you’re having fun and relaxing – tell everyone hello – Grace” Alex was born very healthy. God made Grace’s WORST DAY one of her BEST DAYS.

Worst Day Best Day

Let’s look at another Bible character who had a WORST DAY.

Joseph’s brothers threw Joseph into a pit. This was a WORST DAY and got worse. His brothers sold him to some Ishmaelites (distant relatives) who took Joseph to Egypt and sold him again. As you know, it was a WORST DAY beginning a series of circumstances bringing about Joseph’s BEST DAY. God made Joseph a ruler over Egypt. Have you ever experienced a falling out with family or friends? Maybe they wrote you off. If you continued loving God and doing his purpose, God made it all work for your good.

Another wonderful thing I see about this truth is we are not limited to one WORST DAY turned into one BEST DAY. God will do it repeatedly. God takes responsibility. Abraham had many WORST DAYS. Joseph had many WORST DAYS. As we look, we see every WORST DAY Abraham experienced brought about a BEST DAY. Every WORST DAY Joseph experienced brought about a BEST DAY. Every WORST DAY I have ever had always brought about a BEST DAY.

Let’s look again at Abraham.

WORST DAY of severe famine sent Abraham to Egypt, but he came out of Egypt, one BEST DAY, an extremely rich man. Have you ever had one of those famine experiences? I have watched many people go through famine days. The famine devoured those who stopped loving God and walking in his purpose. However, those who continued loving God and walking in his purpose came out wealthier than ever. I am thinking of a couple of individuals in our congregation who actually lost their jobs. It’s a WORST DAY, but do you know what happened? It turned into their BEST DAY. God blessed them more than ever. They continued to love God and be faithful to his purpose.

The year was 1996. I felt like I was in Egypt. There was a famine in the land of Life Gate. We had gone through a very bad time. It was one of my WORST DAYS. We owed on our building. We had to make the payroll and we would soon be out of money. The Lord spoke to my wife Judy and we watched God move. We experienced one of our BEST DAYS. We came out of the famine, paid off the building, carpeted the entire floor of the building, and paved the parking lot. I am trying to tell you this works every time.

Worst Day Best Day

Let’s again look at Joseph.

Joseph had a bad day when Mrs. Potiphar said, “Lie with me,” but he would not. She told her husband Joseph made advances to her and Potiphar put Joseph in prison. It was a WORST DAY, but God took the WORST DAY and worked together a series of circumstances to bring Joseph his BEST DAY.

Have you ever had something like this happen? Someone told an absolute lie causing you a prison experience. This was a WORST DAY, but if you continued loving God and doing his purpose, it became a BEST DAY. I KNOW it did. My “prison” experience worked this way. What some meant to harm me, God meant for my good.

Again, looking at Abraham. Abraham had a WORST DAY of strife and separation with his nephew Lot. God made a BEST DAY out of it. Do you remember the story?

Genesis 13:14-15 And the LORD said unto Abram, AFTER THAT LOT WAS SEPARATED from him, Lift up NOW thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, TO THEE WILL I GIVE IT, AND TO THY SEED FOR EVER.

Notice the direct connection of WORST/BEST. Because Abraham kept loving God and walking in God’s purpose, God worked his WORST DAY situation of strife into a BEST DAY for Abraham.

We could go on and on. There was the WORST DAY Abraham had with Ishmael and the BEST DAY of Isaac. There was the WORST DAY when God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac and the BEST DAY when God provided a ram instead, and there may be a day God tells you to sacrifice the most precious thing in your life. If you will, God will turn it into your BEST DAY.

Worst Day Best Day

Every WORST DAY with any Bible character was only the sign of a BEST DAY coming. It was a WORST DAY when David’s brothers put David down and called him a naughty little boy, but the same day was a BEST DAY as he took Goliath’s head off. It was a WORST DAY when Saul threw a spear at David. Also, it was a BEST DAY when David was crowned king of Israel. It was a WORST DAY when the son of David and Bathsheba died. David kept loving God and walking in God’s purpose. It was a BEST DAY when David and Bathsheba’s son Solomon became David’s heir to the throne. GOD TAKES RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD IF WE KEEP LOVING HIM AND DOING HIS PURPOSE.

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

My worst days brought me to my best days. It’s never failed. God has always worked it for good. I know all things work together for good. If you love God and if you do his purpose for your life, then I can stand before you during your WORST DAY and boldly tell you, “EVERYTHING WILL BE ALL RIGHT.”

Let’s think about Jesus a minute. What would have been his WORST DAY? Do you think the cross? This was a bad Friday. Yet, we call it good Friday. Why is this? It’s because his WORST DAY was his BEST DAY. God works all things together for good. Christ’s WORST DAY took place so he could have his BEST DAY. He ascended to the right hand of the Father. He is now exalted to the highest position in the universe. His name is above all names. His WORST DAY brought forth his BEST DAY.

I want to close by asking how you respond when you go through WORST DAYS? Do you blame God or continue loving God? Do you keep doing what you are called to do, or do you become angry with God? Also, do you throw in the towel with church and your purpose? I hope you have seen the correct way to handle your WORST DAYS. Keep loving God and keep doing your God given purpose. If you will, God will take responsibility and make your WORST DAY YOUR BEST DAY.

To those who have never received Jesus or slipped away from him, I trust you see your need to come home to Father God.

Your life is a mess. WORST DAYS get worse without loving God and doing his purpose. However, if you will love God and do what he has called you to do, GOD WILL TAKE YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE AND MAKE IT YOUR DREAM COME TRUE. I want to tell everyone no matter what you are going through today, God loves you. Though he WILL NOT stop all the hurt of the situation, he WILL take responsibility and make it all work for your good.
