I Have Low Self Worth 2

Scripture: Philippians 4:13, Exodus 2:22, Exodus 3:11, Exodus 3:11, Exodus 3:13, Exodus 4:1, Exodus 4:10, Exodus 4:13, Exodus 6:28-7:1, Revelation 5:9-10, Romans 8:30-31

Last time we began talking about Smile Staying Positive When… I Have Low Self-Worth. I want to continue looking at this today. People go through life feeling disqualified. They had a bad family life, abused somehow. People have treated them badly. They’ve made mistakes. Maybe they have a physical difficulty they feel disqualifies them. These things can attack our self-worth and possibly stop us from rising higher and living the life God has for us.

We saw God has already deposited greatness inside every child of God. Gideon struggled with self-worth (Jdg 6:16) though greatness and valor – value, resources, overcomer, wealth, strength, force, and virtue (Jud 6:12) was already in him.

I don’t like to recap, but we learned some principles about low self-worth I need to mention. Then we can build from there. We saw:

1) People who struggle with low self-worth feel abandoned by God and people (Jdg 613).

God has blessed others with gifts, talents, and abilities but skipped over them when passing his blessings out. They feel God must love others more. No. It’s not an issue of love. God loves you as much as anyone else. The problem is you have not accessed the treasure of gifts and talents in your valor. Once Gideon stepped out his greatness came out. It’s this way with anyone.

2) Often people with serious self-worth frequently come from a dysfunctional home as did Gideon (Jdg 6:15).

One or both parents abandoned them. They likely were abused physically, sexually, mentally, or emotionally. They feel if they were no worth to their parents then they have no worth.

3) Often people with serious self-worth issues allow their dysfunctional home life to become an excuse for not utilizing their greatness inside.

The excuse will rob them of the great life they could have.

4) The Lord told Gideon, “Go in the strength you have” (Jdg 6:14) and then he said, “I will be with you” (Jdg 6:16).

The Lord didn’t say “I am with you.” It’s “Go and I will be with you.” Again, we’ve got to step out and try. Then the Lord will show up and show out. The “going part” is major in overcoming low self-worth.

5) True strength doesn’t come from physical power.

Philippians 4:13 I CAN DO EVERYTHING through him WHO GIVES ME STRENGTH.

What do you want to do? You already have the strength to do it. The strength to have a successful life comes from the Lord through your valor. To be great and do something great comes from within, not from your muscle mass. God has already given you more than enough strength to do everything you want to do.

6) God will not give you the opportunity to go higher in life if he had not already given you the ability.

You already possess the ability to do anything and everything you want.

We see this in Moses. You likely know his story. Moses was born in Egypt during a time of oppression and slavery. Male babies lives were aborted by throwing them into the Nile River (Exo 1:22). After birth, Moses’ mother hid him three months (Exo 2:2). Then she put the baby in the Nile River in a basket. Pharaoh’s daughter found him, allowed a Hebrew woman to nurse him who was his mother, and then his mother gave the baby back to Pharaoh’s daughter who named him Moses (Exo 2:6-10). How would this work on your self-worth? You’d have to ask, “Does anyone want me?”

When Moses had grown older, he saw an Egyptian beating an Israelite. Moses looked both ways and in anger Moses killed the Egyptian and buried him in the sand (Exo 2:12). Pharaoh learned of it and tried to kill Moses, but Moses escaped to the desert where he lived about forty years keeping sheep. He married and had a son. We see Moses has a self-worth issue as he named his son.

Exodus 2:22 Zipporah gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom, saying, “I have become an alien in a foreign land.”

Moses felt abandoned. “I’m an alien. I don’t fit anywhere. No one wants me.” Moses’ name meant “drawing out of water” (Exo 2:10). Every time someone spoke to Moses they said, “Hello you who was drawn out of the water.” “Your mother put you in the river in a basket and someone had to draw you out.” Now every time someone spoke to Moses’ son they said, “Hello alien in a foreign land.” A parent often transfers their low self-worth to their children.

Once Moses saw a bush burning but the fire did not consume the bush. He went to investigate and there had his encounter with God as the angel of the Lord (Christophany) spoke to Moses from the burning bush. The Lord gave Moses the opportunity to go to Pharaoh and bring his people out of Egypt. Here is Moses’ reply.

Exodus 3:11 But Moses said to God, “WHO AM I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”

It’s how every person who struggles with self-worth feels. “Who am I?” However, God does not give the opportunity to go higher in life if he hasn’t already given the ability to accomplish it. Inside of Moses, as with Gideon and you, was valor – value, resources, an overcomer, wealth, strength, force, and virtue.

It’s difficult to see in some, but everyone struggles with self-worth and self-confidence at some level. We all fear failure and rejection. However, facing failure and rejection must happen if we’re ever going to go higher in life and have any degree of success. Remember, God does not give us the opportunity unless he’s already given us the ability.

Moses, as did Gideon, began his long list of excuses why he couldn’t take the opportunity and do what the Lord already gave him the ability to do. His excuses attacked his self-worth and could have robbed Moses of his greatness and success. Moses was a genius. As Pharaoh’s daughter’s child, Moses was highly educated in Egypt. God had already placed inside Moses the ability before he ever gave Moses the opportunity. Greatness was already inside Moses. It’s in you also. Moses could lead God’s people better than anyone. There is something you can do greater and better than anyone you know.

Moses strung off his excuses:

Exodus 3:11 “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”

Exodus 3:13 “Suppose I go …and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”

Exodus 4:1 “What if they do not believe me or listen to me…

Exodus 4:10 “O Lord, I have never been eloquent …I am slow of speech and tongue.”

Exodus 4:13 “O Lord, please send someone else to do it.”

As with Gideon, the Lord does not accept our excuses.

The Lord told Moses to go. His brother Aaron would meet him (why wasn’t Aaron thrown in the river?). The Lord would teach them both what to say and do as they went along (Exo 4:15). What was the Lord saying? I think he was saying “Fake it until you make it.” You may not feel confident, but if you act confident the feeling will come and the Lord will be with you.

When I began to speak and minister, I felt intimidated. Sometimes I still do with big crowds or when I speak other places, but I try not to show it. When it’s my time, I walk to the podium, stand tall, lift my head, take a deep breath, lift my voice, and present myself as if I know what I’m doing. I learned sometimes you got to fake it until you make it. A better way to say it is I’ve learned to “faith it until I make it.” I’ve learned everyone successful does this. Here’s the bottom line. God would not have given you the opportunity had he not already equipped you to do it. If you simply go, the Lord will help you along the way. If you will “faith it until you make it,” he will teach you along the way.

God will be with you by his Spirit, favor, and valor (anointing). But he will also be with you through people who love you. He will send you your Aaron(s). I’ve learned God will always place people in your life to encourage and help you face your Pharaoh.

Exodus 6:28-7:1 Now when the LORD spoke to Moses in Egypt, he said to him, “I am the LORD. Tell Pharaoh king of Egypt everything I tell you.” But Moses said to the LORD, “Since I SPEAK WITH FALTERING LIPS, WHY WOULD PHARAOH LISTEN TO ME?” Then the LORD said to Moses, “See, I HAVE MADE YOU LIKE GOD TO PHARAOH, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.

It’s the second time Moses has said something about his ability to speak (Exo 4:10). Some people say Moses stuttered, but most translations say it means he knew he was not a great communicator or a great orator. Whatever it was, it caused Moses serious self-worth issues and to feel disqualified to do the opportunity God gave him. No! Notice what the Lord said. “Moses, how you talk doesn’t matter. Who I have made you is what matters!” To what has he made you? You are a child of God. You are in the kingdom of God.

(KJV) Revelation 5:9-10 …and HAST REDEEMED US TO GOD by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast MADE US UNTO OUR GOD KINGS AND PRIESTS: and WE SHALL REIGN ON THE EARTH.

Jesus died shedding his blood redeeming you and making you a king or a queen. Jesus died to give you worth. God expects us to act like who we are. Men, you are a king. Women you are a queen. You are royalty. You are born of God, and you are special. We don’t act with arrogance, but we are expected to act with confidence. It’s not you feel you are better than anyone else. But you definitely are not less than anyone else. Present yourself as a king or a queen.

I Have Low Self Worth 2

You’ve got to be confident. Hold your head up high. Have energy. Walk with confidence. Speak with confidence. Live with confidence. Here is why. People will treat you the way you treat yourself. If you project an “I’m inferior to you,” then people will treat you as inferior. If you go around with your head down not looking people in their eyes when you speak projecting inferiority, this is how they will treat you. Also if you won’t speak up speaking with confidence, what you are saying subconsciously to them is I’m not important. Don’t waste your time and breathe on me. I don’t deserve your attention.

Realize the way you carry yourself sends out subconscious subliminal messages. You can be a very talented intelligent person, but if you’re not confident in who you are and who God made you, you send out a message saying, “You don’t need to notice me. I’m unimportant.”

“Professor Mehrabian combined the statistical results of the two studies and came up with the now famous rule that communication is only 7 percent verbal and 93 percent non-verbal. The non-verbal component was made up of body language (55 percent) and tone of voice (38 percent).”

Voice tones, body language, facial expression, posture, how you dress, etc. comprise 93% of your communication.

What you say verbally is only 7% of what people “hear” when you speak to them. “Moses, what you say isn’t nearly as important as how you say it.” Present yourself as the king you are. Present yourself as the queen you are. Jesus died to give you worth. You are precious to him.

I Have Low Self Worth 2

Moses did go to Pharaoh. If we didn’t know he struggled with self-worth, we would not know it by his actions. He was bold. He said and did exactly what the Lord told him to do, and he was confident and do you know what? We never hear him talk about his ability to communicate or his self-worth again. Moses became extremely confident. So much so he’d even argue with God and win the argument (Exo 33:12-18). Moses never gave excuses again. He led the people out and became the great leader Moses, not drawn out of the water Moses. He tapped into his valor and became great.

The Queen of England is not the most beautiful person in England. She’s not the physically strongest. She’s not the most intelligent person in England. She doesn’t appear to be the most pleasant and fun person in England, but she’s not intimidated by those who are. Why? She knows who she is. She would say, “I’m not the most beautiful, most intelligent, most personable, but I am the queen.” When you understand this, it changes everything.

Romans 8:30-31 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, HE ALSO GLORIFIED. What, then, shall we say in response to this? IF GOD IS FOR US, WHO CAN BE AGAINST US?

You are glorious! God is for you. Nothing can stand against you. God did not abandon you. No matter your family situation – abandoned or abused – God will use it like he did with Moses to prepare you for your greatness. Don’t allow excuses to rob you of your potential. If you go in the strength you have, God will be with you. Faith it until you make it. Be confident. Hold your head up. Look people in their eyes. Walk and speak with confidence. Live with confidence. Strength to change your life comes from within (Phi 4:13). Remind yourself God would not give you the opportunity to go higher if he had not already given you the ability to go higher.
