This Passover Luke 22:14-20

This Passover Luke 22:14-20 audio video notes. The Jewish people had celebrated around 1,500 years of Passovers sacrificing millions/billions of lambs while awaiting the one true Lamb of God. Jesus had the Passover meal every year of his life, but this Passover was with a double desire. Twice Jesus used the word desire – craving, longing, to lust after. Jesus deeply wanted and anticipated this Passover. Why? This Passover would be the last official Passover. This Passover would fulfill Passover.

Scriptures: Genesis 1:5, Leviticus 23:32, Luke 22:7, Luke 22:14, Luke 22:15, Luke 22:15-18, Luke 22:19-20, 1 Corinthians 5:7, Luke 21:20, Luke 21:31-33, Matthew 5:21-22, 27-28, 31-34, 38-39, 43-44, John 13:34-35, 1 Corinthians 11:23-25, 1 Corinthians 11:26

As I approach this Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday I’m wondering how many more of these I’ll have the honor of preaching. I thought about how Jesus must have approached this time in his life as he approached the most special moment of his life to this point – his death. What happened between this point and then – less than twenty-four hours – was monumental. Jesus knew it. He had one shot! He wouldn’t get to do this again. What monumental event will you never get to do again? How did you do? What did you do with it?

This day we study in the life of Christ would be after sundown on Thursday evening of Passion Week. On their calendar, it was already Friday. Our day begins at 12 am. Their day began at sundown.

(KJV) Genesis 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. AND THE EVENING AND THE MORNING WERE THE FIRST DAY.

(also Gen 1:8, 13, 19, 23, 31) Concerning the Day of Atonement Sabbath fast,

Leviticus 23:32 It is a sabbath of rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. From THE EVENING OF the ninth day of the month UNTIL THE FOLLOWING EVENING you are to observe your sabbath.”

One day ended and the next began at sundown.

We read this verse last time, but we need to read it again.

Luke 22:7 Then came THE DAY of Unleavened Bread on which THE PASSOVER LAMB HAD TO BE SACRIFICED.

To Jesus it was the day the Passover lamb HAD TO BE SACRIFICED. Jesus had to die today, but not until he terminated the Old Covenant, instituted the New Covenant, displayed true servanthood, told Peter Satan asked to sift him and would, explained to his disciples his leaving, explained the coming of the Comforter (Holy Spirit), explained to his disciples it was good he was leaving as they would do greater things than he, and told Judas he could go and be quick about it. He would then be arrested, stand before Jewish leaders in three fake trials, taken to Pilate, taken to Herod, taken back to Pilate, though proclaimed innocent three times, scourged, taken to the hill of the skull, executed, and buried. All this must happen before the next sundown. This was his plan. It was monumental. He did it and changed the world.

It was a monumental moment in history set up by Jesus with extreme secrecy. Satan, Judas, and the Jews would not be allowed to interrupt.

Luke 22:14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table.

All four gospels tell of this event showing its extreme importance. Jesus brought the ten apostles to the secret room where Peter and John had prepared and waited.

We’ve talked about how they reclined to eat. It was not the long table where they all sat on one side posing for a photo as da Vinci’s Last Supper painting projects. It was a low table surrounded by pillows. They lay with their nasty feet away from the table for hours experiencing and enjoying a long meal consisting of roasted lamb, unleavened bread, bitter herbs, a sopping paste, and four glasses of wine. The feast changed from its original setting when done with haste in the exit from Egypt (Exo 12:11). It became a slow celebratory memorial for friends and family to be together.

Perhaps we can relate it to a Thanksgiving feast. John, in his gospel, doesn’t say much about the meal. He concentrates on the conversation and long discussions using chapters 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 – five chapters, or 25% of his book. Imagine if we took 25% of our time to listen, question, and learn from Jesus. Seven times in this section, Luke 22:14-39, we find “he said,” “Jesus said…,” “saying,” etc. It was a tremendous time of conversation and instruction. They reclined, relaxed, and enjoyed the presence of Jesus who began by saying.

Luke 22:15 And HE SAID to them, “I HAVE EAGERLY DESIRED to eat THIS PASSOVER with you before I suffer.

(KJV) Luke 22:15 And HE SAID unto them, WITH DESIRE I HAVE DESIRED to eat THIS PASSOVER with you before I suffer

The Jewish people celebrated around 1,500 years of Passovers sacrificing millions/billions of lambs while awaiting the one true Lamb of God. Jesus had the Passover meal every year of his life, but this Passover was with a double desire. Twice Jesus used the word epithumia {ep-ee-thoo-mee’-ah} – desire, craving, longing, to lust after. Jesus deeply wanted and anticipated this Passover. Why? This Passover would be the last official Passover. Passover would be fulfilled today. From the foundation, Jesus had waited for this Passover.

Luke 22:15-18 And HE SAID to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat THIS PASSOVER with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I WILL NOT EAT IT AGAIN UNTIL IT FINDS FULFILLMENT IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD.” After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I WILL NOT DRINK AGAIN of the fruit of the vine UNTIL THE KINGDOM OF GOD COMES.”

Luke 22:19-20 And he took BREAD, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “THIS IS MY BODY given for you, DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.” In the same way, after the supper he took THE CUP, saying, “THIS CUP IS THE NEW COVENANT IN MY BLOOD, which is POURED OUT FOR YOU.

I read those two sections together to point out Jesus terminated the Old Covenant which was instituted and renewed with Passover and replaced the Old Covenant with the New Covenant which was instituted and renewed with Communion. The Passover was replaced by Communion. The Old Covenant in the blood of animals was replaced with the New Covenant in his blood. Communion is the fulfillment of Passover. The New Covenant is the fulfillment of the Old. This is why he said, “With desire I have desired to eat THIS PASSOVER with you before I suffer.”

Let’s make certain we read this correctly. Jesus will not eat the “Passover” again. He will eat the Passover’s fulfillment in the kingdom of God. It would be fulfilled. What was the fulfillment of Passover?

1 Corinthians 5:7 …For Christ, OUR Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

When Jesus died on the cross he fulfilled the Passover as the Lamb of God.

Not eat it again is ouketi {ook-et’-ee} – no longer, no more, no further. The Passover goes no further. Jesus said, “I will never ever, ever, never eat it again…” We call this “The Last Supper.” This was a part of his last meal before he suffered, but this was the last Passover and the first Communion.

“Delbert, I thought you said the kingdom of God has come?” I did. It has. “Then what did Jesus mean when he said, ‘I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes'”? Remember when we studied the apostles asking Jesus when the destruction of the temple would happen in chapter 21?

Luke 21:20 “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near.

We talked about how the Roman armies did this, two thousand years ago in AD 70 destroying both Jerusalem and the temple. Jerusalem was rebuilt. The temple was not. Jesus said it would all happen before their generation ended. Then Jesus said,

Luke 21:31-33 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS NEAR. “I tell you the truth, THIS GENERATION will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

The destruction of the temple and the end of their generation were symbolic and synoptic with the coming of the kingdom of God.

Jesus said it would all happen before their generation passed. The Passover, though installed in Egypt, was not consummated until that generation perished in the wilderness and Canaan was entered. The New Covenant was installed this night, but not consummated until the destruction of the temple and their wicked generation perished.

The termination of the temple, sacrificial system, temple worship, feasts – Passover, Unleavened Bread, Pentecost, Tabernacles, High Priest, Chief Priests, Temple Priests, Pharisees, Sadducees, the Law of Moses, and everything associated with the Old Covenant was the fulfillment of all the Passover began and is emblematic of. The temple still stood when Jesus said, “I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.” Its coming down was the obvious termination of the Old Covenant and the coming of the kingdom of God with Christ as king.

Jesus said, “This cup is the New Covenant in my blood.” This was the monumental transition from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant, but what does this mean? We understand the end of temple worship, priesthood, and animal sacrifice. We get it was the end of the dietary laws of clean and unclean, Sabbath, etc but there is more we need to understand. The best way I can explain it is to give you a “What!” moment. In the Law of Moses, the Old Covenant, are all the commandments including the 10 Commandments. We handle most of it, but we sort of buck when it comes to the 10 Commandments. Here’s what Jesus said.

“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not murder… BUT I TELL YOU that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Matthew 5:21-22

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ BUT I TELL YOU that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Matthew 5:27-28

“It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’ BUT I TELL YOU that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery. Matthew 5:31-32

Matthew 5:33-34 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.’ BUT I TELL YOU, Do not swear at all…

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ BUT I TELL YOU, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. Matthew 5:38-39

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ BUT I TELL YOU: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you Matthew 5:43-44

Jesus didn’t lower the bar by overwriting the Ten Commandments. Jesus raised the bar to the Kingdom of God level. Actually, Jesus gave us a new commandment, just one. Do this one and you won’t need to worry about the Ten.

John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

The Old was replaced with the New. The Law was replaced with Love, Grace, and Mercy. Jesus did more than terminate the Old Covenant. He raised life. He changed the world. Also, he brought the potential to have an abundant life (Joh 10:10).

He said, “Do THIS in REMEMBRANCE of me,” DO THIS! Don’t eat a sacrificed roasted lamb. Do THIS! Eat the bread which is his body. What the Passover Lamb was to Israel and the Old Covenant, Jesus Christ is to us (1Co 5:7) and the New Covenant. A primary purpose of Communion is to remember – remembrance. We remind ourselves how much God loves us. The Lord gave his body for us. We allow the bread to remind us of his sacrificed body. It’s not “transubstantiation” – the belief the bread becomes the actual body of Christ (Catholic doctrine). No. The bread is a reminder of what his body went through for you. The drink reminds us of our covenant in his blood.

Apostle Paul instructed the church at Corinth about Communion.

1 Corinthians 11:23-25 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you, do this in REMEMBRANCE OF ME.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, do this, WHENEVER YOU DRINK IT, in REMEMBRANCE of me.”

Then Paul noted something.

1 Corinthians 11:26 FOR WHENEVER YOU EAT THIS BREAD AND DRINK THIS CUP, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 11:26 For AS OFTEN AS YE EAT THIS BREAD, AND DRINK THIS CUP, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.

We don’t have a Passover forcing us to kill a lamb at a specific time on a specific day. When you have Communion it’s up to you. It’s not up to me as pastor to make you. We will have corporate Communion from time to time, but it’s whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup. It’s as often as you will.

The desire with desire the Lord Jesus had at THIS PASSOVER was to end the Old Covenant by instituting the New Covenant so he could do this with you. Jesus desires with desire to experience covenant with you. He will never make you. It’s whenever you will. He wants to love you and you love him and you love people as he loves you. How are we doing? How are you doing?
