Unlearning Limiting Beliefs sermon

Unlearning Limiting Beliefs sermon video audio notes. Self-limiting beliefs hold us back for a lifetime even if based on a casual remark or even a joke. The good news is beliefs were learned so they can be unlearned. There’s some area in your life where someone said or thought you were inferior, but you determined inwardly, you ‘made up your mind,’ if for no other reason than to prove them wrong, and you showed them.

Scriptures: Matthew 9:27-29, Mark 9:22-23, Psalm 139:13-14, Mark 11:23-24

I want to talk today about how our beliefs, our attitudes, and our prejudices – self-concepts – dictate who we are, what happens to us in life, and control the SETTING and achieving of our LIFE’S GOALS.

Matthew 9:27-29 When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “DO YOU BELIEVE that I am able to do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they replied. Then he touched their eyes and said, “ACCORDING TO YOUR FAITH WILL IT BE DONE TO YOU“; and their sight was restored…

(The Message Bible) Matthew 9:28-29 Jesus said to them, “DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE I can do this?” They said, “Why, yes, Master!” He touched their eyes and said, “BECOME WHAT YOU BELIEVE.”

We literally become in life what we believe. The outer aspects of the blind men’s lives changed according to their inward beliefs. Nothing has the power to open our eyes to our potential and get us to our goals as does Unlearning Limiting Beliefs. Conversely, the opposite is true.

Jesus said “according to your faith will it be done TO YOU,” not for you. Your inward beliefs and faith (confidence in your beliefs) cause life to be done to you good or bad. Correct inward beliefs dictate our lives positively giving us an abundant life. Erroneous inward beliefs dictate our lives negatively limiting life. Jesus consistently talked about how it’s what comes from the inside out that can defile us and mess life up (Mat 15:18). Many of the bad things that happen to us are a result of our wrong inward beliefs just as many of the good things that happen to us are a result of correct inward beliefs. Inward beliefs and the confidence you put in those beliefs, your faith, will cause life to be done to you like it or not.

We all have inward beliefs about ourselves positive and negative. We all have personal attitudes about ourselves, and we all have prejudices about ourselves. These produce how I really believe about myself or my faith in myself. Negative beliefs about me will limit and stop me from achieving my goals and fulfilling my potential.

To correct this, we must first learn how limiting beliefs about ourselves are subjective, meaning not based on fact at all.

All beliefs are learned. When we came into this world, we had no beliefs at all. We had no religious beliefs, no political party beliefs, no beliefs about people, no prejudiced beliefs, and no beliefs at all. My limiting beliefs are the results of information I’ve taken in about myself throughout my life. This information was initially formed in my early childhood starting with my parents, my friends, my instructors, my education, my life experiences, and a thousand other things. If I believe myself to be limited in some way, it becomes true for me and dictates how life will be done to me. When I believe it, I act in a deficient way when it comes to that skill.

Did you know Albert Einstein clashed with his teachers and was sent home from school saying he had a learning disability? His parents were told he was incapable of being educated. Instead of believing what others said, they arranged for him to receive an excellent education.  As you know, Einstein is synonymous with genius. Many CEOs of Fortune Five Hundred companies were told they were not particularly bright in school and incapable of doing much in life. Instead, they unlearned limiting beliefs going on to great success discovering their genius. Thomas Edison, inventor of the phonograph, movie camera, electric light bulb, electricity distribution, and possessing 1,093 US patents for his inventions was expelled from school.

Teachers said it was a waste of money to educate him. Edison became the greatest inventor of our modern age. He unlearned negative beliefs finding his genius.

Self-limiting beliefs hold us back for a lifetime even if based on a casual remark or even a joke. The good news is they were learned so they can be unlearned.

There’s some area in your life where someone said or thought you were inferior, but you determined inwardly, you “made up your mind,” if for no other reason than to prove them wrong, and you showed them.

From that we learn self-limiting beliefs about ourselves are not based on fact at all even if the limiting beliefs are our own. We falsely surmise we are not good enough when, in fact, we can do anything we believe we can do.

Mark 9:22-23 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But IF YOU CAN DO ANYTHING, take pity on us and help us.” “‘IF YOU CAN’?” said Jesus. “EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE FOR HIM WHO BELIEVES.”

How much is possible if we believe correctly? I want to make certain we note Jesus didn’t say, “Everything is possible for him who believes in God.” Of course, we are to believe in God. That father believed in God, but God created us to believe in ourselves also. God placed more potential in you than you can possibly ever use in your entire lifetime.

Psalm 139:13-14 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I AM FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE; YOUR WORKS ARE WONDERFUL, I KNOW THAT FULL WELL.

God created each of us with wonderful works of genius inside. David knew he was a genius because God made him wonderful. You have within yourself right now the ability to accomplish any goal if you are willing to work long enough and hard enough to achieve it. No one is better than you and no one is smarter than you. People are simply smarter or better in different areas at different times. They, or you, learned something they, or you, haven’t learned yet.

According to a study done by Howard Garner, we all have “multiple intelligences.”  Your intelligences (plural) are at least seven and inside any one of you could be genius, or at least exceptional. Sadly, only two intelligences are usually measured in school – verbal, and mathematical. So, if you are not good verbally or mathematically, you must not be intelligent. No! You may be a genius in Linguistics – words/language – writer, journalist, TV/radio presenter, etc. You may be a genius in Logical/Mathematical intelligence – engineer, accountant. But, maybe you’re a Musical genius – tuned to sound Beethoven, and Bach. You could be a Kinesthetic genius – body movement, therapist, control/coordination such as sports, or trainer.

Perhaps you could be a Visual and Artistic genius – arts and images – Da Vinci, Michelangelo, designer, photography.

You could be a genius in Entrepreneurial – begin successful businesses. Or, you could be an Intuitive genius – amazingly creative ideas, a visionary, and an inventor. You could be an Interpersonal or Intrapersonal genius – therapist, psychologist, preacher/minister, etc.

Every person is capable of achieving excellence in some area. Within you right now is the ability to function at genius, or at least exceptional levels, in at least one intelligence area. Discovering your genius or near genius will immediately begin casting off self-limiting beliefs about yourself and propel you toward success.

Once on the site, select an evaluation. The first one figures the result automatically. There is one for young people and a link below, “Fantasticat” to take you to a page for children. If you click the first link for the evaluation/test, it will open up. It’s self-explanatory using 1, 2, 3, 4 according to your intelligence preference. The first time I did it, I was too level. I waited a few days and did it again with much better results. After completing, you will see the results and a graph. It likely won’t make much sense. Note your scores, go back to the first page and scroll up. There each intelligence is explained and a list of areas where that specific intelligence excels.

Mine is Intrapersonal/Interpersonal and is exactly where I excel and from time to time even genius.

What is yours? What if you are near genius in an area where you feel inadequate? This is a tremendous tool to help your children or receive some direction for your personal life.

A goal in every life must be unlearning limiting beliefs. What if you possessed extraordinary ability, perhaps genius, to be an entrepreneur, but believed yourself incapable of beginning a business? Also, what if your success is just beyond your self-limiting beliefs? For example, what if you refused to believe you were limited in any way? How will it be done to you? Your income could double or triple. Your life would change. You would create a new reality for yourself.

Imagine a “Belief” store like a computer, or cell phone, or iPad software store, etc. If you could choose any belief you wanted, what belief would you choose? What if all you need to do is reprogram your beliefs? How do we do that?

There is a principle called the “Law of Reversibility.” Reversing self-limiting beliefs requires more than saying, “I’m not going to believe this anymore.” When we begin attempting to reverse our beliefs, thinking or saying it likely won’t cause us to feel it’s true. We will feel foolish. We lack faith in ourselves, and we fear failure and doubt ourselves. To battle and “reverse” this, act as if you are the person you desire to be with the qualities and talents necessary to be that person. This action generates the feelings that accompany the actions. We must get it into our senses/soul (last lesson).  How?

For example, if you want to be a leader in your company then dress like the leaders in your company.

Years ago, I was employed at Dundee Mills. Judy and I were recently married and I was a lab technician not making much money at all. I wanted to be in supervision (working with people where now I know my “genius” resides – interpersonal/intrapersonal). The plant Superintendent wore a tie and a white shirt to work every day, so I began wearing a tie and white shirt to work. I was asked why and I simply said, “I wanted to dress “UP.” Also, I formed my work habits like he did. I arrived early as he did, and I stayed current on the issues he was most interested in concerning the plant and I focused on them.

If his focus changed, I changed. The Superintendent noticed and only a few months afterwards, he asked me if I would be interested in supervision. I became the youngest supervisor in the organization and one of the most productive. But our life changed. My salary more than tripled overnight. We built a new home and everything changed. I’ve continued doing this. Today, I’ll observe preachers. If I like how they present themselves, preach, and teach, I’ll model them. I do this fishing, and I do it in everything. I love to learn and change and I’ve learned if I want to do it or be like it badly enough, I can.

Pick the people in the role you want to live and model them.

Listen to and act on their advice immediately. Allow them to see you doing what they instructed you. You will immediately begin to feel better about yourself and more connected with where you desire to go. Where you are will begin to release you. You will note your feelings and beliefs about yourself reverse. That’s the Law of Reversibility. “Fake it until you make it.” It works.

As we’ve talked about, your goal is to create the belief deep within yourself – soul/subconscious mind – of what you want in your outer world, your soul, the gatekeeper to your heart, will open your heart and your heart will make it reality. Delbert, do you have a verse for that? Certainly, I do. We’ve read it in every lesson.

Mark 11:23-24 “I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and DOES NOT DOUBT IN HIS HEART BUT BELIEVES THAT WHAT HE SAYS WILL HAPPEN, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, BELIEVE THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED IT, and IT WILL BE YOURS.

We must reprogram our beliefs. The way to do this is by believing you have received it. You haven’t received it yet, but you believe and act as if you have. Then, Jesus said it will be yours. Act as if God has given you a secret guarantee and only you know about it.
