Overcoming Negative Words – How to do it

Overcoming Negative Words audio video notes. What about negative words spoken to us? Do the negative words of others come to pass? What happens when someone says, “You are never going to be successful”? “You don’t have what it takes.” “You are not qualified.” They say, “You are not capable of doing this.” Do the negative words of others seal your future? They don’t have to.

We have been talking about The Power of Words. We will end the series today. I want to talk to you about Overcoming Negative Words.

(Amplified) Proverbs 18:20 A man’s self shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth; and with the consequence of his words he must be satisfied [whether good or evil].

Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life].

Words are seeds we sow which produce fruit. Our lives are products of those seeds. If we are going to live a victorious and abundant life, we must guard our words. We must plant good seed.

Overcoming Negative Words

TODAY I WANT TO APPROACH OUR study a little differently.

We have been talking about what our own words do, but what about negative words spoken to us? Do the negative words of others come to pass? What happens when someone says, “You are never going to be successful”? “You don’t have what it takes.” “You are not qualified.” Or “You are not capable of doing this.”

Do the negative words of others seal your future? They don’t have to seal your future. It all depends on what you do with those negative words.

We have the choice to agree with those negative words and allow them to take root. Or, we can choose to give them no place and they lay dormant.

I READ AN ARTICLE ABOUT Magnolia seeds 2,300 years old found in an ancient tomb.

For 2,300 years, the seed laid dormant, but when planted and watered, it grew into a tree and produced blossoms. [1]

Things people say about you cannot hurt you UNLESS planted, watered, and nurtured. You plant it by believing it. You water and fertilize it by dwelling upon it. If you do this, it will produce fruit.

I HAVE HEARD PARENTS tell their children they were stupid and would never amount to anything.

Thirty years later, the child does not work, is on drugs, and is an alcoholic with a wasted life. Those words got into the heart and spirit of the child and directed the child’s life. They did come to pass.

Overcoming Negative Words

If someone says to you, “You will never be successful.” “Your dreams will never come to pass” and you dwell on those words then by your own action you have given them life. You will begin to have a defeated outlook on life. You will begin seeing yourself as unsuccessful and a failure, and you will stop chasing your dreams if you have any. Eventually, you will even begin speaking those negative words of defeat about yourself.

YOU MUST REALIZE YOU CONTROL your own destiny through the power of your words.

You cannot control what people say about you, but you can control if those words take root and grow in your life. It’s you who decides if you will receive the words as seed, or reject the words.

For example, we are to hold on to some words and use them to take us to our destinies.

1 Timothy 1:18 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;

Those words needed to be held and planted. Prophecy is extremely important to living a life of victory. Other words cannot be allowed to be planted.

2 Corinthians 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ

There are other words and thoughts that must be cast down and sealed in a tomb to remain dormant.

Overcoming Negative Words

WHAT YOU SAY ABOUT YOURSELF SUPERSEDES ANYTHING ANYONE SAYS ABOUT YOU.

The best way to combat negative words is by knowing what God says about us. You need prophecies. You need to begin seeing yourself as God sees you, and you need to begin saying about yourself what God says about you.

God says you are more than a conqueror.

Romans 8:37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

God says you can do all things.

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

God says you are the head and not the tail. You are at the top of your game, not the bottom.

Deuteronomy 28:13 And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath

God sees you healthy and prospering.

3 John 1:2  Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

You are an overcomer. Speaking of antichrists the Bible says,

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 1 John 4:4

Overcoming Negative Words

Even an antichrist can’t stop you. Speaking of the devil the Bible says,

because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one. 1 John 2:14

Nothing can stop you. The devil can’t stop you.

YOUR ATTITUDE MUST BE, “I DON’T CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS ABOUT ME.

I am destined to win. God is on my side. He has a plan to prosper me and give me a hope and a future.” If you are going to live a victorious life you must think victorious and not allow negative words to take root in your heart. Refuse them and begin speaking God’s vision for you over your own life.

WORDS CAN EASILY DESTROY A person’s self-esteem.

Many people have been raised in negative environments. Because of this, they go through life negatively and critically. They constantly put people down. They constantly speak discouraging words. If you get around negative people they will attempt to plant negative words into your soul.

I WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO TELL YOU today how once you become a Christ follower no one will ever say anything to hurt you, but you know this is not the case.

Overcoming Negative Words

No matter how good a person you may be, no matter how kind or spiritual you are, people are going to say things that have the ability to hurt and offend you and mess up your life.

It’s so important you know how to handle the negative things people have said about you and will say about you.

Throughout life, you will be offered plenty of negative offending words.

Luke 17:1-4

1 Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come!

2 It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.

Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.

4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.

Jesus said it is impossible to go through life without being offended. The Greek word translated offences is skandalon. Of course, we get our word “scandal” from it. It literally means “the movable stick or trigger of a trap.” Offensive words trigger a trap of the enemy meant to cause us to stumble. The person speaking the negative words will be dealt with. This is not our deal. Our part is to forgive – seven times in a day if necessary. In other words, do not allow those words to become an offense planted in us. If they do, the trap is sprung and we will go through life trapped by those negative words.

Overcoming Negative Words

SOME OF US HAVE HAD MANY NEGATIVE things said to us and about us.

Perhaps a parent said something. Perhaps a person we greatly respected said something negative. We didn’t know any better. We tripped the stick and the trap was sprung. Those negative words have held us trapped all our lives. But I believe today is your day to be set free.

Today you begin renewing your mind by beginning to see yourself as God sees you. God sees you as being successful.

Psalms 1:3 …and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

God sees you fulfilled and happy.

Psalms 128:2 …happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.

You can come out of the trap if you will begin agreeing with God and get his vision of victory for your life. If you will, God will take you places and do things for you you’ve never dreamed about.

BECAUSE YOUR PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS ONLY REACHED A CERTAIN LEVEL in life does not mean God wants you to stay there.

God wants to take you to a higher level. God wants you to break out of this trap and set a new standard of life for your family.

Overcoming Negative Words

The church should not be satisfied with the status quo. We should be all about changing and advancing. We should be dreaming bigger dreams than our parents, and we should be believing God for the extraordinary and supernatural. God wants to do new and unusual things in our lives. Stop listening to offenses and listen to God.

I ENCOURAGE YOU TODAY TO ASK GOD IF there are areas of your life limiting you.

Have you been trapped by negative words? Has someone or maybe several people said things keeping you from reaching your potential? Has someone said something like, “You are not smart enough”? “You are not talented enough.” “You are not big enough.” Or, “You come from the wrong side of the tracks.” Did those words hurt you? Do you remember them vividly? If so, they got in and took root. You didn’t know any better. You didn’t know how to stop them from taking root and growing, but today all this changes. Jesus is going to set you free.

John 8:36   So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

You may have been born in the natural into a family that never accomplished much. You may have been programmed with more “you can’t do” than “you can do.” But when you were born again, all this changed, and you were born into the family of the Most High God. Your big brother is the King of kings and you are joint heirs with him. God has crowned you with glory and honor. There is nothing you can’t do. You have been hand-picked and chosen by Almighty God. He formed you in your mother’s womb. Your days are written and planned for success. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. God’s good thoughts for you outnumber the grains of sand. God loves you more than you can imagine.

Overcoming Negative Words

How many know who Sam Walton was? Sam Walton began Wal-Mart. He was born in 1923, raised on a small farm, moved from town to town, and was raised during the “great depression.” He would not settle for status quo. Sam Walton desired to succeed. He pressed. Though learning did not come easily to him, he became an honor student. Though athletics did not come easily, he became the quarterback for his high school football team. He worked milking the family cow, selling milk, and delivering papers to help the family through the depression.

Though money was not available, he decided to go to college.

He worked his way through and then went to work for J.C. Penny’s making $75.00 a week. He was always a Christ follower and active in the church. He left J.C. Penny’s, borrowed money from his father-in-law, and bought a retail store for himself. He sold it for a profit and then opened another and another and another. What we know as Wal-Mart today began as Walton’s Family Center. A poor farm boy became one of the richest, most successful men in the world because he would not allow anyone or anything to stop him. He refused to listen to any negative words. Today Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the world and employs over one million people. [1]

Sam Walton broke the spirit of poverty over his family once and for all. You can do the same thing. If you will believe what God says about you, there is nothing you can’t do. Your generations to come will benefit from what you have done with your life. You will take yourself and your heirs to a new level of life.

Overcoming Negative Words

GOD IS A BIG GOD AND HE WANTS TO DO BIG THINGS in your life.

He wants to do more than you have asked him to do. He wants to do more than you can think.

Ephesians 3:20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us

I have had some of my closest friends and some good preachers say, “Delbert, what are you doing in LaFayette? You will never reach your potential in this little town.” But when you have a dream in your heart and a vision of victory, it doesn’t matter what people say. I know God can make a way where there is no way.

I have been criticized in every way you can imagine, but I refuse to allow those words to take root, so I refuse to allow those seeds to be planted.

Isaiah 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.

Overcoming Negative Words

Let’s make it a little clearer.

(NIV) Isaiah 54:17 no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the LORD.

We are the ones who are to condemn every tongue accusing us. At first reading, we will think the Lord will refute or condemn every evil tongue, but clearly it is our responsibility. Don’t allow negative tongues a place.

NEW AND UNUSUAL THINGS ARE WHAT God wants to do in our lives. Don’t live a life of status quo. Reach for the stars. Do something great.

John 14:12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

Don’t get small-minded on God. Where are the people who will believe God for greater things?

GOD’S PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE IS SO MUCH LARGER THAN YOU HAVE EVER IMAGINED.

Remember David? He had a dream to be king of Israel. At every turn, people were negative. His dad left him out of the selection process when Samuel came to anoint the next king. With Goliath, David’s brother Eliab was negative towards David.

Overcoming Negative Words

1 Samuel 17:28 When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the desert? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is

Do you know what David did?

1 Samuel 17:30 He then turned away to someone else and brought up the same matter

David just turned away and kept pursuing success. Your family may not understand, but don’t let it stop you.

King Saul spoke negative words to David also.

1 Samuel 17:33 Saul replied, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a boy

People in authority may not understand. David didn’t allow that to take root either. David saw himself as God saw him – victorious.

1 Samuel 17:37 The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.

You’ve got to see yourself as God sees you. David saw himself as victorious. He took out Goliath even though no one thought he could. David knew he was destined to do great things. What if he had listened to the negative words?

Overcoming Negative Words

Some of you have had people do nothing but push you down and tell you what you can’t do. I want to encourage and challenge you today. I want you to hear God say, “YOU CAN DO ALL THINGS.” You are destined to do great things. You are not destined to keep a few sheep in the wilderness. The Lord has destined you to sit on the throne. God has seated you in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Break free from every trap set by negative words. Change your way of thinking and see yourself as God sees you. Refute every negative word formed against you. Don’t limit God and don’t limit yourself. God will take you to victory after victory. You will enjoy the abundant life God has planned for you.

Give the Lord a shout and hand clap. Amen!
