Communion To Impact
1 Corinthians 10:15-18 I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the COMMUNION of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the COMMUNION of the body of Christ? For we being many are ONE bread, and ONE body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?
The natural priests in the temple participated in the sacrifices. The Apostle Paul tells us that the cup of blessing and the bread which we break, is COMMUNION. It is communion of the blood and the body of Christ, but what does communion mean? The word translated communion in verse 16 is the Greek word koinonia and means partnership, i.e. (lit.) participation, or (social) interaction. It actually has no meaning connected with eating bread or drinking juice. The NIV translation uses the word participation instead of communion. I know we “participate” together as we ingest communion, but that is not all meant here. The thought is we actually participate in the crucifixion – the body and the blood – of Christ on the cross. Let me show you what I mean.
Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
I died with Christ, but live to do something. The Bible gives us a similar thought when speaking of baptism.
Romans 6:4-5 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.
It is not that we only drink and eat the elements of communion. We participate in the scourged wounded body and the shed blood of Christ.
Communion is much more than our eating bread, drinking juice, and thinking about Jesus. COMMUNION is our participation in Christ’s body and blood. Christ’s blood becomes our blood. We become Christ’s body.
1 Corinthians 12:27 Now YE ARE THE BODY OF CHRIST, and members in particular.
My hands and my feet become nailed. We are responsible for bringing the stripes that heal to the lives of hurting people. We hand them Christ’s salvation. Communion is participating in impacting the lives of people.
1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes [NIV – WOUNDS] ye were healed.
We participate in the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual healing of people. We impact lives. Communion is to impact. We become responsible for bringing the blood that brings forgiveness and remission (freedom) from sin. We participate in bringing forgiveness and deliverance. I will read the passage once again from the NIV translation.
1 Corinthians 10:16-17 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a PARTICIPATION IN THE BLOOD OF CHRIST? And is not the bread that we break a PARTICIPATION IN THE BODY OF CHRIST? Because there is ONE LOAF, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the ONE LOAF.
As you have COMMUNION today, you participate in Christ’s crucifixion. You are to take the healing stripes/wounds to people. You take the cleansing blood to people.
1Corinthians 11:23-26 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. FOR AS OFTEN AS YE EAT THIS BREAD, AND DRINK THIS CUP, YE DO SHEW THE LORD’S DEATH TILL HE COME.
We have given you two Impact cards. On one side of the card are numbered lines. Will you take a few moments and write the names of the people to whom you desire to shew the body and blood of Jesus Christ to this year? You do not have to fill every line or maybe you will want another card on which you can write more names. Write the name(s) on both cards you have been given.
You keep one in a place that will keep you reminded daily. (I will hang my card on my rearview mirror.) Bring the other card forward when you come to receive communion. Place it in the silver container and light one candle. Then come and participate in communion – the body and the blood of the Lord. Pray that you will shew the Lord’s death to those whose names you have written. Impact their lives.
