John 10:10; Proverbs 21:20; Ecclesiastes 10:19; Proverbs 22:7; 1 Corinthians 6:19; Romans 8:6-7; John 8:28; Matthew 15:14; 1 Thessalonians 5:23

In the movie Braveheart, William Wallace faces execution for treason because of his fight for Scottish independence. On the eve of his execution, his lover and wife of the heir to the throne visits Wallace, begging him to retract his position so he might live or at least suffer a more merciful death. His sentence was death by torture. Wallace responded, “ALL MEN DIE. BUT NOT ALL MEN TRULY LIVE.”

Few people ever GET A LIFE worth dying for. How is your life?

John 10:10   The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might [go to heaven when they die? – No!] have life [now], and that they might have it more abundantly.

Our series is called GET A LIFE. In reality, it is a series of questions: Why Am I Here?; What Is Important to Me? Am I Making Mile Markers?; What Am I Good At?; What Do I Need to Learn 1 (Unlearn); 2 (Manage Resources – Time); and today 3. Hopefully, you have learned that it is by your ignorance of those questions that you make it easy for the thief to steal, kill, and destroy life from you. It’s like not locking your home doors or leaving them open so thieves can walk in and take what they want.

Money What Do I Need to Learn Part 3

Last time we talked about how the thief comes to take life from us by our not managing the resource of time. Let’s talk about another resource God gives us to experience the abundant life that we must manage well if we are ever to experience the abundant life Jesus came to give us.

LEARN TO MANAGE MONEY.

How many of us would be honest enough to say that we have squandered – burned, wasted, and foolishly managed – thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars? I do not need to spend much time convincing you that the waste of the money resource stops millions, probably billions, of people from GETTING A LIFE.

Proverbs 21:20  The WISE HAVE WEALTH and luxury, but FOOLS spend whatever they get.

Which side of that scripture do you fit? I will not exegete that passage for fear of offending many. As we have already established, almost everyone has been “foolish” with much money. Managing money requires much “unlearning” for most people.

Ecclesiastes 10:19  A feast is made for laughter, and wine makes life merry, but MONEY is the ANSWER for EVERYTHING.

Money What Do I Need to Learn Part 3

Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible says, “…money serves for all purposes… Though wine makes merry, it will not be a house for us, nor a bed, nor clothing, nor provisions and portions for children; but money, if men have enough of it, will be all these… Money of itself answers nothing; it will neither feed nor clothe, but, as it is the instrument of commerce, IT ANSWERS ALL THE OCCASIONS OF THIS PRESENT LIFE. What is to be had may be had for money.”

No matter what the verse totally means, there are solutions to your life that ONLY money will answer.

Proverbs 22:7  The rich rule over the poor, and the BORROWER IS SERVANT to the lender.

Let’s be honest. If you are deeply in debt, you are a slave to that debt. You can’t “afford” to take off work. You can’t “afford” to get sick or “afford” to tithe. Most “Christians” do not even tip God. Most give more to a restaurant waitress (15%) than God.

Money What Do I Need to Learn Part 3

The more indebted you are, the less ability you have to GET A LIFE. What kind of life could you have? How could your life be enhanced if you had half of those wasted thousands from mismanagement? What could you do for the kingdom of God, your family, and yourself? It’s not that you have not had money. Be honest. Is it that you have not had money or that you mismanaged money?

Where is all that wasted money now? Who got it? The thief came and took it from you and will keep coming until you stop him by learning to manage your resource of money.

The realization of that is big. The solution is simple. You sarcastically say, “Oh sure, it’s real simple, Delbert.” It really is. The solution is wrapped up in one question: WHAT DO YOU NEED TO LEARN HERE? A follow-up question would be: Do you need to UNLEARN something so you can learn correctly? What is your attitude toward money? Is it a resource for an abundant life or simply something to spend on a whim? How did your family of origin manage money? What do you need to learn about the proper way to manage money?

Money What Do I Need to Learn Part 3

Your financial success is not going just to happen.

I pray you win the lottery, but that’s probably not going to happen. You need to learn how to budget/discipline, negotiate a loan, buy stocks, plan your retirement, and properly give to the kingdom of God. Today, more readily available information about those subjects is available. Take advantage of the information.

Probably, as a pastor, I hear more about money problems than any other problem. People give all sorts of excuses about why they don’t have money. The truth is most people do not manage money well. It’s incredible how the mismanagement of the resource of money affects EVERYTHING (I think that is what Ecc 10:19 is referencing) – marriage, stress, obtaining physical assistance, education for you and your children, your ability to give to the kingdom, and on and on. You will never GET A LIFE until you learn to manage the money resource.

Let’s look at another misused resource(s) God gives us that we do not manage well.

MAINTAIN THE BRAIN AND BODY. Your body is a resource given to you by God.

Money What Do I Need to Learn Part 3

1 Corinthians 6:19  Do you not know that YOUR BODY IS A TEMPLE of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

The scriptures reference your body as a temple. Does your temple need maintenance? Do you do any exercise? Do you do anything that puts demands on your physical body to remain toned? Or do you go to the gym, work out, work in your yard, jog, walk, or work using your body? Don’t wait until it’s too late and you can’t exercise your body. I UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR SOME PEOPLE TO EXERCISE BECAUSE OF PHYSICAL SITUATIONS, but most people can do something to manage the wonderful resource of their body.

This was one of my pet peeves with my Dad. For the last several years of his life, he would sit all day long and do nothing. I bought him a bicycle wheel to peddle while he sat, but he would only do it if we were watching. He also had little weights to lift while he was sitting, but again… He eventually got to where he could hardly get around. I feel the thief stole years of life from my Dad.

Money What Do I Need to Learn Part 3

How about your grooming habits and personal hygiene?

Teeth? How about your eating habits? (Should we do our little arm shake test?) How about “medication”? Are you taking it because you need to or “want” to? Are you excessive with alcohol, nicotine, or caffeine? How about sleep? When was your last physical checkup with your doctor? What is your body saying to you? It is wired to yell at you when something is wrong. You only have one body. You will never get A LIFE if you refuse to learn to maintain the beautiful resources of your body.

Concerning your brain, do you MAKE your mind exercise, such as learning new information or expanding your current information? Your mind is lazy and rebellious.

Romans 8:6-7  If your sinful nature controls your mind, there is death. But if the Holy Spirit controls your mind, there is life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.

Money What Do I Need to Learn Part 3

For example, when was the last time you read a book? My Dad died at 76. On the other hand, my wife’s Grandfather died at 90. I am convinced he lived to 90 because he maintained his brain by exercising his mind. I remember him living with us and watching him late in his 80s reading his Bible. YOUR BRAIN/MIND IS YOUR MOST VALUABLE RESOURCE. When people stop learning, they begin their dying process.

HAVE YOU LET YOURSELF GO? You don’t have to be old to let yourself go. I see teenagers do it all the time. You will never GET A LIFE until you learn to maintain your body and brain.

Let’s look at another issue we must learn to GET A LIFE.

LEARN WHO YOU ARE.

Jesus knew EXACTLY who he was and is. Before I talk about who he is, I’ll ask you who he is, or rather, who he said he was. It’s sort of a Bible quiz.

Money What Do I Need to Learn Part 3

John 8:28  Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the SON OF MAN, then shall ye know that I AM HE, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.

Did you get it right? The Son of man is Christ’s favorite way of relaying to people who he is. More than he referenced himself as Christ or as the Son of God, HE KNEW HIMSELF as the Son of man. Yet, strangely, I seldom hear anyone reference him that way. “Son of man” reveals his “humanness,” but not only as a Jew – as the Son of “MANkind.”

Jesus is an expression of what humanity is to be. It’s also his expression of his deity (Dan 7:13). My point is that although you may not know who he is, Jesus knows exactly who he is. Successful people who GET A LIFE know exactly who they are, even if it is not exactly who everyone else thinks they are. Do you know exactly who you are? Let’s look at a few ways to know exactly who we are.

Money What Do I Need to Learn Part 3

Know Your MOTIVATIONS.

A person who knows who they are knows what motivates them. What makes you “tick?” What turns your “crank?” Who is that person deep inside of you who wants out? People unaware of who they are do not understand what pushes their buttons or yanks their chains. They know they were pushed, yanked, and blindsided. Then, they become upset because they respond to any and every force that comes along. People who know who they are only respond to specific forces and ignore things and people who steal, kill, and destroy life from them. Once, his disciples told Jesus he offended some Pharisees (imagine that). Jesus said…

(NLT) Matthew 15:14   …SO IGNORE THEM. They are blind guides leading the blind, and if one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a ditch.

When you respond to just anything, you fall into the ditches of life, and the thief robs you. Jesus said do not respond to just anything or just anyone. Only allow specific things to push your buttons or yank your chain.

Money What Do I Need to Learn Part 3

Know Your BOUNDARIES.

A person who knows who they are has established boundaries as to where their world ends and the rest of the world begins. If you do not establish boundaries, you will find your life being run by other people. When afraid of hurting the feelings of others by saying “No,” you become trapped by their expectations. You GET A LIFE for them, but not for you.

As a young pastor, I greatly struggled here. I thought that to be a good pastor, I had to please everyone. Once, we were going through one of those immature church squabbles where I, of course, was the focus. I offended some people. After church one Sunday, I drove to a person’s house and asked them how I did that day and if they were satisfied with me. Was I in a ditch or what? I don’t think Jesus would have done that.

Please don’t misunderstand me. I genuinely care that I do well, but I was allowing them to run my life and, actually, this ministry. Today, I know who I am by knowing my boundaries. You must know your boundaries to GET A LIFE.

Money What Do I Need to Learn Part 3

Know Your PERSONALITY.

People who know who they are have learned their personality mix. Your personality mix is your unique signature, soul DNA, soul fingerprint, etc., in life. There is no one else like you. When people think about you, they are thinking about your personality. So, you must learn your personality to know how you come across to the world. It’s incredible how many people go through life without realizing how they come across to people. They never understand why certain people attract them and why others repel them.

Are you a quiet person or a loud person? What causes you to be that way? It’s your personality temperament. Does being around people energize you, or do you need to be alone to energize? Are you an upbeat, laughing person, or are you more suppressed and serious? Do you enjoy leading and accomplishing goals daily, or would you rather help and take your time at what you do? Are you a critical perfectionist, or rather a “geterdone” person? Do you do it if it’s fun or only if it makes everyone happy?

Money What Do I Need to Learn Part 3

Your personality and temperament determine all those issues. What makes you tick and become “ticked off ” is determined by your personality. Do you know your personality? If not, how will you ever know WHO YOU ARE?

Money What Do I Need to Learn Part 3 sermon video audio notes

Studying personality temperaments was the most revealing thing I ever did. It helped me understand myself and how I portrayed myself to the world around me.

It so enlightened me that I spent years writing my own study book and evaluation. I wanted to help others grasp this most crucial issue. It helped me understand why specific things yanked my chain and pushed my buttons. At one time, my temperament commanded me. Today, I command it. You will never know who you are unless you learn your personality temperament.

 Know Your SPIRITUAL Condition.

People who know who they are have learned their spiritual condition. Like it or not, believe it or not, you are more than a body that thinks. You are “spiritual.”

Money What Do I Need to Learn Part 3

1 Thessalonians 5:23  And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole SPIRIT and SOUL and BODY be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Here are some questions to ponder: What do I think about God? How would I describe my relationship with him? What draws me closer to God? Where do I see him most clearly? What questions do I have for him? What do the two of us talk about, and what do we enjoy doing together? Is God for me or against me? Is he a loving being who delights in me or is he a judge, and is he hard to please? Am I afraid of him? How do I practice my faith? How do others know what I believe?

It is impossible to be aware of yourself until you are aware of what you feel and believe about God. Many people, even Christ Followers, do not know precisely what they feel about God. You will find God right in the middle when you discover who you are. I do not know a single person who knows who they are and does not know how they feel about God.

You must be highly aware of who you are to GET A LIFE. YOU are who YOU bring to every good or bad encounter of life, and YOU are the first person YOU deal with every morning and the last person YOU reason with every night. It is essential that YOU learn exactly WHO YOU ARE – your MOTIVATIONS, your BOUNDARIES, your PERSONALITY, and your SPIRITUAL CONDITION.

Money What Do I Need to Learn Part 3

The point I want to end our series with is this:

We have discussed many things we need to learn to GET A LIFE. YOU SHOULD BE TERRIFIED YOU MIGHT FAIL TO LEARN WHAT YOU SHOULD LEARN TO GET A LIFE. The thief comes. What life has he already stolen from you? You can turn that around and greatly limit him. You can add deadbolts, burglar alarms, barbed wire fences, Doberman Pinchers, etc. to your life. Will you?

You didn’t choose to be born, and you can’t get out of dying. But you do choose whether or not you live. All people die, but not all people truly live.
