Coming of Jesus the Son of Man 1 Luke 21:5-19

Coming of Jesus the Son of Man 1 Luke 21:5-19 audio video notes. Here we are given specifics on the coming of Jesus the Son of man by Jesus Himself. Many are taught this is about the great tribulation, the rapture of the church, and end-time events. It’s not, but it is a coming of Jesus the Son of Man. This may not be what you’ve been taught, but let’s examine the Scriptures and then make a decision.

Coming of Jesus the Son of Man 1 Luke 21:5-19 audio video notes

Scriptures: Luke 21:22-31, Luke 21:35, Matthew 2:6, Matthew 2:20, Luke 5:24, Luke 8:8, Luke 21:23, Luke 21:36, Luke 21:32, Luke 21:5-8, Matthew 24:3, (KJV) Ephesians 3:2, Luke 19:43, Luke 13:34-35, Matthew 23:37-38, Luke 21:8-11, Luke 21:12-19

It would have been either Wednesday night after Jesus left the temple or Thursday prior to what we call “the Last Supper” of Christ’s Passion Week. The passage we now study is a very lengthy passage beginning at Luke chapter 21: 5 and going through 21:36. Here Jesus gave specifics on THE COMING OF JESUS THE SON OF MAN (Luk 21:27, 36). Our goal today is to study verses 5-19 allowing the Bible, not man’s doctrine, to teach us. I want to read some of the passages we will be studying so you will know what we are talking about.

Luke 21:22-31 For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people… (25) “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.

At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.

We will actually study this passage next week, but how many have been taught this is about and associated with the second coming of Jesus, the great tribulation, the rapture of the church, and end-time events? It sounds like The Book of Revelation, doesn’t it?

By way of preface, I will be showing you why I believe what I believe and teach. I don’t know everything about this, but I do know a lot. I am constantly seeing new truths and pieces of evidence only verifying what I believe. Many teach this as eschatology (final events in the history of the world or of humankind) – “the second coming of Jesus,” or the end of time and the end of the world. I don’t. It is a coming of Jesus the Son of Man and the end of an age (Mat 24:3), but not our age.

The church has a fascination with the apocalyptical element. It simply can’t get away from “the end of time” doctrines. So, if you disagree with me, it’s fine. Allow it to be a discussion point and not a division point. For many of you, this will reaffirm what you’ve heard me say over the years. For many of you this may be new, mind blowing, and questionable information. At any rate, in this passage, the Lord Jesus gave his own detailed teaching about the coming of Jesus as the Son of Man. Let’s begin by reading a portion.

Luke 21:35 For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole EARTH.

The Greek word translated earth is extremely important.

earth – ge {ghay} – the main land as opposed to the sea or water; the inhabited earth; a country, land enclosed within fixed boundaries, a tract of land, territory, region

I need to deal with this initially to help you. Here are a few uses of ge:

(First use) Matthew 2:6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land [ge] of Judah…

and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land [ge] of Israel… Matthew 2:20

But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth [ge] to forgive sins….” He said to the paralyzed man… Luke 5:24

Still other seed fell on good soil [ge]. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.” Luke 8:8

How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land [ge] and wrath against THIS people. Luke 21:23

The Greek word ge is used 226 times in the New Testament. The same word is used to describe the entire inhabited earth, a nation, or a garden-sized parcel of land. The context determines its meaning. Here in Luke 21, the context is the land of Israel and specifically Jerusalem and the temple. With this said look at the very next verse in our study.

Luke 21:36 Be always on the watch, and pray that YOU may be able to escape all that is ABOUT TO HAPPEN, and that YOU may be able to stand before THE SON OF MAN.”

Jesus was talking to his disciples. He said “Pray that YOU…” and “that YOU may be…” This is about an event about to happen. This would be an event taking place in the lifetime of the disciples meaning the Son of Man would indeed come while most of them were alive.

In verse 32 of the passage we’re studying Jesus said,

Luke 21:32 “I tell you the truth, THIS GENERATION will certainly not pass away until ALL THESE THINGS HAVE HAPPENED.

At the moment Jesus said this combined with the events taking place the next two days it would appear to the human eye the first coming of Jesus was a dismal disaster and failure. Jesus wanted his people to know it wasn’t over and definitely wanted them to escape what was coming upon their generation.

Luke 21:5-8 Some of his disciples were remarking about how THE TEMPLE was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, “AS FOR WHAT YOU SEE HERE, the time will come when NOT ONE STONE WILL BE LEFT ON ANOTHER; EVERY ONE OF THEM WILL BE THROWN DOWN.” “Teacher,” they asked, “WHEN WILL THESE THINGS HAPPEN? And WHAT WILL BE THE SIGN THAT THEY ARE ABOUT TO TAKE PLACE?” He replied…

This began the longest and most detailed recorded answer to any question ever posed to Jesus. We need to know this. Jesus and the gospel writers took more time and gave more space to this topic than any other topic. This section is paralleled in Matthew chapters 24-25 and Mark 13, so if you want more study compare these scriptures. Luke gave it about 32 verses. Matthew gave it 51 verses in chapter 24 and 46 verses in chapter 25 – a total of 97 verses in Matthew alone. Mark gave it 37 verses in chapter 13. This is a total of 166 verses given to this one topic! The disciples’ questions were (1) When will these things happen; (2) What will be the sign that they are about to take place?

The questions came in response to Jesus’ statement about the massive beautiful temple being dismantled stone by stone. Please note the questions were not “when will the rapture happen” and “when will the world end.” The questions are when will the temple be destroyed and what events will take place to let us know it’s about to happen.

However, I do need to address what Matthew wrote for clarity.

Matthew 24:3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign OF YOUR COMING and of the END OF THE AGE?” (KJV – “end of the world”)

The word translated “world” (KJV) and “age” is aion {ahee-ohn’} a period of time. It doesn’t mean all of time. We can relate to the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Dark Age, etc. So the question is “What is the sign of the end of the temple age, or we could say Judaism age – sacrificial system, or the age of the Law of Moses?” Jesus connected this coming he’s explaining with the end of the age. This coming of Jesus will and did terminate the age of the sacrificial system and dispensation of the Law.

This section is about the temple and the sacrificial system age ending. It is not about the end of time – eschatology. This is massively important if we properly interpret the passage. Nothing in this passage is about the literal end of the world. It’s about the end of the temple age and the beginning of the dispensation (administration) age of Grace – the New Testament age or church age.

(KJV) Ephesians 3:2 If ye have heard of THE DISPENSATION OF THE GRACE OF GOD which is given me to you-ward

God rules by grace today (see Grace The Throne of God by Delbert Young on Kindle). The Temple age must end so our present age could come.

The temple was a wonder of the world. It was one of the largest most impressive buildings in the world and under construction for eighty-five years. Herod the Great began its construction around 20 BC, so it was about fifty years in construction when Jesus made his amazing statement about it coming down. It was a majestic wonder. (I’ll show you an image of a model.) Jesus said every single stone would be thrown down. That was a lot of huge stones thrown down! The disciples could not imagine this amazing edifice coming down the way Jesus said it would. Yet Jesus said it would over and over. Jesus entering and speaking over Jerusalem only a few days earlier said:

Luke 19:43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave ONE STONE ON ANOTHER, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”

Why was it coming down? The next day after the Triumphal Entry Jesus cleansed the temple. Impressive as it was, it didn’t impress Jesus. To Jesus, it was a cave of thieves. The temple was coming down and Jerusalem was coming down with it.

Here are the cold hard historical facts:

On August 29th, 70 AD, Titus, the Roman general, and the Roman army broke through the final wall of Jerusalem after a long siege. The people were massacred. The temple was set on fire. Other than a few buildings the city was made desolate. Shortly afterwards the temple began being dismantled stone by stone until it was totally removed. The beautiful polished stones were taken and used by Rome. The Ark of the Covenant, Altar of Incense, Shewbread Table, Golden Candlestick, Bronze Laver Bowl, every piece – every thong, every shovel, fork, etc. used in the worship system was taken. Nothing was left.

Today all remaining is a portion of what is called the Wailing Wall and a few of the massive foundation stones in the ground the Romans didn’t want to remove. Actually, I believe God left them to show us this actually happened exactly as Jesus said it would. Not one stone was left upon another. Today the Muslim temple called The Dome of the Rock (image) is sitting over those stones exactly where the temple once stood.

Again and again, Jesus spoke concerning the desolation of Jerusalem. About six months earlier he’d said:

Luke 13:34-35 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! Look, YOUR HOUSE IS LEFT TO YOU DESOLATE

He said the identical statement again this day just before leaving the temple as he condemned the teachers of the Law and Pharisees.

Matthew 23:37-38 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. Look, YOUR HOUSE IS LEFT TO YOU DESOLATE.

Luke 21:5-8 is at least the fourth time Jesus said it’s coming down! I suppose it was one thing for Jesus to say it miles away when the disciples couldn’t see it, but when looking at the thing, how could it be? So, they asked how would they know and be able to warn believers when to flee Jerusalem.

Luke 21:8-11 He replied: “WATCH OUT THAT YOU ARE NOT DECEIVED. For many will come in my name, CLAIMING, ‘I AM HE,’ and, ‘THE TIME IS NEAR.’ DO NOT FOLLOW THEM. When you hear of WARS and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but THE END WILL NOT COME RIGHT AWAY.” THEN HE SAID TO THEM: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great EARTHQUAKES, FAMINES AND PESTILENCES in various places, and fearful EVENTS and great signs from heaven.

(Isn’t it interesting how no one ever claimed to be a resurrected Buda, or Mohammad, or Joseph Smith? Why counterfeit the counterfeit? All the nut cases are always Jesus’ counterfeits. Many came immediately after the days of Jesus and they continue to come – Charles Manson, Jim Jones, David Koresh, Marshall Applewhite, and on and on.).

It’s also interesting how before Jesus gave the true signs to look for he gave them deceiving signs. Jesus gave the signs people would use to project the end. You’ve heard doom and gloom forecasters do this. Many people are caught up in this. Maybe you’ve been caught up by it. Don’t be. These are deceiving signs. Though Jesus wasn’t even talking about us and the end of the world these signs continue to be used on us! They were not valid signs then and are not valid signs now. “Watch out that you are not deceived.

Luke 21:12-19 “But before all this, they will lay hands on YOU and persecute YOU. They will deliver YOU to synagogues and prisons, and YOU will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. This will result in YOUR being witnesses to them. But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how YOU will defend yourselves. For I will give YOU words and wisdom that none of YOUR adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. YOU will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and THEY WILL PUT SOME OF YOU TO DEATH. All men will hate YOU because of me. But not a hair of YOUR head will perish. By standing firm YOU will gain life.

Who does it appear Jesus was talking to here?

Jesus spoke to and about his disciples present because this would come upon them, not us, or a future generation. Jesus told how their persecution would result in being witnesses. We know from history this is exactly what happened to every single one of them. It was to them specific, but we need to learn.

When people persecute us in large or small ways the persecution should result in our being witnesses to them. Recall the last time someone did something to or said something about you. Were you a witness? Imagine how they were persecuted! Some would be put to death. Yet Jesus said, “Not a hair on their heads would perish”. He obviously didn’t mean they wouldn’t die. Rather by standing firm, they gained eternal life. Jesus explained the coming of Jesus the Son of Man.

We’ve got to stop for today, but next week we’ll talk about the questions “when” it would happen and the “sign” of the Son of Man’s coming. We’ll talk about the sun, moon, and stars as Jesus explained their part in his coming. To learn about this you’ll need to come back and learn about the coming of Jesus.
