Luke 6:12-16 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and JUDAS ISCARIOT, WHO BECAME A TRAITOR.
Judas Iscariot is the most colossal failure in human history as he did the most horrific deed ever done in human history by betraying the Son of God for money. Do you know anyone who’s ever turned their back on Jesus because of money?
The thing about Judas Iscariot is he is the most pungent example of how despicable the human heart can be. Judas Iscariot was called to the greatest calling a person could be called, that of an apostle of Jesus Christ. While the other eleven grew transforming every day becoming sons of God, Judas grew transforming every day becoming a son of hell.
We talked about Judas Iscariot last week. It’s not that we didn’t cover him sufficiently. The primary reason I am talking about Judas for two weeks is studying him rattled me. I knew some would not be here last week but would be here this week and I wanted to spread the love. I want to make sure as many of us as possible are rattled, hear about Judas, and learn from his life, not simply point a finger.

Let’s begin as we began last week. How many have ever been betrayed by someone you love and trusted? Now, how many have ever betrayed someone who loved and trusted you? So, there’s some Judas Iscariot in all or many of us.
Can it be possible for a person to be called by Jesus, hear the teaching of salvation and the kingdom from the lips of Jesus himself, observe miracles, personally watch demons exercised from people, be empowered to and teach, preach, heal, and deliver (Luk 9:1), yet go to their own place in hell? The apostle Peter said,
Acts 1:25 …this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas BY TRANSGRESSION FELL, that he might GO TO HIS OWN PLACE.
God did not control Judas, forcing him to betray Jesus. Judas fell. He wasn’t pushed. He was betrayed by his own volition. Jesus said,
Matthew 26:24-25 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! IT WOULD BE BETTER FOR HIM IF HE HAD NOT BEEN BORN.” Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, “Surely not I, Rabbi?” Jesus answered, “Yes, it is you.”
For anyone condemned to hell, it would be better for him if he had not been born. Once born, we never die. The worst of betrayal and treachery will not detour the plans of God. God’s plan did not so much as hiccup because of Judas’ treachery, but by committing the treachery Judas damned himself to hell with unspeakable eternal judgment.

Judas became disillusioned with Jesus and his disillusion turned to betrayal. All the disciples initially thought the Messiah would be a monarch in the style and steps of King David. That’s what religion taught the Messiah would be. In their minds, the kingdom would be a military, economic, and welfare kingdom. They looked for the Lion of the tribe of Judah, not the Lamb slain from the foundation. So, as Jesus made it more and more evident his kingdom was a spiritual kingdom and he would die, Judas realized that plan was not going to satisfy his greed and purpose.
Judas figured out a way to salvage some money from the situation.
Judas followed Jesus, believing Jesus would bring him wealth and power. He felt Jesus had deceived him, stolen his life, and robbed him. He left everything to follow Jesus. Judas would sell Jesus and redeem his losses. In short, Judas was disappointed with and bitter towards Jesus. Do you know someone who became disappointed with and bitter toward God? How about you? Perhaps, someone didn’t get healed, someone you loved died after much prayer for healing, a child or parent died, a relationship failed, you didn’t get that job, something happened with people claiming they were Christians that disappointed you badly, etc..
Sadly, I’ve seen every one of those and more disappointing and embittering people to betray and sell out Jesus. Is there a special place in hell awaiting those? Would it have been better for them to have not been born?

Let’s look at some of Judas’ story. A week or two before betrayal…
John 12:3-5 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But one of his disciples, JUDAS ISCARIOT, WHO WAS LATER TO BETRAY HIM, objected, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.”
That’s valuable perfume, what, perhaps $40,000 on the U.S. market? This Mary obviously had some financial means. This was an extremely extravagant act. Jesus had support from some people with substantial financial means. My wife buys perfume to wear when away from me and my sinuses, but she’s never purchased perfume costing a year’s wages. Judas Iscariot vocally and openly objected. Later, when John actually wrote his gospel, he saw greed was the true motivation of the heart of Judas, not the poor. A heart motivated by greed will always betray Jesus.
John 12:6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, HE — USED TO HELP HIMSELF TO WHAT WAS PUT INTO IT.
It’s amazing how none of the others ever suspected Judas of pilfering from their money bag. Judas was smooth. Jesus, knowing what was happening, rebuked Judas concerning Mary and her perfume.
John 12:7-8 “LEAVE HER ALONE,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
Not only could Judas not get his hands on the perfume money, but Jesus jabbed Judas’s heart again about Jesus’ death and Judas’ greed. People today are this way. We either pour out our perfume of love or betray him with our hearts of greed. We are a Mary or a Judas.

Matthew 26:14-16 Then one of the Twelve — the one called JUDAS ISCARIOT — went to the chief priests and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?” So they counted out for him THIRTY SILVER COINS. FROM THEN ON Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
Judas’ dark deed was deliberately planned and premeditated. Judas planned for days or maybe weeks. Because of the popularity and following of Jesus, Jesus could not be arrested just any time. It required a moment when Jesus was vulnerable. Jesus, knowing what Judas was doing, kept secret his vulnerable moments. Concerning the “Last Supper,” Jesus kept the location mysterious and guarded. Remember how Jesus strangely told Peter and John to go prepare the place by looking for and following a man with a pitcher of water (Mar 14; Luk 22).
The instructions seem meaningless until we realize Jesus didn’t want Judas to know where they would be. “With desire” Jesus wanted that moment with his apostles safe and uninterrupted.

John 13:2 And supper being ended, THE DEVIL HAVING NOW PUT INTO THE HEART OF JUDAS ISCARIOT, Simon’s son, to betray him;
Amazing! Judas had been with Jesus for no less than two years. It seems one’s heart would be so guarded toward the enticement of the devil being that close to Jesus day in and day out, but that’s not how the heart works.

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
It’s so sad to see a heart turn from God. There’s only one thing causing it – wickedness the devil placed there. Our heart is the target of the devil. Guard your heart above everything else (Pro. 4:23). When you sense displeasure with God and bitterness, when you sense something pulling you from God, go to battle. Don’t allow there to be a special place in hell for you. Listen! Even those closest to Jesus, even an apostle, can fall and go to their special place in hell because he allowed the devil to get into his heart.
John 13:5 AFTER THAT, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
After the devil was in Judas’ heart Jesus washed Judas’s feet. Jesus hadn’t given up on Judas. Jesus doesn’t give up on us. He’s reaching.
John 13:10-11 Jesus answered, “A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, THOUGH NOT EVERY ONE OF YOU.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not everyone was clean.
Keep your heart clean. Jesus said someone here is not clean. There had to be a buzz beginning. Who is not clean?

John 13:18-19 “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But THIS IS TO FULFILL THE SCRIPTURE: ‘He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.’ “I AM TELLING YOU NOW BEFORE IT HAPPENS, SO THAT WHEN IT DOES HAPPEN YOU WILL BELIEVE THAT I AM HE.
Jesus became more direct. He said, “I am telling you one of you eating my bread has betrayed me. I am telling you so when you realize what happened you will not think I lost control and God’s plan went awry. I know exactly who I’ve chosen. It’s the fulfillment of scripture and I knew the entire time. I tell you now so you will believe that I am He.” Jesus wanted them and us to know Judas didn’t blindside Jesus.
John 13:21-22 After he had said this, Jesus was TROUBLED IN SPIRIT and testified, “I tell you the truth, ONE OF YOU IS GOING TO BETRAY ME.” His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant.
Judas was so smooth at his deception. Not one disciple suspected Judas. Multiple times Jesus mentions the betrayal. The disciples couldn’t figure it out. They had no clue who the betrayer was. It says Jesus was troubled in spirit. The word troubled is tarasso {tar-as’-so} meaning to agitate, trouble (a thing, by the movement of its parts to and fro); to cause one inward commotion, take away his calmness of mind, disturb his equanimity (composure). Of course, Jesus was troubled. Satan himself was sitting next to Jesus in the person of Judas.
The wretched presence was polluting the room. How troubling is it to be betrayed! Inward commotion takes away all calmness and composure. Have you ever felt that? It’s something so dark it’s nauseating. We don’t think of Jesus ever being that way, but Judas Iscariot got to Jesus as no one else ever had. Who’s ever gotten to you that way? I’ve shaken so badly on the inside that my body shook in sleep, but who have you ever betrayed and caused to feel that way?

John 13:24-26 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.” Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?” Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.
A piece of bread was dipped into a jam-type paste and handed to Judas Iscariot. Yet, amazingly, still, neither John nor Peter could grasp the betrayer was Judas. Obviously, Judas was so deceptive and personable that they could not imagine it was Judas. Multiple times Jesus reached out to Judas in an attempt for Judas to repent. Jesus washed his feet. Jesus clearly gave Judas the opportunity to repent. Judas didn’t. When that happens…
John 13:27 As soon as Judas took the bread, SATAN ENTERED INTO HIM. “What you are about to do, do quickly,” Jesus told him,
Is it possible to sit next to Jesus, rub elbows with him, and yet be filled with Satan? Obviously, it is. Jesus could tolerate no longer Satan in the room. “Go! Leave!” Jesus said to Judas. There was nothing more Jesus could do. Grace and mercy expired. Satan moved in.
John 13:28-30 but NO ONE AT THE MEAL UNDERSTOOD WHY JESUS SAID THIS TO HIM. Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor. As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And IT WAS NIGHT.
Yes, it was night! It was black satanic darkness in the heart of Judas Iscariot. That’s what betrayal is. Still, somehow it didn’t compute to the other eleven. Obviously, Judas had so won their trust through his hypocrisy even though Jesus pointed Judas out, they couldn’t get it. “It can’t be Judas!” Amazing! The son of perdition can walk among us and we do not know it. Our best friend can be full of Satan and we do not realize it. It was night in the natural and it was night in the soul of Judas. To this day Judas is in utter darkness. Jesus sent Judas away. Jesus was not about to inaugurate the New Covenant with the first communion service with Satan in the room. Get out!

Judas left. So as Jesus was instituting the New Covenant and communion, Judas was instituting the darkest betrayal of all. Later, Judas led a detachment of soldiers and officials from the chief priest to where Jesus would be.
John 18:4-5 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. (And JUDAS THE TRAITOR WAS STANDING THERE WITH THEM.)
Jesus stood with the eleven. Judas stood with those who would execute Jesus. With whom do we stand in life? It will determine an eternal special place in hell with them or a special place in eternity with Jesus.
Matthew 26:48-49 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “THE ONE I KISS is the man; arrest him.” Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” AND KISSED HIM.
How diabolical can we become? The one I kiss… How sick, how wicked, is betrayal! Kissis the word kataphileo {kat-af-ee-leh’-o} meaning to kiss much, kiss again and again, kiss tenderly. A kiss is a mark of love, respect, tenderness, and closeness. Judas kissed Jesus repeatedly in a bazaar and sick act of betrayal. But, isn’t that what a man does to his wife, or a wife does to her husband in betrayal? More so, isn’t that what we do to Jesus when we kiss him with praise and worship on Sunday, but betray Jesus on Monday?

Matthew 27:3-5 When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was SEIZED WITH REMORSE and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders. “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.” “What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility. So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then HE WENT AWAY AND HANGED HIMSELF.
Satan used Judas but then tormented Judas for what he used Judas to do. The only way Judas knew to deal with things was with his answer to everything – money. “I’ll give back the money.” He didn’t cry out to God seeking forgiveness or deliverance. He was remorseful, but not repentant. Judas was sorry, but not repentant. So he went away and hanged himself. Satan uses people and then kills them.
Acts 1:18 With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out.
Judas threw the thirty pieces of silver on the floor to the priests who took the money and purchased a cemetery used to bury poor people (Mat 27:5-10). In some way after hanging himself the rope broke, or limb broke, or he was dropped when cut down, whatever, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out.
What good did the betrayal do Judas, and what good did greed do Judas? What good does the greed of betrayal do any of us? Betraying someone is like falling headlong off a cliff, bursting open with our intestines spilling out, especially when the person is Jesus.

Acts 1:25 …Judas by transgression fell, that he might go TO HIS OWN PLACE.
At this moment as we speak, Judas is in his own place in hell burning in the torment of the darkest darkness. What lessons do we learn? Judas is the greatest example of lost opportunity. He stood with the greatest but chose to stand with the damned. Judas did not protect his heart from greed, money, bitterness, and betrayal bringing an eventual filling with the devil and possession by Satan. Judas is the prototype betrayer, but if not cautious, we could all find Judas in us especially when it comes to our betrayal of Jesus. Too often it’s a kiss of betrayal. Beware. It leads to one’s own place in hell.
