Do Whatever He Tells You sermon

Do Whatever He Tells You sermon video audio notes. There is a miracle when you do whatever he tells you. In what area do you need a miracle? Is it your finances? Or, is it your marriage? Maybe it’s your children? Also, it could be your health. Is it a habit or addiction in which you need a miracle? Then do whatever Jesus said to do.

Scriptures: John 14:11-12, Mark 4:30-32, John 2:1-10, Ecclesiastes 9:7, Ephesians 5:18, John 15:11, Romans 14:17

How many believe you have experienced a miracle at some time during your life? Would you show me by raising your hand? Good, because I believe we experience miracles frequently. That’s what our lesson is about. Miracles are happening all around us, but often we are oblivious to them. Not only is God at work in our lives doing the miraculous, but you also have a miraculous ability in you to do miraculous things too.

John 14:11 Believe [it’s interesting that he has to convince us] me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.

John 14:12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

Did Jesus go to the Father? Are you an “anyone?” Was Jesus telling us the truth? If you believe in Jesus then there are miracles in you.

There is a kingdom seed in you. Jesus was explaining the kingdom – how life should be once you are a believer.

Mark 4:30-32

30 Jesus asked, “How can I describe the Kingdom of God? What story should I use to illustrate it?

31 It is like a tiny mustard seed. Though this is one of the smallest of seeds,

32 it grows to become one of the largest of plants, with long branches where birds can come and find shelter.”

I read an article about pea seeds found in the ancient pyramid in Egypt of King Tut. The seeds had lain dormant for 3,000 years. Life seemed to be gone from them. They were dry and lifeless, but when the seed was planted and the rain came, that seed came alive and blossomed making not only pea pods and peas but also beautiful purple blossoms.

Jesus said THERE IS A TINY SEED INSIDE EACH OF US WAITING TO BECOME SOMETHING GREAT! No matter how far from God you have gotten, or how dry your life seems, that seed is in you waiting to grow and do miraculous things for your life just like the miraculous things that Jesus did.

Miracles happen in our lives frequently when we DO WHATEVER JESUS TELLS US. There is a story in the Bible that shows us that. It’s about a wedding that Jesus and His disciples were invited to attend.

John 2:1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there,

John 2:2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.

Isn’t it great when our friends and loved ones invite Jesus and His disciples to their weddings? Let me tell you a little about Jewish weddings in the time of Jesus. After a quiet and serious ceremony at the father of the bride’s house and then a loud singing procession through the town, everyone came to the groom’s house. They went inside the groom’s house, and they ate tons of food and drank lots and lots of wine. Jewish weddings sometimes lasted a whole week, not just one day. The groom, not the bride’s parents, was responsible for making sure that there was enough food and wine for everyone and he paid for everything out of his own pocket.

Plus, the groom had to pay a “bride price” to the bride’s father which was 50 shekels of silver (Ex 22:16). The total cost of a wedding would be even more expensive than today. (That helped make a man only want to be a bridegroom once and that was exactly what the Lord had in mind.)

At this particular wedding in Cana, they ran out of wine. Not only would it have been very embarrassing to the groom and bride, but Jewish law said the man was legally required to provide for his guests. In those days, they couldn’t run over to Alpine or up to Bi-Lo and replenish. In a small town like Cana, it could take days to get more wine. Most likely either the bride or groom was related to Jesus’ family. Seeing Mary’s involvement and concern, it could have even been a younger sister of Jesus. At any rate, Mary told Jesus about the dilemma.

John 2:3-5

3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

4 “Dear woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “DO WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU.”

We are going to look at several points of this miracle, but I want us to see immediately the major point. It is in DOING WHATEVER HE (JESUS) TELLS YOU. THERE IS A MIRACLE IN DOING WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU. In what area do you need a miracle? Is it your finances? Then do whatever Jesus said to do. Is it your marriage? Then do whatever Jesus said to do. His word is full of financial instructions. Is it your children? His word has much to say about the raising of children. Is it your health? Then do what the Word of God says to do. Is it a habit or addiction in which you need a miracle? What does the Bible say to do?

My point is, “THERE IS A MIRACLE IN DOING WHATEVER JESUS TELLS YOU.” The biggest miracles that I have ever experienced in my life came from DOING WHATEVER HE TELLS ME. Mary told those serving at the wedding, “DO WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU” and a miracle happened!

John 2:6-10

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so,

9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside

10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

Jesus turned about 150 gallons of water into about 150 gallons of wine. That’s a lot of wine!

Do Whatever He Tells You sermon video audio notes

Let’s look at a few points about this miracle that we need to apply to our receiving our miracles.

DO WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU.

The entire miracle hinged on Mary’s recognition that a miracle was in doing what Jesus said. If you need a miracle then DO WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU. Friends, you just don’t know the phone calls I get and the sad situations that people experience simply because they refuse to DO WHATEVER HE TELLS THEM. However, people who DO WHATEVER HE TELLS THEM experience a miraculous life. Your miracle is in DOING WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU.

JESUS — USED WHAT WAS AVAILABLE.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR HOUSE? As we saw last time, miracles often begin with something already available – six water jars and water. Your miracle will most likely begin with something that you already have. Within something that you already have is a miracle.

THERE IS A MIRACLE HAPPENING UNDER YOUR NOSE.

It was interesting to me that this miracle happened in the midst and under the noses of all those people, yet few knew a miracle had happened. Jesus didn’t lay hands on the jars filled with water and pray loudly commanding the water to be turned to wine. There was no attention drawn to the miracle. That is exactly how a lot of miracles happen in our lives.

Do Whatever He Tells You sermon video audio notes

My point is that a miracle doesn’t have to have a bunch of sensationalism to be a miracle. For example, how did you meet your spouse? Did the heavens open and a voice boom loudly saying, “Thus saith the Lord… Here is your spouse…” No, but it was a miracle, wasn’t it? (Well, to most of us it was.) It was water being turned into wine. I think about my son Lance and his meeting his wife Jenn. Lance was born in Griffin, GA, and moved to LaFayette, GA. He waited and waited for the right woman. Through many strange circumstances, he met Jenn in Gulfport, Mississippi. Was water turned to wine? Ask them. Two lives miraculously brought together and now my wife and I are pregnant with our third grandchild! It’s a miracle.

Miracles happen all the time. One Sunday I preached on Hanna not being able to conceive, but God miraculously opened her womb and she had Samuel and then other children. Later that same day, a woman who could not conceive and heard that lesson came to my wife and me and asked, “If God did that for Hanna, will he do that for me?” She soon had three children – a boy and two girls. Her first girl is named Hanna. No big hoopla happened, but the water was turned to wine.

I had an emergency phone call at 3 a.m. one morning.

A pregnant woman in our church had gone into labor, but the baby was several months premature. Not much hope was given for the baby’s life. Another complication was that the baby was sideways and needed to turn, but there was no water. The baby miraculously turned in the womb and was born. That baby is now a beautiful healthy Godly young woman. The water turned to wine. Miracles are happening all around.

At this wedding, the groom knew he had not saved the best wine until now, but he didn’t give glory to God. He simply enjoyed the benefits. There are people that God has miraculously helped, but instead of acknowledging God, they give credit to something else. Jesus restores a marriage and people attribute the miracle to good counseling. Jesus heals a physical affliction and people assume it was the medicine. It’s amazing how people can experience a miracle, yet somehow it doesn’t change the course of their lives. I want to tell you that God is at work in your life under your nose and we need to give him thanks. THERE IS A MIRACLE HAPPENING UNDER YOUR NOSE.

GOD IS AN EXTRAVAGANT GIVER.

This miracle was about 150 gallons of water being transformed into about 150 gallons of wine. I don’t know how many people were there and I don’t know how long this party was to last. Nonetheless, that was a lot of wine! It tells me that Jesus wasn’t into just making enough to get by or replace what He and his disciples had drunk. My point is that GOD IS AN EXTRAVAGANT GIVER! He doesn’t want you to just get by. He wants you to live abundantly.

Notice also the quality of the wine.

John 2:9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from…

John 2:10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have SAVED THE BEST TILL NOW.”

Jesus didn’t turn the water into Boon’s Farm. He provided the best wine ever! And He SAVED THE BEST TILL NOW! The point is that if you have invited Jesus into your life, the best is NOW! And the best is always NOW! If you will DO WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU, the best is always NOW.

JESUS CARES ABOUT OUR EVERYDAY NEEDS.

Miracles are not always a 911 situation. This miracle wasn’t what we would call “a necessity.” It was important, but hardly could anyone say that turning water into wine was a dire necessity. No one’s life hung in the balance. No real emergency loomed overhead. My point is that God cares about our everyday lives.

Do Whatever He Tells You sermon video audio notes

GOD CARES ABOUT ALL YOUR NEEDS, NOT ONLY YOUR SPIRITUAL NEEDS.

He cares about embarrassing situations that we get ourselves into. He cares about people enjoying themselves. There is a miracle in our everyday situations.

This was an ordinary wedding with ordinary people. The bride and groom are not named. The groom was not a governor or nobleman and that is the point. You don’t have to be a king or someone “special” to experience your miracle. The miracle did not occur in Rome or even Jerusalem. It occurred in a little city called Cana. This town was so small and insignificant that John had to specify it as “Cana of Galilee.” Can a miracle happen to you in little LaFayette, or Ringgold, or Trion, or Chickamauga, or Summerville, or Rock Spring? OH YES! That’s the point. You are important to God. Our region is important to God. THERE IS A MIRACLE IN YOUR EVERY DAY NEEDS.

CHANGE CEREMONIALISM TO KINGDOM.

John 2:6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing

Judaism taught people to go through a religious washing every time they ate. It was not for sanitary reasons, but rather for religious reasons. It was a “ceremonial washing.” Water would be dipped from the large jars, poured over the hands, and allowed to fall into a separate container or onto the ground. By Jesus using those “religious jars,” He showed us that tasteless, joyless, bland ceremony is transformed into joy and life in the kingdom. Wine in the Bible is symbolic of joy, merriment, and the Spirit.

Do Whatever He Tells You sermon video audio notes

Ecclesiastes 9:7 Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.

Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

Jesus transformed tasteless, dull, ceremonial religion into joy and merriment. Church should be a blast – a party! Let me ask you a question. Did anyone ever accuse Jesus of promoting a tasteless, rigid, emotionless religion? No! That was the problem that His enemies had with him. Jesus offers something entirely different. Jesus brought a kingdom that was full of life and joy and He showed that with His life and says it with His life’s statement.

John 15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that MY JOY might remain in you, and that YOUR JOY MIGHT BE FULL.

Joy is what Paul said the kingdom is.

Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and JOY in the Holy Ghost.

The point is that Jesus is a man of great joy and He desires that His joy remain in us so that we can be full of joy. Jesus transformed all that ceremonial, tasteless, unhappy religion to the wine of gladness. Church should not be dry and dull. THERE IS A MIRACLE AWAITING WHEN YOU ALLOW JESUS TO TRANSFORM TASTELESS AND UNHAPPY RELIGION TO THE WINE OF HIS KINGDOM.

Miracles will happen all around you if you will DO WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU. If you are a believer then you will do what Jesus did and even greater things. There is a seed in you waiting to become something great. If you will DO WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU miracles will happen to you all the time. Something available to you today has a miracle in it. There is a miracle happening under your nose.

Do Whatever He Tells You sermon video audio notes

God is an extravagant giver. Jesus cares about your everyday needs. Change the blandness of religion into the joy of the kingdom. How many are going to EXPECT THE MIRACULOUS? Give the Lord a shout and handclap. Amen!
