Kissing Calves audio sermon notes. Hosea 13:2 “…Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calve” Kissing Calves – So many kiss the images of silver and gold. People are kissing calves of money or things or success or people. The scriptures tell us to kiss the Son Jesus Christ the King. Kissing calves causes family destruction. Things we hold precious vanish away as fog. Like smoke from a chimney, our finances vanish. Our children separate from righteousness as chaff from wheat. Our priorities are so out of order. We are kissing calves – mammon. We perish from the way.

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM – CAN’T SERVE GOD AND MAMMON

Jesus said to seek first the kingdom of God, but often during this time of the year (Christmas), we have a tendency to seek other things first. Jesus also said we cannot serve God and mammon. Mammon is not only money. Mammon is anything personified. It is anything we seek more than we seek him. To what are we kissing up? Are we kissing calves?

Hosea 13:1 When Ephraim spake trembling, he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended in Baal, he died. 2 And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves. 3 Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud and as the early dew that passeth away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney

(TLB) Hosea 13:1 It used to be when Israel spoke, the nations shook with fear, for he was a mighty prince; but he worshiped Baal and sealed his doom. 2 And now the people disobey more and more. They melt their silver to mold into idols, formed with skill by the hands of men. “Sacrifice to these!” they say – men kissing calves! 3 They shall disappear like morning mist, like dew that quickly dries away, like chaff blown by the wind, like a cloud of smoke

HISTORY

Hosea here spoke about what is called the Northern Kingdom. After the death of Solomon, the people of God divided into two kingdoms. The northern kingdom was called Israel. The southern kingdom was called Judah. A man named Jeroboam from the tribe of Ephraim led the rebellion. He took ten tribes and led them into idolatry. Solomon’s son named Rehoboam led the southern kingdom of Judah which continued with temple worship. Ephraim is a reference to Jeroboam and the northern kingdom called Israel.

The Lord put up with the Jeroboam’s rebellion, but when he offended in Baal, he died! Baal is the calf God who is the god of mammon.

Hosea speaks of the demise of the northern kingdom. It was no more. It disappeared as the morning fog. The nation went away like dew on the ground. They were separated as chaffes from the wheat. Israel vanished as smoke out of the chimney. In 721 BC they were utterly and totally destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar. The reason for their destruction was their worship of Baal.

They were kissing calves and what did it get them? They were removed from God’s purposes.

QUESTIONS:

WHAT IS OUR NATION KISSING? WHAT ARE WE LOVING THE MOST?  Are we kissing calves?

TAKING THIS A LITTLE FURTHER, WHAT DO MANY PEOPLE IN THE CHURCH KISS?  Are we kissing calves?

SCRIPTURAL KISSES – WHAT AM I KISSING?

The northern kingdom gave their kiss to the calf. Let us quickly study a few scriptures speaking of the kiss. There are many so we will limit ourselves. Let’s see if we can find what we are kissing

FIRST USE

THE COME NEAR KISS

Genesis 27:24 And he said, Art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am…. 26 And his father Isaac said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son. 27 And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed

kiss – nashaq

to kiss lit. or fig. (touch); also (as a mode of attachment), to equip with weapons

The first kiss (first use) the scriptures speak of is the kiss of Jacob when he was disguised as Esau. Jacob wanted to be blessed by Isaac so Jacob disguised himself as someone he was not.

Isaac said Come near… Isaac thought he discerned (smelled) Esau, but Isaac was deceived. A kiss will activate the senses or the sensations of the body. However, we see we cannot trust our senses during a kiss.

For a person to give us this kiss means they have come near. We have allowed, no, invited them into our lives. We trusted the kiss only to discover later they were not who they said they were.

There are times when we become close to people. We invite them to Come Near only to find their kiss was a kiss of hypocrisy. They were masked and disguised as something they were not. If we have very many years under our belts, we know this is true. People will pretend to be something in an attempt to come near. Their kiss is a kiss of deceit.

We see the first kiss in the Bible was not a good kiss. Beware of the kiss. Do not trust your discernment during the kiss. Let’s look at one more of the kiss of deceit.

Kiss of submission – Samuel kissed Saul

1SA 10:1 Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

Though Saul was a terrible king (president) Samuel submitted anyway because the Lord hath appointed thee to be captain over his inheritance. When Saul did wrong, Samuel was the first to tell him, but still, Samuel submitted to the Lord’s appointment.

Kiss given a spoiled child – David kissed Absalom

2SA 14:33 So Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.

Absalom was David’s son. Absalom had killed one of his half-brothers named Ammon because Ammon had raped Absalom’s sister. David did not punish Absalom according to the law. He kissed Absalom. Later Absalom will try to kill David and take David’s kingdom.

We kiss our children when we need to punish them. If we do we will pay later and Joab will kill Absalom.  Are we kissing calves?

Kiss of the family traitor – Absalom kissed David’s people

2SA 15:5 And it was so, that when any man came nigh to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him. 6 And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

Absalom was not punished as he should have been. Absalom then begins to undermine David’s authority. He played the people against David.

Children will undermine the authority of their parents if not properly punished. They will play Dad against Mom. They will play teacher against parent.

Kiss of Righteousness and Peace

Psalms 85:10 Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

When we properly blend mercy and truth we will watch righteousness and peace kiss. Mercy must be balanced with truth.  Are we kissing calves?

Kiss of the adulteress

Proverbs 7:13 So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,

We don’t need to say much here. It says she caught him. He chased her until she caught him.  Are we kissing calves?

Kiss of a correct lover

Song of Solomon 1:2 Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.

This is the way the kiss of the spouse should be – better than wine. Wine intoxicates. Wine makes happy, and wine makes the body numb to life.  Are we kissing calves?

Kiss of the honest answer

Proverbs 24:26 An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.

Sometimes the honest answer feels like a slap on the face. In reality, it is loving and caring and sweet like a kiss on the lips. Are we kissing calves?

Kiss of an enemy

Proverbs 27:6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

It always bothers me when someone I know who does not like me begins to kiss up to me. Beware for there is deceit brewing. Are we kissing calves?

Kiss of Judas

Luke 22:47 And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. 48 But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?

This is the kiss of betrayal. People will kiss up to us, only to betray us later. Are we kissing calves?

Be on guard when we are kissed

(NIV) 2SA 20:9 Joab said to Amasa, “How are you, my brother?” Then Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him. 10 Amasa was not on his guard against the dagger in Joab’s hand, and Joab plunged it into his belly, and his intestines spilled out on the ground. Without being stabbed again, Amasa died

Have you ever felt like someone very close to you took a dagger and split you open? Have you ever felt as though your insides were spilled out? Yelp we all have at some point. This can only happen by someone we invited to come near. We did not see the dagger coming. All we knew was that suddenly our guts were on the ground

WHAT IS THE MOTIVATION OF OUR KISS

There are all types of kisses. Perhaps a better way of saying it is there are all kinds of motivations to kiss or be kissed. It is a tool and sign to show reverence and love or a tool of deceit. The bottom line is we all kiss something. What is the motivation for our kiss?  Are we kissing calves?

KISS OF COVENANT FRIENDSHIP

I need to balance the previous kiss of betrayal with the kiss of true friendship and covenant. True meaningful friends are few and far between. It would be possible for a person to go through their entire life and never experience a “true friend.” This is because a true friend will lay down his life for a friend and we are very picky as to whom we will lay down our lives. Laying down our lives does not necessarily mean dying for someone else. It could, but this is not the thought. The thought is to drop what is important (very important) to me and go to the immediate aid of my friend. This must be the case no matter what time of day or night or expense. My life stops (lay down) to assist my friend with his life.

We see this type of kiss with Jonathan and David.

1 Samuel 20:41 And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded. 42 And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city

This type of friendship often transcends great friendships between two people. It enters the relationship of the children for ever. We can many times determine the depth of our relationship with a person by the relationship our children have with their children. Also, as in the case of David and Jonathan, we will take our friends’ children and raise them as our own (2Sa 9:6-13; Mephibosheth).

The kiss of a true covenant friend will never cut or stab. It will protect and heal. It is a kiss for good times and a kiss for bad times, and it has weathered the test of time and circumstances. Also, it will never run and never condemn. It is the kiss of a covenant friendship

Family kiss

There are many scriptures mentioning the kiss of family relationship. Laban kissed his daughters and grandchildren (Gen 31:55). Esau kissed Jacob on his neck (Gen 33:4). Joseph kissed Benjamin and his brothers (Gen 45:14-15). Israel (Jacob) kissed his sons before he died (Gen 48:10). Joseph kissed his dead father (Gen 50:1). Aaron kissed Moses (Exo 4:27). Elisha kissed his parents before he went into ministry under Elijah (1Ki 19:20). Ruth and Orpah kissed their mother-in-law Naomi (Rth 1:9, 14).

The scriptures teach families should kiss one another. This is looked upon as weird in our society. Our society has come to a place where the kiss means something sensual. Society has become perverted and sensually oriented, but this should not terminate a family’s pure affection for one another. I kiss my dad. My son never leaves my home without kissing me and his mom. My children will also kiss their grandfather hello and goodbye, and my daughter will kiss me when she arrives at my home and often when she leaves. Biblically it is a sign of a healthy loving family who enjoys seeing one another.

One of the greatest stories of a healthy family is the story of the Prodigal.

Luke 15:20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him

In our natural families, we are elated when a wayward runaway child decides to come home and correct their life. So is it in the spiritual family. When a person comes home to our body we should greet them with a holy kiss (hug).

CONCLUSION

DO WE KISS CALVES OR KISS THE SON

Hosea 13:2 And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves

KISS THE SON

Psalms 2:12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him

Which are we kissing? So many kiss the images of silver and gold. People kiss the calves, the idols, of money or things or success or even people. The scriptures tell us to kiss the Son. The Son is of course Jesus Christ the King. Our families are destroyed. Things we hold precious vanish away as fog. Like smoke from a chimney, our finances vanish. Our children separate from righteousness and holiness as chaff from wheat. Our priorities are so out of order. We kiss calves – mammon. We perish from the way when kissing calves.

So what do we do? It is one thing to point out the problem. What do we do to correct the problem? We begin to kiss the Son. We seek first the kingdom, and we put our trust in the Son. He will restore the years the palmer worm and canker worm have taken. We seek first the kingdom. He adds the things (Mat 6:33)

THE SINFUL WOMAN KISSED JESUS

Luke 7:38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment

kissed – 2705 kataphileo {kat-af-ee-leh’-o}}

(1) to kiss much, kiss again and again, kiss tender

Luke 7:45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet

Kissing Calves audio sermon notes

How do we kiss the Son today?

First, there is the reverence we must give Jesus Christ the Son as the King. But to kiss him today would be to kissing the body of Christ – the church

1 Corinthians 12:27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

Surely this is the point of the apostles as they instruct (not suggest) that we greet one another with a holy kiss.

Romans 16:16 Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches of Christ salute you.

1 Corinthians 16:20 All the brethren greet you. Greet ye one another with an holy kiss.

2 Corinthians 13:12 Greet one another with an holy kiss.

1 Thessalonians 5:26 Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.

1 Peter 5:14 Greet one another with a kiss of love…

A sign of a healthy church is one who will kiss the Son and refrain from kissing calves. Today for safety’s sake we have replaced the kiss with the hug. This is safer and conveys the same message. I do not want just any man kissing on my wife’s neck. The principle is a healthy church family will display their love (1Pe 5:14). Love in a natural family should be obvious. Love in a church family should be obvious also.

How can we kiss the Son today? We best kiss his body the church. The admonition would be if we refuse to kiss the church we are refusing to kiss the Son.

DON’T LET THE SEASON — USE YOU TO KISS THE CALF. FOCUS AND SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM. KISS THE SON. DO NOT BE KISSING CALVES.
