Witnessing Voice Of God: How to Discern Spirit from Soul

Witnessing Voice Of God: How to Discern Spirit from Soul. Many Christians struggle to know if what they hear is truly God’s voice or just their own thoughts and feelings. Scripture teaches that the Spirit of God communicates directly with our spirit, not our mind or emotions. Only the living Word of God can reliably distinguish between spirit and soul. By immersing ourselves in God’s Word, we gain clarity.   We need a witness to follow His true leading in our lives.

Scriptures in this message:

Romans 8:14-18, Hebrews 4:12, 2 Timothy 3:14-17, James 1:21,

Guided by the Spirit

Romans 8:14-18

14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of
adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”
16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

The passage focuses on the idea that believers are led by the Spirit of God, as described in Romans 8:14-16. It emphasizes that those who are children of God are guided through life by the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice and they follow me,” highlighting the importance of following God’s guidance. The Spirit does not lead us into fear but into a relationship of adoption, where we can call God our Father.

A clarification is made about the words “Abba” and “Father.” Contrary to the common teaching that “Abba” means “Daddy,” the passage explains that “Abba” is a Chaldean word used by Jews, whereas “Father” is a Greek word associated with Gentiles. This shows that, regardless of background—Jew or Gentile—the same Spirit brings everyone into a relationship with God as Father.

The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are God’s children. This witness does not occur in our minds, emotions, or senses, but in our innermost being—our spirit. God communicates directly with our spirit, and often what He says may not make sense to our intellect or emotions. The passage emphasizes that being led by the Spirit involves listening to that inner witness, rather than relying on external signs or voices.

As children of God, believers may experience suffering, which can serve to purify or correct them. However, the rewards and crowns believers receive in the afterlife are dependent on how they live now, not as a means to earn salvation, but as a response to it. The abundant life promised by Jesus is closely tied to our willingness and ability to be led by the Spirit, allowing His Spirit to bear witness with our own.

Discerning Spirit’s Voice Over the Soul

Galatians chapter 5 teaches that as believers, the Spirit leads us, we walk in the Spirit, and we produce the fruit of the Spirit. Once we become sons of God, our dependence shifts to hearing His voice within our spirit, which is a deeper experience than simply relying on our mind or natural senses. Although it may seem that what we perceive with our physical senses is more real, the truth is that the spiritual reality is even greater. When our spirit bears witness with God’s Spirit, we are truly being led by Him, and this is how He guides us through life.

However, a common problem arises: how do we know if we are truly hearing the Lord or His Spirit? Many Christians struggle with this because they often mix what they sense in their spirit with their natural instincts, intellect, emotions, or desires. The real issue is the soul, which tends to want things its own way, seeks to please the flesh, and often opposes what the Spirit is saying. The soul and the spirit are in constant conflict, making it difficult to discern the true leading of the Spirit.

Witnessing Voice Of God: How to Discern Spirit from Soul

To be led by the Spirit, it is essential to seek a witness—a confirmation that what we are hearing is truly from God. The Spirit bears witness with our spirit, but the soul can confuse or cloud this process. The only way to clearly distinguish between what is coming from the spirit and what is coming from the soul is to get a witness from the Word of God. Hebrews points to this as the one reliable way to divide and discern what we are truly hearing, ensuring that we are following the Spirit and not being misled by our own soul.

Only God’s Word Divides Soul, Spirit

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

During my studies for my theology degree, I referenced Hebrews 4:12 in a test, claiming that only the Word of God can divide between the soul and the spirit. Their instructor challenged this, pointing out that the verse doesn’t explicitly say it is the only thing that can do so. However, I maintain that, based on their understanding, the Word of God is the only means I know of that can distinguish between what is from the soul and what is from the spirit.

I use the analogy of a real corn seed versus an artificial one. While both may look identical, only the real, living seed can produce a harvest. Similarly, books and teachings about the Bible may provide insights, but only the living, God-breathed Word itself can produce spiritual fruit in a person’s life. This living quality is emphasized as the first key characteristic of the Word of God.

The passage in Hebrews attributes other qualities to the Word: it is powerful (active), always at work, and never returns void. The Word is also described as sharp, sharper than any two-edged sword, constantly cutting and piercing. These qualities enable the Word to penetrate deeply and discern the innermost thoughts and intentions, which can be uncomfortable or convicting to hear.

The ultimate function of the Word is its ability to divide soul and spirit. This distinction is crucial for believers who want to discern whether what they are hearing is from God’s Spirit or merely from their own soul. Without knowledge of the Word, there is no reliable way to make this distinction; one would be left guessing.

While one may commit to Christ and be chosen by God, the transformation of the soul—particularly the mind and thoughts—is a continual process that requires the ongoing work of the Word. The Word of God, therefore, not only distinguishes between soul and spirit but also actively works to renew and save the soul, helping believers understand God’s will and voice in their lives.

Scripture’s Power: Teaching, Correction, Equipping

2 Timothy 3:14-17

14 You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from
whom you have learned them,
15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom
that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in
righteousness;
17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

The passage emphasizes the transformative and saving power of God’s word. Paul encourages Timothy to continue his commitment to the teachings and sacred writings learned from childhood, noting that the scriptures—referred to as the “holy scriptures” in the King James Version—provide wisdom necessary for making decisions and navigating life.

It is stressed that the scriptures not only impart wisdom but also lead to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. The word of God is described as “God-breathed” or inspired, making it uniquely authoritative and powerful. Its purpose includes teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness, all of which are essential for personal growth and right living.

Applying the word of God yields profound changes, transforming individuals, families, finances, workplaces, and every aspect of life. This transformation is not automatic, but instead comes from spending time with God and immersing oneself in His Word. The ultimate goal is that believers—both men and women—become adequate and equipped for every good work, able to discern right from wrong and make wise decisions in all areas of life.

Let God’s Word Take Root

James 1:21

Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.

James 1:21 urges believers to put aside all filthiness and wickedness, and instead, with humility, receive the word that is implanted in them. The King James Version uses the word “engrafted,” which carries the same meaning—getting the word deeply rooted in your heart. The emphasis is on making sure the word of God is not just heard, but truly planted within you.

This idea connects to Jesus’ teaching about the sower who sows the seed. Believers are encouraged to be good soil, allowing the word of God to take root and grow, which will ultimately bring forth a spiritual harvest. The key is to receive and plant the word in your life actively.

The passage highlights that the implanted word is able to save your soul. God’s word transforms your thinking and brings salvation. It is through the word that your soul is renewed and changed.

The word of God helps you discern whether you are hearing from your soul or from the Spirit. It has the power to divide and reveal what is truly from God and what is not, guiding you in spiritual understanding.

Examples of Listening

We were at a seminar not very long ago. A minister—if I were to mention his name, most of you would know him—went out to eat with us. His ministry has grown tremendously, and he truly feels that the Lord is calling him to undertake other works. But he wants to stay connected to the ministry he’s currently a part of. He feels there’s a covenant; God has blessed him since he’s been there. He’s paid the price, he’s fought alongside them, and he feels like a part of them. But now he wants to move forward with what God is showing him and branch out into a more in-depth personal ministry.

He shared all this with us over a meal. My initial reaction, honestly, was to think, “Sir, you’re just in rebellion.” That’s what I began to hear in my heart: “You want to take what God has blessed you with and make your own wealth. You’re in rebellion, and you’re coming against the man of God who leads the ministry you’re submitted to.” I didn’t say that. I knew it wouldn’t be received. So I just stayed quiet and listened.

Witnessing Voice Of God: How to Discern Spirit from Soul

On the way back to the seminar, I got quiet because I wanted to minister to him. I really wanted to share something, but I didn’t have a witness in my spirit, so I just listened to the Spirit. I prayed, “Lord, I’d like to minister here. Would you give me something to share with this man of God?” As I listened, the Lord began to minister to me about Caleb and Joshua—how Caleb had been faithful for years, serving Joshua, fighting alongside him, and driving out the enemies.

Then, finally, a day came when Caleb said to Joshua, “Give me my mountain. I’ve served you, I’m faithful to you, I’ll go to battle with you any time, but give me my mountain. I want what’s mine.” I knew that was God, because it was utterly contrary to what I was hearing in my soul—it was the Word of God.

So I shared that with him as we sat in the car. He said, “That’s it. That’s it. I have been waiting. I didn’t want to be in rebellion. I’ve been blessed in this ministry; I’ve prospered here, and I didn’t want to rebel against it. But I needed to know if it was God leading me.” He said, “That confirms it. That bears witness with my spirit. I know now it’s the Word of God.”

I do a lot of marital counseling. When I counsel couples, I find that our conversations almost always center around the basics: thoughts, communication, finances, and sex. These are the foundational issues that repeatedly arise in marital counseling.

Witnessing Voice Of God: How to Discern Spirit from Soul

When I sit down with a couple, I make it my priority to share the Word of God with them. I don’t tell them what I think. Instead, I draw on what I call the witnessing voice of God. My focus is always, “What does God say?” That way, I know the counsel I’m giving is proper. I avoid sharing my own opinions, and I don’t say, “Well, I think…” because I know that’s not what they’re looking for. What couples want to know is: What is right, what is wrong, and what do I need to do? They’re serious about finding answers, and I take that seriously.

The voice of God that I try to share in counseling is the same voice that leads me through my own life. I listen for God’s direction. Sometimes I sense Him telling me to branch out, to do something different. It might be to go somewhere new, or to take a specific action.

I believe God speaks to me, but I also lean on the men and women of God around me. I listen to them, too, and what I want from them is the witnessing voice of God. What I mean is I don’t want to hear, “I think…” I want them to give me scripture, to tell me what I need to do, to point me to the Word of God when I seek counsel.

Witnessing Voice Of God: How to Discern Spirit from Soul

What I’m trying to share with you is this: whenever you receive counsel—whether it’s at the supper table, riding in a car, or a formal meeting—don’t just listen for someone’s opinion. Listen for what the Word of God says. Your spirit will bear witness with His Spirit. You might ask, “How do I know if it’s the Spirit?” The answer is that the Spirit will lead you through life, just as He leads me.

Close with this Thought

Imagine walking up to a house surrounded by a tall fence. On the gate, there’s a large sign in bold red letters: “Beware of Dog.” That sign speaks to you before you ever set foot on the property. It grabs your attention and makes you pause. You wouldn’t just stroll in without looking around first—you’d take a careful look, wouldn’t you? That sign is a warning, a voice that demands you stop and consider what’s ahead.

Witnessing Voice Of God: How to Discern Spirit from Soul

In life, God often gives us similar warnings—a witnessing voice that says, “Beware.” Sometimes, as you go about your day, you’ll sense a sudden caution: “Stop. Watch out.” That’s God’s way of alerting you to danger. The Bible tells us there’s an adversary out there, prowling like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. There’s a real threat, not just an empty warning. Some may try to downplay the enemy, calling him a “gumless bully,” but that’s easy to say until you’re the one under attack. The truth is, many believers have been wounded by the enemy, not gummed, but bitten. The Bible never says he’s harmless; it says Don’t give him a place in your life.

So, when you feel that inner warning, don’t ignore it. Sometimes it’s God purifying you, prompting you to deal with something in your life. Other times, it’s a clear sign to stop and listen, to not give the enemy any ground. Remember, God’s voice is always faithful to warn us. Listen when He says, “Beware.”

Prayer and Commitment

With heads bowed, you may say today, I want to be honest, Pastor. I confess that I have not spent the time I should in God’s Word. There are moments when I struggle to discern whether it’s God speaking to me or just my own thoughts. I genuinely want to know the difference, because Scripture shows me that God is always speaking to His people, and as one of Christ’s sheep, I am meant to follow His voice. He desires to talk with me, but I don’t always recognize when it’s Him.

Today, I realize more than ever how vital it is to know God’s Word deeply if I want to experience the abundant life He promises. I admit this before you, before the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and our Father in Heaven. I raise my hand as a sign of this confession. If this resonates with you, I invite you to raise your hand as well.

Many of us find ourselves in this situation. Some may have enough of the Word in them to avoid certain mistakes, but for most of us, this is a real need. This message is as real as it gets: to honestly know when the Spirit is speaking, we must know the Word of God.

Witnessing Voice Of God: How to Discern Spirit from Soul

So, I want to pray for all of us—especially those who raised their hands, including myself—that God will help us devote more time to His Word. Let’s set aside our distractions and remember that God wants to guide us, speak to us, and lead us into a life of abundance if we let Him walk with us. Amen.
