Something may have you down physically, but you can get up inside. You may work with people who constantly attempt to put you down. We begin a new series today – WITHIN YOURSELF. We are going to talk about Having the Right Image Inside, Listening to the Warning Inside, and Improving Your Self-Image. But today, I want to talk about GETTING UP ON THE INSIDE.
We all face challenges in life and we all have things that come against us. However, we may get knocked down on the outside, but the key to living in victory is GETTING UP ON THE INSIDE. AS LONG AS YOU CAN GET UP ON THE INSIDE, YOU WILL OVERCOME EVERY OBSTACLE YOU EVER FACE.
People give up too easily. When things don’t go their way, they get upset and bent out of shape. They get down, discouraged, and often, give up. God never promised us that everything would always be easy. The people who are going to have successful fulfilling lives are the people with a “made-up mind” – determined people.
Sometimes, when we struggle in an area for a long time, it’s easy to accept failure. People say, “I’ve always had this sickness. I will never get well.” “My marriage has been doomed from the beginning. See, I knew it wouldn’t work out.” “I’ve been through too much in life. I will never be successful.” No. You must be more determined. Don’t settle for a weak, spineless attitude. Have an Overcomer attitude. An Overcomer is a warrior and fighter. A warrior knows how to endure hardships. When times get tough, an overcomer doesn’t run and hide and get bent out of shape. An overcomer digs in and braces for the battle. Our attitude should be, “I’m going to live in victory. I’m determined I’m going to be healthy.” We need to say on the inside, “I’m determined I’m going to have a good marriage.” “I’m determined to be successful.”
I heard a story about a little boy.
He was in church with his mother and he would not sit still. He kept standing up in the pew. His mom kept saying sit down. He would sit down for a few minutes and get back up again. She said again, “I said sit down.” This happened several times. The little boy stood up and would not sit down. His mother, aggravated, put her hand on the top of his head and pushed him down. The little boy sat fuming. He looked at his mom and said, “I may be sitting down on the outside, but I’m standing up on the inside.”
That’s what we need to do in life. Life’s circumstances may cause you to sit down on the outside. You may have gotten a bad report from the doctor. Maybe, you lost your biggest client at work. Maybe, your child got in trouble. You faced a setback. Life pushed you down. Say what that little boy said, “I might be down on the outside, but I’m standing up on the inside.” Have an overcomer attitude. Stay in an attitude of faith – “I’m going to do what I am supposed to do serving God and he will fix this for me.” Stay in victory. Don’t go around negative and bent out of shape. Don’t go into a pity party. Certainly, don’t blame God. Set your direction for victory. Say, “God, I don’t understand this, but I know you do and you are in control.
You said all things would work together for my good. So, Father, I know you will bring me through on top.” No matter what you face outside, if you can get up on the inside, you cannot be defeated.
Ephesians 6:13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that WHEN THE DAY of evil comes, you may be able to STAND your ground, and after you have done everything, to STAND.
Paul said it may not look good on the outside, but if you keep standing, you will get the victory. You may be facing something right now. You’ve done everything you know to do. You’ve prayed, believed, and stood on God’s word, but it doesn’t look like anything is happening. You are tempted to give up. You may think, “It’s never going to change.” God says to keep on standing, keep on hoping, keep on walking knowing God will work you through this.
Hebrews 10:35-36 So DO NOT THROW AWAY YOUR CONFIDENCE; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.
Don’t throw away your confidence in God. It’s up to us to hold onto confidence or give up. Too many people give up when it’s time to persevere, dig in, and stand. If you will, you will receive what you want. Stand up on the inside.
A great thing is you can be flat on your back in the hospital and be standing up on the inside. Something may have you down physically, but you can get up inside. You may work with people who constantly attempt to put you down. As long as you don’t get down on the inside you will overcome and get your reward. Don’t allow situations to take your joy and make you depressed. Keep standing up on the inside. Be a warrior, not a whiner.
2 Corinthians 2:14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh MANIFEST THE SAVOUR OF HIS KNOWLEDGE BY US IN EVERY PLACE.
When we triumph, we make the smell of God’s knowledge. We can come out of EVERY situation smelling good. Failure stinks, but victory is a sweet smell. I like the smell of victory. The enemy might hit you with his best shot, but if you can get up on the inside, his best is never enough. When the smoke clears and the dust settles, you will be the one smelling good if you get up on the inside.
Once when David and his men were away from their home camp, the enemy attacked their families.
1 Samuel 30:3-4 When David and his men came to Ziklag, they found it destroyed by fire and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive. So David and his men WEPT ALOUD UNTIL THEY HAD NO STRENGTH LEFT TO WEEP.
Have you ever been in a position so bad that you wept until you could not weep anymore? Something knocked you down. They blamed David and his closest friends began to turn on him. That will knock you down. David stressed out.
1 Samuel 30:6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: BUT DAVID ENCOURAGED HIMSELF IN THE LORD HIS GOD.
As David sat there looking at the smoke rise, feeling everything precious to him and to those he cared about, was lost, even his closest friends came against him. DOWN ON THE OUTSIDE, HE MADE A DECISION ON THE INSIDE. David’s overcoming warrior spirit stood up. Instead of sitting around depressed, DAVID ENCOURAGED HIMSELF IN THE LORD HIS GOD. Then, it wasn’t long before he stood up on the outside. He was able, then, to get his men up too, and away they went after the enemy, supernaturally recovering all taken from them. He recovered all taken from his men and all taken from the surrounding area. Instead of David being a rat, he was a hero. David could never have recovered all had he not gotten up on the inside.
Some of you are down and weeping about your situation. You are waiting for God to fix everything for you. No. God is waiting for you to get up on the inside. He will work supernaturally for you. You will be the hero smelling good, and not the rat. You may be like David sitting around in a pity party weeping. You’re angry and thinking about how unfair life is. It’s up to you. If you get up on the inside, you will get up on the outside and you will get your victory.
Paul and Silas were in the city of Thyatira, doing God’s will, and trying to help people. Paul cast a demon out of a girl, which upset the enemy. Then Paul and Silas were arrested, beaten, thrown in the inner prison, and their feet placed into stocks. They didn’t have a pity party. They didn’t blame God, or get depressed?
Acts 16:25-26 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And SUDDENLY THERE WAS A GREAT EARTHQUAKE, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.
In the midst of that mess, injustice, and their darkest hour, they got up on the inside. I HAVE LEARNED THAT WHEN YOU GIVE GOD PRAISE IN THE MIDST OF THE DARKEST TIMES, YOU ACTIVATE GOD’S SUPERNATURAL MIRACLE-WORKING POWER. SUDDENLY, God sends a great earthquake. The thing holding you shakes. Doors open. God frees everyone around you. Things suddenly happen when you stand up on the inside.
Several years ago, I went through a very difficult and humiliating time. It was one of those times when you were embarrassed and didn’t want to see or talk to anyone. I was knocked down on the outside but made myself stay up on the inside. I praised God in that midnight hour. So, I can tell you from experience that SUDDENLY God’s supernatural power was released and a wonderful earthquake came. Within 20 minutes God released everything, paying off our entire facility and doing other amazing things.
I know some of you have been battling the same things for years. Some battle marital problems. It seems you are in stocks. I know some of you battle with finances. Some battle with your children. It seems it’s been this way forever and seems it will never end. Once, Jesus met a man lying on a cot suffering as an invalid for thirty-eight years, a generation! Jesus asked the man a seemingly silly question.
John 5:5-6 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that HE HAD BEEN IN THIS CONDITION FOR A LONG TIME, he asked him, “DO YOU WANT TO GET WELL?”
Some people allow things to make them invalids that shouldn’t. Do they really want to get well? Some people don’t. They want to stay in their pity party. The man gave Jesus excuses why he couldn’t get well. “I wasn’t treated fairly.” “It’s his/her fault.” “I don’t have enough education.” “I came from the wrong side of the tracks.” No. Those are excuses. You can lay on your mat or get yourself up.
John 5:8-9 Then Jesus said to him, “GET UP! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.
Your attitude must be, “I’m coming out of this thing I don’t care how long it’s been. It’s had me down for years, but today is my day to GET UP!” God sees your determination. Do what you can do then God will do what you can’t do.
Psalms 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit WITHIN ME.
(Amplified Bible) Psalms 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a RIGHT, PERSEVERING, AND STEADFAST SPIRIT WITHIN ME.
When your spirit is not right, you are a sitting duck for the enemy. He will torment you and eventually destroy you. However, when your spirit is right within you, it’s persevering and steadfast. Say, “God help me to get rid of this negative, self-pity attitude.” People who constantly fail in life have a negative, self-pity attitude. People who succeed in life have a persevering and steadfast attitude.
The only thing keeping some of you from going to the next level of life is your attitude. Stand up on the inside. Life may not have treated you fair. You may have a thousand good reasons to feel sorry for yourself, but be like David. Encourage yourself and get up on the inside. Don’t throw away your confidence. Smell like God and be triumphant. It might be midnight and a dark time for you. You may be all bound up, but if you get up on the inside, God will send an earthquake to set you free. Do you want to get well? Then GET UP ON THE INSIDE. KEEP A RIGHT SPIRIT AND YOU WILL ENJOY A RIGHT LIFE. God has placed His Spirit and his power within you.
Don’t be a sitting duck for the enemy. You don’t need to go another day, much less thirty-eight years, on your mat. GET UP ON THE INSIDE AND YOU WILL BE ABLE TO GET UP ON THE OUTSIDE.
