We are in a series titled POSSESSING THE KINGDOM. As we have seen, there is a kingdom available today and the children of God have been given access. Most people do not think of it this way, but the kingdom was the passion of Jesus Christ. We know this because Jesus preached the message of the kingdom every place he went.
Matthew 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
(NIV) Matthew 4:23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.
The kingdom is good news. It’s not bad news about a great tribulation. The kingdom is a place of healing. It’s a place where all the needs of God’s children are met – spiritual, emotional, and physical. It’s the place of abundance Jesus made available for us.
The purpose of the church is to advance the kingdom.
Matthew 16:18 …I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
The church is to come against anything attempting to block the kingdom’s advancement. In the days of Jesus, the religious system ran by the Pharisees and Sadducees stood in the way of the kingdom and attempted to stop it from advancing. They inaccurately taught the kingdom and used it to abuse and condemn people. Jesus told those abusers the kingdom would be taken from them and given to a different group of people.
Matthew 21:43 “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.
We see several things in this verse. (1) There was a kingdom in those days and there is a kingdom now. (2) The Jewish nation does not have a special “inroad” to the kingdom other people do not have. (3) The church has been given the kingdom and is expected to produce the fruit of it. In other words, the church is to advance the kingdom.
Matthew 11:12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
The children of Israel came to the gate of the kingdom of darkness they were to possess. They were to force their way in and conquer. They were to change the dark kingdom into the kingdom of God. The gate was called the Jordan River. Beyond this river awaited everything they wanted and dreamed about. This one river was all standing between them and everything they wanted.
Do you know there is only one river keeping any of us from POSSESSING THE KINGDOM? I have been thinking about this Jordan River principle and seeking the Lord as to how to teach it. Finally Thursday I felt I had seen something to tell you.
What does the Jordan River represent to you and me? If the book of Joshua is a lesson on our POSSESSING THE KINGDOM then we need to grasp how the Jordan applies to us. What must each one of us pass through before we can begin experiencing the abundant life? The Jordan is obviously an obstacle, but what else? What is it standing between each of us and our abundance? Another point here is how do I know if I have even crossed the Jordan and I am in the Promised Land? Let me show you what I see.
In John chapter 3 Jesus had a conversation with a man named Nicodemus.
John 3:3 In reply Jesus declared, I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.
The reason for being born again is to see the kingdom. The children of Israel could see it, but not enter it until they went through the Jordan.
John 3:5 Jesus answered, I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.
To enter the kingdom they must be born of the water and the Spirit. Jesus went on to ask Nicodemus why he didn’t understand this (Joh 3:10). This is something we need to understand.
The Bible associates the scriptures (Word of God) and the Spirit with a river. Jesus shouted this one day.
John 7:37-39
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried[krazo {krad’-zo} speak with a loud voice], saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive…)
The Holy Spirit is a river the believer must experience through the word. Speaking of the church Paul said,
Ephesians 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
My point is if we are truly going to enter our Promised Land and POSSESS THE KINGDOM, we must go through the Word of God and go through the things of the Spirit. Without going through these we cannot enter.
The Jordan River was at flood stage when the children of Israel were told to cross (3:15). Have you ever seen a flooding river? A peaceful river becomes a raging surge.
When a believer decides to “go through” and read the scriptures, it is like a flooding river. It’s overwhelming. People say something like, “I can’t go through this. It is too much. I will drown. It’s too deep for me.” It’s the same way with spiritual things. Things of the Spirit seem so overwhelming and frightening. We say things like, “I don’t know how to pray. I can’t minister to this person. I can’t give a word of prophecy. Tongues? That’s frightening!” How many remember feeling like this when someone told you how you needed to read the Bible or move in the gifts of the Spirit?
Be this as it may, each of us knows we will never truly enter what God has for us unless we “go through” the word and “go through” the Spirit. We can spiritually see the Promised Land just on the other side of the river, but the river is at flood stage. Many turn around and go back into the wilderness rather than jump in and go through the word and the spirit.
I want to encourage you today.
You need to get into the Word. You can call it what you will, but you need to get in the Holy Spirit. Call it baptized in the Holy Ghost with evidence of speaking in tongues, whatever. If you will go through God’s Word and Spirit, no walled city will stop your advancing. For one thing, no battle will defeat you. Paul tells us about this warfare.
Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
If you are going through marital difficulties then you need to go through the word and the spirit to defeat it. If you are sick in your body, then you need to go through the word and the spirit to conquer it. Your life will forever change once you go through the Word and go through the things of the Spirit.
My title today is GET YOUR FEET WET. I take it from Joshua 3:8.
Joshua 3:8 Tell the priests who carry the ark of the covenant: When you reach the edge of the Jordan’s waters, go and stand in the river.
My point is simple. To begin supernatural things happening in your life and living the victorious life you desire, you must GET YOUR FEET WET. By all means you must stand in the Word and in the Spirit.
I want to encourage you. Don’t be afraid of the Word or the Spirit. I know it looks overwhelming and frightening, but God will do a supernatural thing for you. It will change your life forever. The Word will equip you and the Spirit will empower you to POSSESS THE KINGDOM.
Let’s talk about GETTING OUR FEET WET. The first thing we need to do is watch for God moving.
Joshua 3:3 And they commanded the people, saying, WHEN ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, AND the priests the Levites bearing it, THEN ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.
Notice it was when they saw the ark AND those carrying it moving they were to move. The ark of the covenant is mentioned seventeen times in Joshua chapters three and four. The ark was a special piece of furniture placed in the very back of the Tabernacle where no one could see it. It represented the presence of God. However, on the day they crossed the Jordan, the ark was not hidden in the back of the tabernacle. It was out in full view being carried.
If we want to go through Jordan – Spirit and Word – we need to be around and watch people in whom God is not hidden. By all means, these display his presence in a way everyone can see. That is to say, there is no doubt they carry the very presence of God in their lives.
Jesus said a very interesting thing in John 15:19-20.
John 5:19 …”I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.
John 5:20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these.
Jesus watched God move and then he moved. Did Jesus literally “see” God doing something, or was this a metaphor? I’ll show you a secret. Jesus watched people to see what God was doing. One day Jesus was teaching, but he noted Father God wanted to do something else.
Luke 5:17 And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching… and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
How did Jesus know the Lord was present to heal? He watched the people and looked at their faith. On this occasion, some men brought a man with the palsy on a gurney. They tore a hole in the roof where Jesus was so they could get the sick man to Jesus to be healed. Jesus saw their faith and knew God was moving because it moved him. Jesus was always watching faith in people. If you want to see God moving then watch people with faith. They will stir you. They will provoke and encourage your faith to move. When they begin moving, you can’t help but move too.
You will not get around me and not be moved. I will say something to stimulate you to step into the word. You will at least get your feet wet. If you get around a person who moves in spiritual things then you will begin moving too. Wednesday night is this way. I watch people who have never given a word step in and give a word.
GETTING YOUR FEET WET will require you to step out of your comfort zone. One day Peter and the disciples were told by Jesus to go to the other side of the lake. So, they got into the boat and a storm blew in. The Bible says waves came up and the wind was contrary. About this time Jesus came walking on the water. It initially frightened the disciples, but then they realized it was the Lord.
Matthew 14:28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
Matthew 14:29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
If you walk on water you will get your feet wet. In other words, you will be on top of your circumstances as long as you focus on the ark – the Word and Spirit of God and those carrying it.
Peter was comfortable in the boat. He lived there. When you step out in faith and get your feet wet, it can become uncomfortable. There are waves, wind, or a flooding river. Certainly at some place and at some time, to go through your Jordan you must GET YOUR FEET WET.
Ananias told Paul God had some great plans and some special things ahead for him. Here is what Ananias said to Paul
Acts 22:16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.’
God is saying he has so many great things planned for us. He is asking all of us, “What are you waiting for?” Trust me. Get wet. There is a lot to do and a lot to conquer. There are some big grapes and big houses and land and cities and regions to take for the kingdom. Moreover, there is an abundant life waiting for you.
In St John chapter 13, we are told a story about Jesus washing the disciples’ feet. He told them they didn’t understand what he was doing, but they would one day. Jesus came to Peter to wash his feet.
John 13:8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
John 13:9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
There is a supernatural event beginning with getting our feet wet. Of course, we want more. We want to be totally wet. How many want more of the Spirit?
Ezekiel 47 tells of a vision Ezekiel had of a river coming from the throne of God. Ezekiel was led to ankle-deep water, then knee-deep, waste-deep, and finally Ezekiel began swimming.
There is another principle I want to mention about getting your feet wet. Those carrying the ark remained in the Jordan until every person had crossed. We all have loved ones we want to come into the kingdom, but if we don’t get our feet wet, they may never come in. Nothing will bring them in quicker than your being in the Word and in the things of the Spirit.
I don’t have time to develop it as I should, but stones were taken out of the Jordan to make a memorial, and stones were collected and heaped in the Jordan to leave a memorial (Josh 4:5,6, 9). One was seen and one was not seen. Interestingly, there was not a memorial left at the Red Sea crossing. Perhaps we see an emphasis on what God wants us to remember.
My point is you will carry the word and the spirit with you for the rest of your days as a memorial to you.
You will tell your children and anyone else you can the things of the Word and the things of the Spirit. Also, there will be a memorial in your heart between you and God because of the Word and the Spirit. Only God will be able to see your memorial. The Word and the Spirit give us a connection with the Father that nothing else can.
I want to encourage you today to GET YOUR FEET WET. So, be born of water and Spirit. Also, fix your eyes on those carrying the presence of God. Furthermore, watch their faith and you will see God moving. You will begin moving. Moreover, God will supernaturally stop the frightening current so you can go through the Word and the things of the Spirit. You will be able to clearly see the depth of the Word and the Spirit. The Lord wants to show you. He needs you to do this and POSSESS THE KINGDOM. What’s holding you back from GETTING YOUR FEET WET?
How many are going to step out with me and GET YOUR FEET WET today? Give the Lord a shout and a handclap.
