Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat reminds us that true faith requires letting go of backup plans and trusting God completely, even amid life’s storms. The story of Paul’s journey illustrates that spiritual growth happens when we cut ties with escape routes and commit to God’s purpose, no matter the cost. Only by staying faithful, enduring the storm, and giving up our lifeboats can we experience real deliverance and spiritual maturity.

Sail for Rome Acts 27:1-12

My Outline

Sail for Rome Acts 27:1-12 27
Stormy Wind Acts:27:13-30
Shipwreck Acts 27:31-44

The Journey Begins

If we look at this on a map, we see where the journey begins. They begin sailing from Caesarea. From there, they go to Tyre. Next, they travel up to Sidon, where Paul meets friends who help refresh him. After leaving Sidon, they sail over to Myra.

The winds turn contrary as they travel. The ship must go above Cyprus, then pass the checkpoint and head down into Crete. Somewhere between Crete and a little island called Lita, they run into a great storm called Euroclydon. Euroclydon is the name of a typhoon, like Typhoon Linda, Typhoon Sheila, or Typhoon Lidy. I used to wonder why these storms were called by female names, at least until I got married!

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

When I look at Scripture, I notice that one of the main symbols of the Holy Spirit is the wind. In Acts 27, you see a ship beaten by fierce winds until it is finally destroyed. The Bible says that in the last days, God will pour out His Spirit—the wind— upon all flesh. Revelation describes the last days with seals opened, trumpets sounding, and bowls poured out, all bringing judgment upon the world’s system and religious Babylon.

Outpouring of the Spirit

Is this outpouring of the Spirit what Joel speaks about? Let’s turn to Joel 2:28 and 32. Let’s read Joel chapter 2 together.

Joel 2:28

28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

You will know that the Spirit is poured out by the presence of dreams, visions, and prophecies. The Lord promises to pour His Spirit on sons and daughters, servants, and handmaidens. When this happens, wonders will appear in the heavens and on earth. There will be signs like blood, fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood, all before the great and terrible day of the Lord.

We sometimes talk only about the gifts and prophetic utterances, like those mentioned in Acts. But there is more to the Spirit’s work. The Holy Spirit not only brings tongues, prophecies, miracles, and healings, but also brings judgment. In these last days, the Spirit’s outpouring will include judgment upon the earth. That is what this passage is saying.

Joel 2:32

32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

The Scripture says that whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be delivered. There will be deliverance in Mount Zion and Jerusalem, just as the Lord promised. This promise applies to the remnant, too. Many Pentecostals talk about Joel chapter 2 and the Spirit being poured out in the last days. Yet we must remember that this outpouring also brings judgment, as Revelation teaches.

In Acts 27, we see the Spirit blowing on the world system and Babylon, both headed for destruction. The ship in the story represents the world. Paul begins as a prisoner on the ship, but in the end, he is the one ruling it. By his words, the ship is destroyed. Today, the world system and Babylon are still sailing, and true ministry is present in them. However, the ministry is not controlled by the system—it is a prisoner. Before all is finished, New Testament ministry will rise and, by God’s word, will destroy the system and Babylon. Everyone who travels with Paul is saved.

Invitation to New Testament Ministry

I invite you to join me in sailing with New Testament ministry. It will cost you everything. Your ship will be destroyed, and every lifeboat will be cut loose. You will see everything else thrown overboard. This is what happens when you truly follow New Testament ministry. Are you ready for this journey? Are you sure? Let’s go.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Before I begin, I need to say something important. Each person here has faced personal attacks in the past few months. These have touched your family, your finances, and your health. Something is beating against you right now. As we go through this lesson, I want you to see these trials as part of the message. Every one of you has suffered an attack that has distracted you from the kingdom of God—whether it’s illness, financial hardship, or marriage struggles. Christians everywhere are facing hardships. My message tonight does not offer false hope. You won’t feel relief instantly, but you will understand things as we continue.

One reason these attacks are coming is to distract you from what God is trying to do in our midst. Keep that in mind as we move forward tonight. The journey from Rome was determined. Our journey from Rome is also determined.

Acts 27:1

The Determined Journey

1 And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus’ band.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

In Acts 27:1, we read about the journey to Italy. Paul, along with other prisoners, was handed over to Julius, a centurion of Augustus’ band. This trip was not just a random journey. It was determined in advance.

I want you to see that your journey, too, is determined. You are heading for Rome. To get there, you have to go through many things. Paul went through Felix, Festus, and the Jews, and now he had to travel by boat.

You are going to go through storms. You will get wet, and you will have to throw things off. But you are heading for the place God wants you to be. For Paul, Rome meant facing Caesar—the beast. I need to tell you, it doesn’t get easier.

Every New Testament ministry ends up confronting the beast. I am not talking about 666. The real beast is the one inside each of us. The final step is meeting—and defeating—that beast within. Only then can you move forward.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Purpose and Fulfillment

This journey to Rome is determined. The word “determined” means it is decided for a purpose. God has a purpose for you and me. We can be a part of what God is doing, or we can be part of what gets destroyed.

It is worth repeating: We can fulfill our purpose and become like Christ, or the purpose itself can destroy us. This entire chapter is focused on the ship and its journey. The ship represents the world system. The wind—the Holy Ghost—will come against it. That world’s system will be destroyed.

Acts 27:3

3 And the next day we touched at Sidon. And Julius courteously entreated Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

In verse three, Paul arrived at Sidon and met with friends who refreshed him. The word “refresh” implies care, kindness, and hospitality. To me, there is nothing better than friends who refresh your spirit. Since I have been in this city, all I have found are people who refresh me. I am grateful for refreshing friends, not just new friends, but true friends who bring rest and peace.

This idea comes straight from the scriptures and fits well with ministry. A real ministry enjoys spending time with people who genuinely love and care for it. It is a blessing to be surrounded by refreshing company.

Acts 27:4

4 And when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

Moving on, the winds on the journey changed. The word for “spirit” means something like wind, breath, or blast. Sometimes in life, we face a strong blast of difficulties. Right now, some of you are going through such a blast.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

These winds were contrary. They were against the ship, pushing in the opposite direction. Throughout the chapter, this boat can only go where the wind allows. The boat is powerless against the wind.

When the wind really starts to blow hard, the right thing to do is to let it drive. You do nothing but let the wind take control. This describes the world system. The winds of God drive it, and it cannot move any way except where God allows. Everything that happens is under God’s control.

There is something important I want to show you from Mark chapter 4.

Mark 4:35-41

35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.
36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.
37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

In Mark 4:35, Jesus was in a boat with his disciples. The winds were contrary. On that evening, Jesus said, “Let us pass over to the other side.” I don’t want you to read that as just crossing a lake. Instead, see it as moving into a new age or a new dimension with Him. I want my life to move forward spiritually.

After they sent the crowds away, Jesus and the disciples got into the ship. Other little boats were with them. Suddenly, a great storm arose, and the waves beat against the vessel until it was filled with water. Some of you know what it feels like to be caught in a storm. Troubles are beating against your life, and it feels overwhelming. You may wonder where Jesus is.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Faith in the Storm

We read that He was in the back part of the boat, asleep on a pillow. He waited to see if they would call on Him or try to handle the situation themselves. He wanted to know if they had any faith.

They woke Him up and cried, “Master, don’t you care that we perish?” Jesus stood, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still.” The wind stopped, and there was a great calm. He asked his disciples, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” The disciples marveled, saying, “What kind of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Where is Christ in your storm? When life is raging and you ask, “Where are you, Lord?” He is waiting to see how much faith you have. When you genuinely need Him, He will calm your situation.

Acts 27:9

Dangerous Sailing

9 Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them,

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Now, looking further in Acts 27, we see that much time was spent. The journey continued for 2,000 years, and the perfect man has not yet arrived. Christ has not come back. The ages have not yet reached their end. Yet, something is happening in the spirit. The wind is beginning to pour out, and the end is near. Midnight is approaching. Things are going to change soon.

Sailing at this time was very dangerous. The word “dangerous” means insecure, but Vine says it’s even more than that—it’s prone to fail or to fall. I believe we are living in a time when you cannot play around with your faith. It is risky to act like a Christian but not be committed in the kingdom of God.

I see many people today who are just playing the church game. In the last days, they will say “Lord, Lord,” but God will tell them He never knew them. It is easy to fall when you are not truly in the kingdom. There is a lot of pretending and not enough real faith. I feel a strong warning about this right now.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Timing of Events – The Feasts

Verse nine sets the timing for these events. It was during the time of “the fast.” To understand what this means, you have to know the three special feasts of Israel. I haven’t taught you about them in detail yet, but here is an outline. The three annual feast seasons are: the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles.

Within these, there are seven individual feasts: Passover, Unleavened Bread, and Firstfruits (all during Passover season); Pentecost (during its own season); and then Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, and Tabernacles (during the Tabernacles season). In Acts 27, the story is set during the Tabernacles season, specifically the Day of Atonement.

Everything written about these feasts is a typology for your life, and I have them all written out for you. The timing and lessons from these feasts matter for what God is doing in us.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Passover was the time when the blood was applied to each house’s doorpost. It marked when the lamb, slain from the foundation of the world, covered us with his blood. This is the lesson from Exodus chapter 12.

The Feast of Unleavened Bread

The Feast of Unleavened Bread is about getting rid of all the leaven, or the junk, in your life. The bread had no leaven in it. This feast shows us the importance of becoming pure before the Lord and removing sin.

Firstfruits is another feast. Jesus is the firstfruits of the resurrection. But in the Old Testament, the people also brought their firstfruits as offerings to God. When we are baptized, we become a type of firstfruits too. We offer God the first of our labor, and we join in the resurrection life.

You know what happens at Pentecost. It’s about progression in spiritual growth. After Pentecost, we move toward the three final feasts found in Tabernacles.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

We often think those last three feasts—Trumpets, Day of Atonement, and Tabernacles—belong to Israel or some far-off people. But these feasts are just as vital for us today. The story in Acts 27 takes place right in the season of Tabernacles.

The Feast of Trumpets

Trumpets, the first feast in Tabernacles, served three practical purposes. Trumpets announced war, movement, and gathering. For the Christian, this means spiritual warfare, ongoing growth, and gathering together for fellowship around the Word.

Right now, we are living in the time of Trumpets. We are past the stages of Passover, Unleavened Bread, and Firstfruits, both as individuals and as a church. What we need to understand today is Trumpets—a call to unite, mature, and fight together.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Hell is working overtime to divide us. It does not matter if the division is about doctrine or belief. We will soon face a significant challenge right here among ourselves. If we let division win, we are being foolish. If we cannot stay united and in one accord, we are playing a game.

Day of Atonement and Priesthood

Next comes the Day of Atonement. The high priest put on white linen garments and entered the holy of holies once a year. There, he offered an offering for himself, his family, and the nation. This was a day of fasting, not feasting. How many of you have fasted lately? The Day of Atonement speaks of us entering our priestly place by putting on linen garments of righteousness.

Revelation 19:8

19 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Revelation 19:8 says that just before Jesus returns, the bride puts on garments of righteousness. The bride is preparing herself right now. Jesus will present to Himself a church with no spot, no wrinkle, or anything like that. This is happening right now.

This message also speaks of people who move into the holy of holies and overcome every enemy. The Day of Atonement represents a day of at-one-ness. You can even see the word “at-one-ment” in the word “atonement.” This is a time when God brings His people together as one.

The Final Feast of Tabernacles

Then comes the Feast of Tabernacles, which is the final feast. It ends God’s entire program. The people dwelt in tents and tabernacles, which showed their coming out of Egypt. This symbolizes our complete deliverance, coming out of bondage, and dwelling with the Lord forever as overcomers.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Let me share this quickly—it’s easier for me to read than to speak. The whole chapter in Acts is set during the Day of Atonement or the Feast of Tabernacles. I want to show you that this is a message about the end times. God will finish His work, perfect His church, and there will be believers who fully move into the Feast of Tabernacles. They will rule and reign with Jesus.

This chapter is set during the time when God will destroy the system of Egypt and take care of His people.

Acts 27:10

10 And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.

Someone on the ship knows what’s coming. There is a prophet who can discern what is about to happen. Paul is that prophet. He knows something is coming.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Prophetic Warning

I also know something. I know that the boat is going to sink. So, I can speak the truth that will sink it, or I can go down with it. There is someone in the ship who really knows what’s about to happen.

Vision and Confusion

Now I want to talk about Proverbs 29:18. I want to help you understand why there is so much confusion in the church world today. This is important.

Proverbs 29:18

18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

Why do people end up lost and defeated? It’s because there is no vision. People don’t know anything. They have no direction. They lack true revelation from God.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

All this confusion in the church world comes from a lack of vision. If there is no dream, no revelation, or no sight, God’s people become exposed, bare, and uncovered. They become vulnerable because there is no vision guiding them.

I don’t want to stay stuck in the past. I want to go forward. Yes, I have a vision because the Lord has given me insight and clarity. He has revealed what He’s doing today, and He has shown me through His word.

Rarity of the Word in Eli’s Day

We just finished looking at this idea in 1 Samuel 3:1, which talks about the rarity of God’s word and vision in Eli’s day. There was no open vision then, and that is why confusion reigned. I want to be different. I want to have a true vision from God and walk in it.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

1 Samuel 3:1

1 And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.

First Samuel 3:1 says the word of the Lord was precious, which means it was rare in those days. There was no open vision, no revelation from God. We have talked before about Eli’s corrupted religious system. His ministers—Hophni, Nihon, and Phinehas—were selfish and corrupt. There was no vision then, and people perished because of it.

Today, we have a similar problem. There is no vision in many churches. People are spiritually lost, following the same rotten patterns as Eli’s time. What did God do to Eli’s system? He destroyed it. That’s what will happen to the world’s system, just like the doomed ship in Acts. They are both going under.

Prophetic Warning from Paul

Did Paul warn the people about what was coming? Yes, he did. Shouldn’t a New Testament minister be able to warn you ahead of time about coming challenges? I believe I have done that. We’ve often known before things actually happened that trouble was on the way.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

There is a prophet in the boat. The New Testament ministry in the church is meant to show you the way forward. Paul knew where he was going. His destination was Rome, and he knew it would be costly. He warned those on board that they would face hardship and loss.

I am warning you too. You will need to throw some things overboard. Some things in your life must go, including old customs, traditions, and rituals that keep you from what God wants.

Acts 27:11-12

Authority and Worldly Wisdom

11 Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.
12 And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete, and lieth toward the south west and north west.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Look at who the centurion trusted. He believed the master and the owner of the ship rather than Paul. When Paul warned them in verse 10, the centurion chose worldly wisdom and authority over God’s word. The people’s purpose was to reach a safe haven, but they were mistaken.

In spiritual terms, Satan is described as the prince of this world. Jesus Himself called him that several times: in John 12:31, 14:30, and 16:11. Paul called Satan the god of this world in 2 Corinthians 4:4. This makes it clear how Satan acts as the master and owner of the ship, leading people astray.

The Choice of Authority

People today have a choice in who they listen to. Are they listening to Paul, a true messenger of God, or are they listening to the so-called master and owner of the ship—the world’s system? Many people are listening to the wrong voice. Even in the church world, they listen more to worldly authority than to real spiritual leaders.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Jesus and Paul both talked about the “world.” There are two main Greek words for “world” in the Bible. The word Jesus used is “Aeon,” which means “age” or “a period of time”—usually a messianic or spiritual age. Satan is called the prince of this age, the one who influences the times we live in. Paul often used the word “cosmos,” which means an ordered system or arrangement—the system of the world itself. Satan is called the god of this world, holding authority in both the times (aeon) and the systems (cosmos).

That is why it’s so important to think about which ship you’re in. If you’re just in the world’s ship, you’re letting Satan be your master. Sadly, most Christians listen more to Satan and the world’s influence than to God.

Listening to the Majority

Now, notice what people do. In the Bible, they didn’t listen to Paul’s warning, but instead, they held a vote. That still happens in the church today. People vote, they follow the majority, and don’t really care what the Word or real prophetic ministry says. Their main goal is just to “make it in,” to obtain heaven, or just barely escape judgment and trouble. Many are just trying to avoid hardship like tribulation or the “mark of the beast.” They are trying to slide by rather than pursue real maturity.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

But what do the apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers actually say? They remind us that we will not reach that goal until we all come together in faith and knowledge—until we reach full maturity in Christ. The leadership God gave the church isn’t there just to help you escape, but to help us all become a perfect man, mature and full-grown according to the measure of Christ. That’s the real purpose, and the real mark of Christian ministry.

Ephesians4:8-15

8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets, and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Acts 27:13-14

The Sudden Storm

13 And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete.
14 But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

At first, the wind blew softly, and everyone thought they had obtained their purpose. They assumed things were going well because conditions seemed calm. The word “supposing” means they only thought they were secure because things felt easy.

But then, suddenly, a tempestuous wind arose. This was a typhoon called Euroclydon. I can sense the wind picking up even in our own lives. I’ve felt stronger spiritual breezes lately. It feels like life is starting to blow our ships around, just like in the story. How about you? Are you feeling the effects of your own Euroclydon? I believe it’s going to shake up this world.

The word “tempestuous” literally means stormy. That storm came quickly—do you think it could happen suddenly for us, too? The Bible points us to Matthew 24, where Jesus says the last days will be sudden, just like the days of Noah. No one knows the exact day or hour—not even the angels, only the Father knows. It will come unexpectedly, just as the storm caught those on the ship off guard.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Matthew 24:36

36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

Jesus said the coming of the Son of Man will be like the days of Noah. Before the flood, people were eating, drinking, marrying, and living life as usual. They did this until the day Noah entered the ark. When judgment came, it was sudden. The flood took everyone by surprise and swept them away.

It will be the same at the end. Two people will be in a field—one will be taken by the storm, the other left. Two women (or two groups, even two churches) will be grinding at the mill—the storm will take one and leave the other. It all happens suddenly, without warning. That’s what I want you to see.

Now, let’s look at First Thessalonians. There is a group of people today who comfort themselves by saying, “peace and safety.” They’re always looking for escape. They hope nothing bad happens to them. But the Bible warns that these are the exact people who will be overtaken by sudden destruction. Those seeking escapism are the least prepared and most likely to be harmed when the storm comes.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

1 Thessalonians 5:1-3

Sudden Destruction and the Day of the Lord

1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

Paul writes that we don’t need anyone to tell us about times or seasons. We all know that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. It will happen suddenly, when people least expect it.

There are always those who say “peace and safety.” They are looking for escape and comfort. Scripture says that as soon as they say this, sudden destruction will come upon them. It will feel like a woman going into labor—there is no escaping what’s coming next. They won’t be able to hide or get away.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Will anyone be going anywhere? Are you ready? The warning is clear: Don’t be caught off guard. Unlike those who are in darkness, we are called to be ready and aware. When that day comes, you need to be prepared.

Let’s also look at Luke 21. There will be unexpected signs in the sun, moon, and stars. This is all talking about the coming of Jesus, and again, it will all happen very suddenly.

Luke 21:26-28

26Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

Soon I’ll say more about the stars. But first, listen to this. The earth will see nations in distress. People everywhere will be confused and troubled. The seas and waves will roar, shaking the nations. If you were in that situation—in that boat—your heart would be failing too.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Men’s hearts will fail because of fear. They will see troubling things happening in the world and won’t know what to do. Even the powers of heaven will be shaken. Then, in the midst of all this chaos, people will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

When will this happen? When all these things start to come to pass. That’s when we need to lift up our heads and look up. Our redemption is getting close. It could happen at any moment, but you need to understand that it happens when these things begin, not before.

The Mocking of Prophetic Warnings

Some people question why I preach these things. Some mock me or say I’m wrong, just like people mocked Paul and even Jesus. But I know that one day, those who mock will see the truth. When that day comes, many will be fearful because they did not listen or believe.

God’s Purpose in Shaking the World

God’s purpose is clear. He will destroy the systems of this world and bring people to their wits’ end. God sends storms not to harm us, but to wake us up and show us our need for Him.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Psalms 107:27

27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit’s end.

Job 1:19

19 And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

Acts 27:15

15 And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive.

This ship went wherever the wind blew her. It had no choice in the matter. It went wherever she was blown. And there’s a scripture in Hebrews 12:27, and it tells us that everything that can be shaken will be shaken.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Hebrews 12:27

27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

And Jesus goes along with that because he tells us in Matthew 24:29.

Matthew 24:29

29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

Jesus taught that He would come after everything had been shaken. Everything in your life will be tested. Don’t focus on whether the stars or buildings are going to be shaken. The real question is, what’s shaking in your own life? If something in you is shaking, it might not be part of God’s kingdom. The true kingdom is built on the rock and cannot be shaken.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

I tell people often, when you lose your sense of righteousness, peace, and joy, ask yourself if you are still in the right kingdom. If you have stepped out of those things, you are living in the wrong system. The shaking you feel is a sign that something is out of place. You need to let go of what’s causing the trouble.

Acts 27:16

Securing the Boat and Cutting Loose

16 And running under a certain island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat:

Now let’s talk about the ship and the lifeboat. We had a lot of work to pull the boat along. The Bible says they came under a certain island called Claudia and struggled to secure the lifeboat. The lifeboat is a small vessel carried aboard for emergencies.

Everyone wants to hold onto their lifeboat, just in case. Some people cling to their own way of escape, always preparing for a backup plan. If there’s any chance of reaching safety, they want to make sure the lifeboat is ready and their personal rapture is secured.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

But I want to challenge you. If you stick with me —if you follow real ministry —you’ll eventually be told to cut that lifeboat loose. The real word to you is: you cannot escape in your own way. Only those who endure to the end will be saved. That’s why you’ve got to stay in the main ship, cut free every backup plan, and trust God all the way—even when letting go is hard. Right now, many are still holding on to their lifeboats.

No Escape except Commitment

Some of you have a lifeboat—an escape plan. But if you remain under genuine New Testament ministry, you will eventually let it go. Your own way of escape, like the rapture-to-heaven mentality, will not last if you stick with the truth. You won’t want to let go, but the day will come when you realize you must cut off every backup plan and trust God fully. There is no real escape except total commitment to God’s kingdom. Little by little, you will be pressed to release every way out, even if right now you’re clinging to your lifeboat because you’re not sure I’m right.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Acts 27:20

All Hope Removed, Lessons from Darkness

20 And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.

Then there comes a moment when all hope of being saved by your own plans disappears. In the story, they did all they could—they roped the ship, added supports, and braced it, trying to save the system. People will do anything to keep their own system together. But no matter what is done, storms will break it apart. No amount of effort will stop God’s winds from ultimately destroying what needs to be destroyed.

When the trouble worsened, they lightened the ship by throwing freight overboard. Many of you have had to throw things out of your life in the last months, things that were weighing you down anyway. If you don’t get that weight—those unnecessary burdens—out, your ship will be destroyed.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Lightening the Ship Further

Finally, they even threw out the tackling and equipment. The more things intensify, the more you let go. Step by step, you’ll find yourself getting rid of stuff that doesn’t matter. Your own opinions and preferred ways matter less as your commitment to God gets stronger. When the wind blows harder, you throw away a bit more. Every time the storm batters your boat, you must let go of what will destroy you. That’s the way you grow through testing, and it’s also God’s way of breaking up the world’s system and Babylon—little by little, giving them to the wind.

There are people on the ship, but they aren’t part of the ship’s system. They are growing more devoted to the Holy Spirit and letting Him take charge. These people keep letting go of more of their own lives so they can have more of God’s life.

Verse 20 says that for many days, there was neither sun nor stars. I want you to turn to Matthew 24 for a lesson about stars. Matthew 24 is all about the last days and the return of Jesus.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Matthew 24:29

29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

In the story we’re reading from Acts chapter 27, I want you to notice something important. It was dark. They sailed for many days without sun or stars to guide them. That darkness was real—and it’s also a symbol.

Isaiah 60:2

2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.

Even though gross darkness covers the earth. Darkness has covered the people, but God still calls us to arise and shine.

In the story, it’s dark, and there are no stars to navigate by. If you don’t have a star in the sky and no compass, you can’t steer a ship at night. In life, many people use the wrong stars to guide them—celebrities, public figures, and false lights. These stars reflect only sunlight. When the sun goes dark, the stars lose their light too.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

What’s going to happen in the last days? The Bible tells us the stars will fall. All those false lights people use as guidance will be gone. Instead of guiding your life by these stars, get rooted in the Word. Don’t follow stars—follow the scriptures.

Shaking of Heaven’s Powers

The powers of heaven are going to be shaken. The “great lights” and so-called stars will fall. These false lights only seem bright because they reflect God, but they were never the true light.

Real Christians need to be guided by the Holy Spirit, not human celebrities or teachers. Let the wind—the Holy Spirit—drive and guide you. When that happens, you will become a real light in the measure, stature, and fullness of Christ.

Authentic Leadership in Crisis

The story continues. All hope of escape is lost. People finally abandon the hope of being instantly raptured. They must grow spiritually, not just seek an escape. Paul stands on the ship and brings authentic leadership, just as Joseph once did in Egypt. Both were once prisoners, but later ended up ruling.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Real ministry is rising up now, in the middle of a crooked generation. These leaders will guide us, teach us what matters, and help us grow in faith and spiritual maturity. The first thing Paul says is, “You should have listened to me.” Sometimes it takes a storm for people to realize they should have listened to authentic spiritual authority.

Acts 27:21

21 But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.

Paul stood up in the middle of the crisis and addressed everyone. He told them they should have listened to him and not set out from Crete. They should not have followed the advice of worldly leaders. If they had listened to proper spiritual direction, they wouldn’t be in this mess.

I can’t help but think about how many times I want to say this to people. If only you had listened when I spoke God’s word, you could have avoided so much trouble. Sometimes, people disregard the message and watch their clocks, thinking about what else they want to do. But there will come a day when people won’t care about time. They will want to hear every word from God.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

That time will come when life gets dark enough—when people are desperate enough. In those moments, God’s word becomes the only thing that matters.

Paul also told them to be of good cheer, even though it sounded crazy. The storm was battering the ship, yet Paul’s message was upbeat. This seems strange, but if you really listen to true spiritual leaders and ignore the influence of the world’s stars, you will find safety and hope. If you follow God’s word, you’ll be saved, no matter how chaotic life gets.

Acts 27:22-23

22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship.
23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,
24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Paul said that an angel of God stood by him that night. Let me remind you what the word “angel” means. It literally means a messenger, one who brings tidings. In fact, it can even indicate a pastor—a spiritual leader who brings God’s message. When you’re in the midst of the storm, you want a real pastor or messenger standing by your side.

No matter how trouble comes, the word of the Lord often comes through these spiritual messengers. It’s the word brought to us by a faithful pastor that saves lives and keeps people from destruction.

The Angel’s Message of Deliverance

The angel’s message to Paul was, “Fear not. You must stand before Caesar.” Every faithful ministry has to confront the beast—face opposition and hardship. I deal with the beast’s influence in my life and in yours. My goal is to keep those marks of the beast off you and to mark your life with God’s word instead. That’s my calling and my work as a pastor.

The angel told Paul that everyone who sails with him would be granted safety. This is important. If you choose to sail with authentic spiritual leadership and follow the message God gives, you will receive a promise of protection and deliverance. God will give you and everyone who walks with His word a way through.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Acts 27:24

24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.

The angel told Paul, “Don’t be afraid. You must go before Caesar.” God also promised that everyone sailing with Paul would be safe. I ask, how many of you want to sail with me? If you do, you’ll make it. God gives this assurance to all who stay with the word and obey Him. Those willing to journey with true ministry will find protection and deliverance.

Paul encourages them again to be of good cheer. He knew his destination, and I know mine. Do you know where you’re heading? Paul was confident he’d face Caesar as part of God’s plan.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Acts 27:27

27 But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight the shipmen deemed that they drew near to some country;
28 And sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found it fifteen fathoms.
29 Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.

It was about midnight—an essential time in scripture. Midnight marks the end of one day and the start of another. Spiritually, it’s the end of one age and the beginning of a new time. Right now, it feels like midnight. Everything is about to change, and Paul is about to take charge of the ship.

Sounding for Depth

They began “sounding,” which means they measured the depth of the water using a lead weight and a rope. Suddenly, they realized the water was getting shallow—they were about to hit rocks. It hit them that danger was close, and they were really going to face hardship.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Next, they threw out four anchors: one for the North, East, South, and West. This message isn’t limited to one small place—it’s spreading everywhere, touching lives across the world. As the situation changed, they kept sounding for depth, constantly tracking how close they were to trouble.

I want to help you understand where we are in God’s timetable. No one knows the precise day or hour for God’s intervention, but we can recognize the season and sense how close we are to trouble. I don’t need to have special insight to look at your life and see whether you’re headed for safety or destruction—you look at the spiritual depth. The deeper you are, the further you are from danger. Shallow water means rocks are near, and rocks spell trouble for any ship.

Acts 27:29

29Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

When the situation grew desperate, the people in the story started to pray. The word “wished” actually means to pray to God. Sadly, some wait until they’re almost wrecked before they pray. If we were to pray all the time, we wouldn’t get so close to the rocks.

Acts 27:30

Cutting Off the Lifeboat

30 And as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship,
31 Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.
32 Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

The Bible says the sailors let down the boat, trying to escape secretly from the main ship. This reminds me of the idea of a secret rapture—slipping away unnoticed. They held onto their lifeboat for a last escape.

But in verse 31, Paul takes charge. He tells them that unless they stay on the ship, they cannot be saved. Many questions about the end times are answered in Matthew 24, though people don’t always want to accept what it says. Scripture is clear—you must stay in the ship to be saved. Don’t try to escape or take shortcuts. Endure and trust God’s plan for your safety.

Matthew 24:13

13But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Verse 13 makes it clear: only those who endure to the very end will be saved. There’s no shortcut or middle ground—it’s about staying faithful all the way.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

If God could keep Joseph, the children of Israel, the three Hebrew children, Daniel, Peter, and Paul safe, then He can keep me and you safe too. If God isn’t able to keep His own, He’s not worth following. No matter what storm we face and no matter how bad things get, God is in the boat with us. I want you to be ready for any trouble that comes your way. Don’t wait for things to get desperate before you act. Do what God has already told you to do—stand firm and speak in faith.

Acts 27:32

32 Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.

They cut off the lifeboat and let it fall away. That’s a symbol of letting go of backup plans and fully trusting God. My prayer is that everyone learns to let go of lifeboats—the things they rely on for escape. Everyone needs to understand that you can’t make it outside the body of Christ. Only those who endure and grow in faith will mature into the perfect man Christ desires. Let go of the urge to escape and focus on growing.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Paul then took meat, broke it, and shared it—just like the Lord’s supper. Only after they ate the bread and meat did they find real joy. Many today say they want spiritual “meat,” but most settle for less. It’s just like Joseph preparing food in Egypt so God’s people wouldn’t starve during the famine. God is raising up ministries to provide real food—solid teaching—for those who are hungry. There’s a famine for truth and vision, and people are dying for lack of real spiritual nourishment.

Acts 27:33

33 And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take meat, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing.
34 Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.
35 And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

36 Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat.
37 And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls.
38 And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea.

Hebrews chapter five says that some believers should be teachers by this time, yet they need someone to reteach them the basics. Instead of growing up and eating spiritual meat, they still need milk. Those who live on milk are unskillful in the word of righteousness and are spiritual infants. I aim to give you solid food. I want to help you grow up and develop real skill in the Word, not stay spiritually immature.

When I look at the church and popular media, I see too many Christians stuck on milk. But scripture says those who eat meat become mature, their senses trained to discern good from evil.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Eating the Bread and Meat

Paul gave bread and meat—not just milk. Once they received it, the people became cheerful. At first, they thought Paul was crazy for urging cheer in the middle of a storm. But once they ate the meat, their attitude changed. When you take in real spiritual meat, it energizes you, makes you bold, and transforms you—even if the world thinks you’re a little crazy.

The word “health” mentioned here actually means “salvation.” The bread Paul gave isn’t just for feeling better—it’s for spiritual rescue and safety. The word I give you brings salvation, rescue, and security. Take it, eat it, and you’ll make it through.

Everyone on the boat began to feel encouraged, even though the storm battered them. Righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost remained, no matter how hard the world hit them.

There were 276 people on that boat. That’s a big group. Then the story says the waves broke up the ship’s stern. Let’s finish the story by reading those final verses together.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Acts 27:39-44

The Shipwreck and Survival

39 And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they discovered a certain creek with a shore, into the which they were minded, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship.
40 And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bands, and hoised up the mainsail to the wind, and made toward shore.
41 And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.

42 And the soldiers’ counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape.
43 But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:
44 And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

When daylight came, they didn’t recognize the land, but they saw a creek with a shore and aimed to beach the ship there. They lifted their anchors, let the ship drift, loosened the rudder, and raised the sail to head for the shore.

They found themselves where two seas met. The ship ran aground. The front of the ship stuck fast and wouldn’t move, while the violent waves shattered the back. The soldiers wanted to kill the prisoners to prevent anyone from escaping, but the centurion wanted to save Paul. He commanded those who could swim to jump overboard and reach the land. The rest made it by clinging to boards and broken pieces of the ship.

Safe through Judgment, Not through Escape

Everyone sailing with Paul survived, but the ship itself was destroyed. The world system, represented by the ship, was crushed. When the trouble came, it was violent and decisive. I don’t want to be stuck in the back row in that moment—I want to be up front, actively trusting God. The ship was ripped apart by the sea, which stands for humanity and people. The end of man’s system cannot stand against the storm.

Acts Series Chapter 27: How to Let Go of Every Lifeboat

Revelation 17:15

15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

Revelation 17:15 explains that water (seas) represent “peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.” We know the wind represents the Holy Spirit. The wind, combined with God’s people, will destroy the world’s system and any personal systems we build. Pay attention—the people, the Word, and the Spirit together will tear apart all human customs, traditions, religions, doctrines, and governments.

Ministry Rises in the Storm

But in the middle of these storms, God still raises up ministries. There are leaders who speak God’s Word, feed His people, and bring real deliverance.

Father, we love and praise you tonight. Thank you for your Word and the purpose you’ve given.
