We are doubling up on Father’s Day this year with a two-part lesson attempting to answer the question: “What Is The Greatest Gift A Father Can Give His Child?” Is it to lead his child to salvation, or love, or maybe spend time with his child, or leave an inheritance for his child, etc.? No.
Proverbs 4:7 WISDOM IS SUPREME; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
(NLT) Proverbs 4:7 GETTING WISDOM IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING you can do!
(KJV) Proverbs 4:7 WISDOM IS THE PRINCIPAL THING; therefore get wisdom…
Nothing is more important than wisdom. Wisdom is the greatest gift any father can give or get any child. If a father is capable of getting and teaching his child wisdom the child will come to salvation, the father will love his child, he will spend time with his child, and the father will leave a healthy inheritance.
We see it is a father’s responsibility to give his children wisdom (Pro. 18:8; 4:1; 5:1; 6:20, etc.), but we’re also seeing how this is done. It’s accomplished by teaching children ten crucial wisdoms. If a child conducts their life according to these ten wisdoms they will be a blessing to their father, a blessing to their mother, a blessing to their society and following generations, and will be blessed by God.
1) Teach your children to fear the Lord.
Proverbs 1:7 THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE BEGINNING of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Proverbs 9:10 “THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Every wise person fears the Lord. It’s a great way to determine if you are wise or if anyone is wise. Father, you begin teaching and getting your child wisdom here. Teach your children God’s goodness, but teach your child the power of God and the judgments of God. Teach your children who God loves he chastens (Heb 12:6-7). This is the beginning aspect of the greatest thing you will ever give your child. Your child will never be wise if your child does not fear the Lord.
The primary way this is accomplished is by a father’s example. Dad, do you have a healthy fear of the Lord? Do you talk about the things of God with your children? Do your children observe you worshiping, praising, giving, and reading God’s word? How are you teaching your children to conduct their lives? It begins by fearing the Lord.
2) Teach your children to guard their mind and heart.
Proverbs 12:8 A man is praised ACCORDING TO HIS WISDOM, but men with WARPED MINDS are despised.
Proverbs 4:23 Above all else, GUARD YOUR HEART, for it is the wellspring of life.
The KJV says “for out of it are the issues of life.” Father, your child will have serious issues if you don’t give them this. The mind is what we call the “consciousness.” The heart is the deeper “subconscious.” Once something is in the subconscious heart it can be really, really good, or really, really bad (Mat. 15:19). It will bring issues of life, or it will bring issues of death.
A father should guard a child’s mind as long as possible, but far more importantly, teach the child the importance of guarding their own mind. Once through the mind, it enters the heart. What will warp a mind? Will lyrics in music? Will cussing and profanities? How about books and magazines? Will computer games? Furthermore, will forming wrong relationships? Moreover, will pornography? Will drugs? In today’s society with the bombardment from every direction teaching your child to guard their mind and heart is imperative, but such a formidable task for any father. However, it’s far easier to teach them than to try to make them. It’s easier to take the time and effort when young to teach them than pay the penalty of a warped mind and issues later. Father, teach your children to guard their minds and hearts.
3) Teach your child the wisdom of discipline.
Proverbs 3:11-12 My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke, BECAUSE THE LORD DISCIPLINES THOSE HE LOVES, AS A FATHER THE SON HE DELIGHTS IN.
If a father loves his child the way the Lord loves, a father will discipline his child.
Proverbs 22:15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.
Proverbs 10:13 Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks judgment.
Discipline is never done in anger, but must be done by a good father. You will not have a wise child without it. The purpose is to conform the child to wisdom and drive out foolishness and folly.
Proverbs 5:23 HE WILL DIE FOR LACK OF DISCIPLINE, led astray by his own great folly.
Proverbs 23:13-14 DO NOT WITHHOLD DISCIPLINE from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die. Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death.
We parents have been warped by society labeling physical discipline as abuse and we see the results in today’s society. It’s abuse not to execute discipline to a child. Discipline done in love is necessary to have wise children and there is no greater gift you can give your child than wisdom. There is no excuse for an undisciplined child and father you are responsible for getting it done.
4) Teach your children a proper selection of companions.
People remain at the level of their companions.
Proverbs 1:10-15 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them. If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for someone’s blood, let’s waylay some harmless soul; let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; throw in your lot with us, and we will share a common purse” – my son, DO NOT GO ALONG WITH THEM, do not set foot on their paths
The wrong gang – companions – will tempt and appeal to your child. My wife had amazing discernment here. I learned to listen to her. There is tremendous peer pressure coming upon your child to conform to a negative standard. Teach them to select their companions and not be selected by their companions. How do you do this? You begin by saying I don’t want you around this person and don’t allow them to be. The child won’t like it, but will begin learning to be selective in relationships. If they feel you don’t care, they won’t care. If they know it’s a priority to you, it will become a priority to them.
Proverbs 2:12-15 WISDOM WILL SAVE YOU FROM THE WAYS OF WICKED MEN, from men whose words are perverse, who leave the straight paths to walk in dark ways, who delight in doing wrong and rejoice in the perverseness of evil, whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways.
Proverbs 18:24 A man of MANY COMPANIONS MAY COME TO RUIN, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Your child must have the wisdom to avoid wicked people. That’s you, dad. Teach your children having many companions is not wise. A person who wants to be popular and buddies with just anyone may come to ruin.
5) Teach your child to control their body.
Just because a child is young does not mean they don’t have physical passions and their passions will accelerate especially stirred by our promiscuous society.
Proverbs 7:22-23 All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, LITTLE KNOWING IT WILL COST HIM HIS LIFE.
A close friend was talking about a decision he once made in this area. I asked if he would do it again. He quoted me the previous verse. He’d lost everything – his family, his occupation, his respect – it cost him his life. Father, teach your children this. Don’t just tell them about the birds and the bees. Teach them birds will peck your eyes out and there are killer bees.
6) Teach your child to enjoy their spouse.
Proverbs 5:18-19 May your fountain be blessed, and may you REJOICE IN THE WIFE OF YOUR YOUTH. A loving doe, a graceful deer – may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love.
Enjoy your spouse. Rejoice! Let your spouse’s sexuality satisfy you always. Allow your spouse to captivate you. Father, you teach your son how to treat his wife by how you treat your wife. I am constantly amazed at how my son treats his wife. I know he at least got some of it from me. Father, you teach your daughter how she should be treated by her spouse by how you treat your wife. One of the saddest things I’ve seen was how daughters of narcissistic abusive fathers marry narcissistic abusive men and sons of abusive fathers abuse their wives. “…and the sin of the fathers go to the third and fourth generation.”
7) Teach your child to watch their words.
Proverbs 4:24 Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
How I wish my father had taught me this. My dad, as loving and kind as any man could be, was amazingly efficient with four-letter cuss words. Before I came out of my mother’s womb I’d heard every cuss word known to man. Sadly, I did a good job teaching my son how to cuss. A primary thing I dislike about myself today is how those words are still in my sub-consciousness (heart). I overcame “casual cussing,” but “casual cussing” is still deep in there. “Casual cussing” is when frustrations and anger upset us emotionally “causing” us to cuss. Teach your child not to speak perversity and the best way dad is for you not to speak perversities and to express dissatisfaction when spoken around you.
This could mean turning your favorite television program or even turning the Country Music Awards. Teach them how the people they will respect most in life later will be people who decided not to cuss, use perversity, or corrupt talk.
Proverbs 10:32 The LIPS of the RIGHTEOUS know what is FITTING, but the MOUTH of the WICKED only what is PERVERSE.
Proverbs 6:12 A scoundrel and villain, who goes about with a corrupt mouth… he always stirs up dissension.
Avoid people who go about with a corrupt mouth.
Proverbs 10:19 When words are many, sin is not absent, but HE WHO HOLDS HIS TONGUE IS WISE.
Teach your children not to always be talking. Teach them to control and hold their tongue. We don’t need to express every thought we have and if wise we won’t.
Proverbs 10:11 The MOUTH of the RIGHTEOUS is a FOUNTAIN OF LIFE, but VIOLENCE overwhelms the MOUTH of the WICKED.
Fathers teach your children to bless people with their mouths. Say good things. Bring life with their words, not wickedness and perversity.
8) Teach your children to work and not be lazy.
Proverbs 6:6-9 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be WISE! It has NO COMMANDER, NO OVERSEER OR RULER, yet it stores its PROVISIONS in summer and gathers its food at harvest. How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest – and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.
Teach your children how to be self-motivated and not need a supervisor around. Nearly anyone will work if stood over with a whip. Teach them to work so they will have provisions for the future. Teach them independence, not dependency.
9) Teach your children to manage their money.
Proverbs 3:9-10 HONOR THE LORD WITH YOUR WEALTH, with the firstfruits of all your crops; THEN YOUR barns will be filled to OVERFLOWING, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
Financially giving to the Lord is honoring the Lord. Teach your child while young and early on that if they are generous with God, God will be generous with them. Include God in your finances and he will include you in his overflowing blessings. We taught our children early to include God in their finances. Also, teach your child whatever they do with the remainder of their money do it to honor the Lord. Don’t dishonor God by wasting wealth.
10) Teach your child to love their neighbor.
Proverbs 3:27-28 Do not withhold good FROM THOSE WHO DESERVE IT when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, “Come back later; I’ll give it tomorrow” – when you now have it with you.
Help people when you can. If you’ve been blessed and can help people do it. Help financially or in other ways, but do something for less fortunate people. Notice it does say to help those who deserve it. People will take advantage of your generosity.
Teaching wisdom is the duty of a father. As fathers, we are responsible for the next generation. How are you doing? Or, how did you do? If you fail to teach your child to fear God, the world will teach him to hate God. Also, if you fail to teach your child to guard their mind, the world will teach them how to warp their mind. Furthermore, if you fail to discipline your child, the world will teach them issues they and you will regret. Also, if you fail to teach your child to carefully select companions, the world will select companions for them. Furthermore, if you fail to teach your child to control their body, the world will teach them immortality.
If you fail to teach your child to enjoy their spouse, the world will teach them how to destroy their marriage
And if you fail to teach your child to guard their words, the world will teach them how to fill it with filth and corruption. Also, if you fail to teach your child to work, the world will teach them to be a lazy sluggard. Furthermore, if you fail to teach your child to manage their money, the world will teach them how to waste it and be in financial bondage all their life. Moreover, if you fail to teach your child to love their neighbor, the world will teach them to love only themselves.
What is the greatest gift a father can give his children? It’s wisdom. If your children conduct their lives with these ten wisdoms they will be successful godly people blessed by God.
