The Wonderful Boasting Tongue
We are doing our series about LOCKING AND UNLOCKING THE TONGUE. This is the fourth lesson in our series. The last two have been about the LOCKING ASPECT. Today, I want to talk about the UNLOCKING OF THE WONDERFUL BOASTING TONGUE. Your tongue literally sets the course of a great life for you no matter how large the problem or fierce the storm you face. James linked the bit in a horse’s mouth to the tongue. He talked about how the small bit directs the huge animal over mountains and through valleys. Again, speaking about the tongue, James said a small rudder on a huge ship directs the ship even in fierce waves and storms. In other words, your tongue can get you through the highs, lows, and tough times of life. Then James said this.
James 3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and BOASTETH GREAT THINGS.
We usually think of this boasting as negative, but this is not necessarily true. It can be wonderful. The word boasteth is the Greek word megalaucheo and means to talk big, i.e. be grandiloquent (arrogant, egotistic). I can’t think along the terms of a boasting tongue and not think about David and the giant, Goliath. We all heard how David went to face his giant of a problem with only a sling and five stones. 1 Samuel 17:45-47 THEN SAID DAVID TO THE PHILISTINE…
When you come eyeball to eyeball with a giant problem, say something to it before you fight it. Set the course. Tell it what is going to happen. I enjoy the way the Message Bible translates these verses.
(The Message Bible) …”You come at me with sword and spear and battle-ax. I come at you in the name of GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies, the God of Israel’s troops, whom you curse and mock. This very day GOD is handing you over TO ME. I’M ABOUT TO KILL YOU, CUT OFF YOUR HEAD, AND SERVE UP YOUR BODY AND THE BODIES OF YOUR PHILISTINE BUDDIES TO THE CROWS AND COYOTES. The whole earth will know that there’s an extraordinary God in Israel. And everyone gathered here will learn that GOD doesn’t save by means of sword or spear. The battle belongs to GOD- he’s handing you to us on a platter!”
Does it sound like David boasts great things to you? Did David sound like a “big talker” to you? Did it sound foolish, arrogant, and egotistical? You know it does, but it worked! It set the course. This little teenager told the giant what would happen. David said I will kill you, cut off your head, and serve your body and the bodies of your buddies to the crows and coyotes. David said I will show the whole earth there’s an extraordinary God! Do you see David set his fate by his words? Here is what Jesus said.
Matthew 12:37 For by thy words thou SHALT BE JUSTIFIED…
(NLT) The words you say NOW reflect YOUR FATE THEN…
The words you speak NOW determine YOUR FATE THEN. David set his fate by his words. David hit the giant in the head with a stone from his sling like a 30/30 rifle killing his huge problem. His giant crumbled like a noodle. As Goliath lay on the ground face down, David pulled the giant’s sword from its scabbard and used Goliath’s sword to cut off Goliath’s head. When the headless giant’s buddies saw Goliath dead, they took off running. The armies of Israel slaughtered them. The roads became a platter where the vultures, crows, and coyotes feasted. It all happened exactly as David’s WONDERFUL BOASTING TONGUE said.
I am trying to tell you, it might sound ridiculous, or like you are boasting, when you speak to the giants in your world. I am certain it sounded arrogant and boastful when Jesus spoke to the waves and the wind and said, Peace be still; but you know what…? THE WIND CEASED AND THERE WAS A GREAT CALM. I am sure it sounded like “big talk” and boastful when Peter told the cripple Peter did not have any silver or gold to give him, however, he would give him what he had, In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk; but, you know what…? THE MAN WENT RUNNING AND LEAPING AND PRAISING GOD.
It sounded foolish one day when I commanded a breached baby to turn in her mother’s womb, but you know what…?
It sounds arrogant to command cancer to die at the roots, but you know what…? Yes, it sounds like “big talk” to tell the parents of a daughter with a crushed liver from a car crash their daughter will live and not die, but you know what…?
Mark 11:23 For verily I say unto you, THAT WHOSOEVER SHALL SAY unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he SAITH shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he SAITH. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
Jesus said to use your mouth to speak to mountains. Let it come out of your heart with desire and it will happen. I remember being in heavy debt and being very frustrated with my financial situation. I began speaking to the mountain. Do you know what…? In a short time, I was out of debt. Once, I physically and mentally wore myself out building a house. My money was running out. I remember walking through the dried-in shell and speaking to walls, floors, ceiling, plumbing, etc. telling it how it was completed excellently within my budget. Do you know what…?
My emphasis today is to help you UNLOCK THE WONDERFUL BOASTING TONGUE. If you use it correctly, it will bring you a fruitful enjoyable life.
Proverbs 18:21 …LIFE IS IN THE POWER OF THE TONGUE: and THEY THAT LOVE IT shall eat the fruit thereof.
Your tongue has POWER! God made it this way. The verse says THEY THAT LOVE IT… They that love what? LOVE THEIR TONGUE! They SHALL EAT THE FRUIT OF IT. Have you ever heard the saying, “You are going to eat those words!”? This is true, but not only negatively. Look at what God’s Word Translation says.
(God’s Word Translation) Proverbs 18:21 The tongue has THE POWER OF LIFE and death, and those who LOVE TO TALK will have to eat their own words.
David ate his words. Jesus ate his words. Peter ate his words. God has given you a WONDERFUL BOASTING TONGUE to bear the fruits of an abundant life (Joh 10:10) for you to eat.
The tongue is a wonderful gift. God gave no other aspect of his creation the power of the tongue as he gave it to humans. Dolphins can beep and click, dogs can bark and howl, and parrots can mimic, but nothing can do what we can do because of THE WONDERFUL BOASTING TONGUE. The power of speech is just that, POWER. Can you imagine me up here attempting to communicate this message to you without the power of speech? I could grunt, motion with my hands, and make noises; but nothing powerful would take place. However, the mouth is for more than communication. IT IS POWER TO SET THE COURSE OF OUR LIVES.
Used properly, you can eat the fruit of it. With its power, you can pass through the storms of life as you bring down Goliaths and move mountains.
How many would give thanks to the Lord right now because God has given you the power of the tongue? Go ahead and do it! Unlock your tongue and give him thanks. You need to be thankful for your WONDERFUL BOASTING TONGUE. It is a gift from God to you.
The Bible teaches us fathers are to instruct their children.
Most everyone knows about Tiger Woods. At present, most consider him the greatest golfer ever to play the game. His father, Earl Woods, died this week. Most people do not know Earl Woods taught Tiger how to play golf and coached Tiger as a child. Earl continued to work with Tiger until Earl was unable because of illness. In the year 2000, Tiger was 24 years old. He won four major golf tournaments; the U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur, the British Open, and the British Amateur.[i] My point is we should be able to learn victorious living from our fathers. How much more victory should we learn from our heavenly Father?
Creating for yourself a victorious life and a personal world with your words is one of the first principles you should learn in the Bible from Father God.
And God SAID, Let there be light: and there was light. (first day) Genesis 1:3
And God SAID… (second day) Genesis 1:6
He continues.
And God SAID… Genesis 1:9
And God SAID… (third day) Genesis 1:11
It goes on.
And God SAID… (fourth day) Genesis 1:14
And God SAID… (fifth day) Genesis 1:20
Finally, it says,
And God SAID, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness… (sixth day) Genesis 1:26
(NLT) Genesis 1:31 Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was EXCELLENT IN EVERY WAY…
God created the world and universe he wanted by his words. Recall when God began, the Bible says the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep (Gen 1:2). The next verse was when God began to speak to the formless, void, and dark world. God did not only “believe” it and it happened. He did not just think about it. He did not just imagine it. Actually, He spoke and when he spoke and continued to speak, things began to change. It is the same way with you. Maybe your world is not as formed as you want. Maybe it is void of the life you want. Or maybe your world is dark. You can change it with THE WONDERFUL BOASTING TONGUE.
A very interesting point is God continued speaking to his world every day, making his world EXCELLENT IN EVERY WAY. You direct the creation of your world and your fate with spoken words every day. God prophesied to his world. If you will, you can prophesy your future and make it live.
In Ezekiel 37, there is a very interesting story. The prophet Ezekiel saw a vision of a valley of old dry human bones. God asked Ezekiel a question.
Ezekiel 37:3 He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I said, “O Sovereign LORD, you alone know.”
You may be going through a dry and dead time. You look and you see a valley – a low place in life – of dead dry dreams, dry finances, dry relationships, dry health, dry life, etc. It may seem impossible for it to live again. Can it live? Read what God told Ezekiel to do.
Ezekiel 37:4 Then he said to me, Prophesy to these bones and SAY TO THEM, Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD!
God told Ezekiel to speak to dry, brittle, dead bones. God told Ezekiel to speak to an absolutely impossible situation. Some of you today are facing situations that seem impossible in the natural. Maybe your marriage seems impossible. Maybe it seems impossible to be healed. Or maybe it seems impossible for your child to serve God. It may seem impossible for you to get out of debt. It may seem impossible for your business to succeed. Maybe it seems impossible for you to be happy again. If so, you are looking at a valley of dry, dead bones. GOD IS SAYING THE SAME THING TO YOU HE SAID TO EZEKIEL. — USE THE WONDERFUL BOASTING TONGUE HE GAVE YOU AND SPEAK TO THOSE DEAD BONES.
Ezekiel spoke as did David to Goliath, as did God to the darkness, as did Jesus to the waves and wind, and as did Peter to the cripple. Speak to your situation!
Ezekiel 37:7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And AS I WAS PROPHESYING, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and THE BONES CAME TOGETHER, BONE TO BONE.
As you begin to speak, things will begin to come together. The marriage comes together with the finances. The children come together with their parents. Success comes together with happiness. The Bible says the bones came together and flesh came on the bones, but God did not allow Ezekiel to stop with it only coming together. God wanted it excellent in every way.
Ezekiel 37:9 Then he said to me, Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and SAY TO IT, This is what the Sovereign LORD says…
Ezekiel was to continue speaking until it happened. We are not finished speaking until it is excellent in every way. We do not stop speaking to it until we have the world we desire. Many times, we get so far along and then stop. We hit Goliath in the head but failed to cut off his head. We get some light, but not the garden. The wind stops, but the waves keep coming. People get better, but not healed. We get the dry bones together but fail to get breath into them. Do not stop. Speak to it until it lives.
Your tongue is wonderful. It can and should BOAST GREAT THINGS. It will set your course for life, bring down your Goliaths, set your fate, move your mountains, and make your dead dreams come alive. Your tongue is powerful. If you will dare to speak to your situation, it will begin to change. You can create a world excellent in every way. Use words to change your situation and do not stop speaking to the situation until it is excellent in every way. God has given you THE WONDERFUL BOASTING TONGUE. Give the Lord a shout!
