John 20:1-5
1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
2 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.
3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.
4 So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.
5 And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.
John 20:6-10
6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,
7 And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.
8 Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.
9 For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.
10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.

What was it John found in the tomb that brought him to belief? Also, what was it that took him to a place in belief no miracle could accomplish? Indeed, what was so transforming even above witnessing Jesus open blind eyes, open deaf ears, straighten crippled limbs, and raise people from the dead, made John say, “I saw, and believed”?
We know John saw the empty linen grave wrappings. We read in John 19 that Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus supplied linen and spices for the burial. The dead person was wrapped with a cloth beginning at the neck and going around and around to the feet. The face and head were covered with what was called a napkin which was laid upon the face and folded over the top of the head. Spices, myrrh, and aloes were then placed upon the wrappings to discourage the soon-to-come smell.
John and Peter saw the linen garment wrapped and the napkin lying separately just as they had been placed around Jesus. The herbs and spices were lying exactly where they had been placed. The only difference was the body of Jesus was not in the wrappings. It would have been impossible for anyone to remove his body without disturbing the spices and unwrapping the linen. For John, there was only one answer. He believed.
What is there about this resurrection day that is superior to all other days and in the life of Christ? What is there about resurrection day that stirs people to go to church and experience a little of the Spirit of God?
1. MUST BE THE THIRD DAY — “INCLUSIVE RECKONING”
Matthew 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

Jesus had told His disciples four events must happen. The “must” means “necessary and of necessity.” This is the must of must be born again and the must of the son of man must be lifted up. It is the must of he must increase and I must decrease. Jesus must go to Jerusalem. No other city would do. He must be killed and raised in Jerusalem. Daniel had said 490 years were left for the holy city to finish the transgression (Dan 9:24). The finishing transgression would be to kill the Messiah. Jesus must go unto Jerusalem.
Jesus must suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes. The leaders of that viperous system must be responsible for the death of Christ. They must reject him. We Gentiles do not like the scriptures that say Jesus came only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel (Mat 15:24). The reason was so the house of Israel alone would be responsible for his murder. He would take the kingdom from that house and give it to another nation.
Jesus must be killed.
To be sure, only this would finish the transgression of the Jews and Jerusalem. Dispensational doctrine says the Jews confused God’s plan by their rejection of the Messiah. Of course, this is not true. It is a false doctrine. Albeit, God’s plan was the Jews must kill the Messiah.
Jesus must be raised again the third day. No other day would do. It could not happen on the second day or the fourth. It must be the third day — the sixteenth day of the month. As necessary as it was to go to Jerusalem, to suffer of the religious leaders, to be killed, it was also a must to be raised the third day. Why? Why the third day?
The Jewish thinking of day counting is called “inclusive reckoning.”
That means Friday, the day of the crucifixion was day 1. The Sabbath day was day 2. Then, the first day of the week, resurrection day, was day 3. Jesus must rise this day. No other day would do.
There are some truths about the resurrection we need to understand. We need to know why the third day or the sixteenth day of the month.

2. 10TH DAY, 14TH DAY, 15TH DAY, 16TH DAY
A. 14th day
Moses had instructed the nation of Israel to take the lamb the 10th day.
Exodus 12:3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
The entire nation was to kill the lamb the 14th day and place the blood on the door of each house, and they were to eat the entire lamb. Certainly, the Lord said he would pass through the nation and destroy the firstborn in the land. Also, for those who had taken the lamb into their homes, applied its blood, and eaten the lamb, the Lord said he would pass over that house. The plague would not come upon that house.
Exodus 12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
The lamb was slain. The blood was applied and the lamb was placed in the tomb of their bellies.
The Father presented the Lamb of God to the house of God — the house of Israel — on the 10th day. (It is important we understand what Jesus meant when he said, “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel” [Mat 15:24]. Therefore, the house of Israel alone would be responsible for his rejection and murder.) Without a doubt, the father slew the Lamb on the 14th day (Isa 53:1-10). “Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him” By all means, the Lamb was slain on the 14th day and upon those who placed the blood upon their house and ate the Lamb, the Lord God would and does indeed pass over.

Pharaoh, on the fourteenth day before sunrise, called Moses and said, “….get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the LORD.”
On the 14th day, before sunrise, Jesus received a call from the devil (Pharaoh) exactly as Moses received a call from Pharaoh.
Ephesians 4:8-10
8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
Colossians 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Pharaoh said to Moses, you win. The devil said to Jesus, you win. Jesus took what had been given him by the Father losing none but the son of perdition (John 17:12).

B. 15th day
Because the blood was applied to the house and the lamb was in the belly, Moses, led God’s people from Egypt on the 15th day. Pharaoh’s kingdom was plundered. God’s people plundered Egypt taking gold, silver, and any valuables they desired.
Because the blood of the Lamb of God is applied to our house and because the Lamb of God is in our belly — our spirit — we leave Egypt on the 15th day. Jesus went to hell to fetch us! For each of us, Jesus went to hell. He is constantly pulling lives from the fire.
Jude 1:23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
When one is pulled from hell the kingdom of this world is plundered. Gold, silver, and riches are pulled from Satan’s kingdom and added to the kingdom of God!
Though out of Egypt, Moses and Israel were not delivered from Egypt. They had activated the body and blood but must be baptized in the Red Sea and baptized in the Spirit (cloud) as 1Co 10:1-4 says. The Lord told Moses he was not finished with Pharaoh yet. Pharaoh must be destroyed. The Lord told Moses he would harden Pharaoh’s heart one more time. Pharaoh would send his army to destroy Israel, but the people would see God’s salvation.
Pharaoh sent his army. The cloud set between God’s people and Pharaoh’s army. Moses lifted his rod and said,
Exodus 14:13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

C. 16th day
A strong east wind blew all the night of the 15th day, and the sea parted. Undoubtedly, the way was opened to the Promised Land. So, they went through the Red Sea on the 16th day. Moreover, they were delivered from Egypt on the sixteenth day!
Upon all houses that applied the blood of Christ a visit from the death angel upon that generation would be avoided. So, they would be delivered from the bondage of Judaism and religion. The generation of Egypt and Sodom would be judged, and their generation did not pass (Mat 23:36; 24:34).
Revelation 11:8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
Christ was presented to the house of Israel by the Father on the 10th day. Then, Christ was slain on the 14th day of the month. Next, the wind of the Holy Spirit blew in that tomb upon his dead body the night of the 15th day. Moreover, on the 16th day UP FROM THE GRAVE HE AROSE! The way was opened to our promised land. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead will also quicken our mortal bodies.
The blood of Jesus Christ will get us out of Egypt. The resurrection of Christ delivered us from Egypt and destroyed the devil!
We need the blood. The blood happens on the 14th day. We confess with our mouths that he is Lord. But it’s the 16th day that we believe in our hearts that God raised him from the dead!

Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
The Roman soldier confessed, “Truly this was the Son of God” (Mat 27:54). Many confess today Jesus is the “Son of God.” But resurrection causes us to “believe in thine heart.” John witnessed the miracles of Jesus Christ, but John believed when he saw (peered) at the linen clothes and napkin.
3. JESUS MUST RISE FROM THE GRAVE THE THIRD DAY
There is proof of Christ’s resurrection, which is, the sepulchre was found empty. He was not there, and, if so, they must tell us where he was or we conclude him risen.
A. It was the sign to the enemies of Christ.
The enemies of Christ demanded a sign from heaven to prove he was the Messiah (King). Obviously, the signs he had already given were not sufficient to them. Also, some people will never believe no matter what they see or hear. Undoubtedly, Jesus told them he would not perform tricks for them (devil in the wilderness, these were his sons [John 8:44]). Those who would not believe other signs were referred to the prophet Jonas. Christ’s resurrection not only proved he was indeed the Messiah. It also proved they murdered the Messiah. They knew they were guilty.
Matthew 16:1 The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven.
Matthew 16:4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.
Luke 11:29 And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.
Luke 11:30 For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.

B. Christ’s resurrection proves the acceptance of the blood of Christ as the Lamb.
Jesus must rise from the dead to prove the acceptance of his blood by the Father. Indeed, the blood of Christ washes and cleanses us from our sins. Certainly, that gives us the assurance of forgiveness for any and all sins. Is this only so we can go to heaven when we die? No. The thought is to move us on into the abundant life Christ came to give (John 10:10).
1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Revelation 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood
We are to move on from sin — from Egypt and bondage.
C. The assurance of the resurrection on the last day.
Not only was Christ raised from the dead, but we have assurance every person who applies the blood and eats the Lamb will indeed one day experience the resurrection.

1 Corinthians 15:13-19
13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:
14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.
16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.
19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
If there is no resurrection then Christ was not raised. So, if Christ was not raised then this entire thing is in vain. However, if Christ was indeed raised then we are each faced with a dilemma. Where are we in our relation to him?
I was playing golf with a man who became and is a dear friend. At that time he was not serving the Lord, but he was being drawn to the Lord. In our time together that day on the golf course we began speaking about the things of God. I told him I had come to this conclusion. If a person could prove to me the entire Christian thing was a lie, Jesus was not the Son of God and did not rise from the dead, I would continue to live my life exactly as I do now. The reason is because it works. However, I know because he was raised from the dead, then life works abundantly. Today that man is the pastor of his own church.
