Scriptures: James 3:9-10, 1 Peter 3:10, James 3:4-5, Genesis 48:9, 16, Genesis 27:4, 12, 19, 28, 28, 29, 33, Numbers 6:22-26

We have been talking about the Power of Words in our own lives. Today I want to talk about how words can bring an irrevocable blessing upon people.

(NIV) James 3:9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness.

(KJV) James 3:10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Notice we both bless and curse with our words. It is wrong to, with one breath, praise and bless God and with the next curse people. We should bless and praise God and bless and praise people.

Notice the way we bless and praise people should be similar to the way we bless and praise God.

THE WORD CURSING does not mean using four-letter words.

It means wishing bad for and upon people. It means talking negatively about people, and it means causing someone to be seen in a bad light by others by pointing out a fault or being judgmental.

Irrevocable Blessing

THE WORD BLESSING (PRAISE NIV) is eulogia in Greek.

It’s pronounced yoo-log-ee’-ah and means praise, use polished language, invocation of blessing of benefit.

Notice the word blessing (KJV) has to do with what we say – the use of language. It includes praise. In other words, a blessing is not a blessing until it is spoken and includes praise.

We need to speak positively (praise) toward others just as we would speak positively toward God. We need to polish what we say to others. This will invoke a blessing of benefit upon others.

I know praising someone similar to how we praise God is somewhat foreign to us, but think about it. How do you feel when someone praises you and blesses you for something you did? It feels good, right? You want to do more. You are energized.

1 Peter 3:10 For, Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech.

If we want a good life, we must learn how to use our tongues correctly. We must learn to include praise. We cannot, with one breath bless our children, then turn around and tell them they will never amount to anything. Also, we must find a way to praise them. We cannot bless our marriage and then turn and find faults and criticize our spouse. Instead, find a way to praise him or her. You cannot bless your business and then turn and demean the employees. You must bless them and praise them. Also, you cannot bless your health and then turn and say things like I will never be healed. Bless your body with the word of God and praise your body for what it can do well. Everything responds to praise.

Irrevocable Blessing

IT’S NOT ENOUGH TO AVOID SAYING anything negative.

Take it one step further and begin declaring and invoking God’s blessings upon your life. It’s not enough to only think about it, believe you are blessed, or even read about how God wants to bless you. A blessing is not a blessing until it is pronounced and declared and includes praise.

WORDS GIVE DIRECTION TO LIFE.

(Amplified) James 3:4 Likewise, look at the ships: though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the impulse of the helmsman determines.

James 3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and it can boast of great things. See how much wood {or} how great a forest a tiny spark can set ablaze!

The tongue is compared to a ship’s rudder directing a ship’s course. Even so the tongue directs the course of lives. It has the potential to do great things, or it can cause great damage. We can set the course of lives for success, or set lives on fire like a piece of wood.

WE PARENTS CAN SET THE COURSE of the lives of our children.

As business owners and executives, you can set the course of your employees. With the power of our words, we have the ability to affect the course of life over anyone in which we have influence. Every one of us has influence upon someone. You may not be a parent or business owner or even a leader, but you have someone who looks to you.

Irrevocable Blessing

You teenagers have friends you influence. Teenage girls especially have a tendency to get together and speak negative things about people and parents. I want you to know you are only bringing bad things upon your own lives. You are stopping God from doing something wonderful for you. It is so important you only speak blessings.

EVERY PERSON NEEDS WHAT THE BIBLE CALLS “THE BLESSING.”

The Blessing is when somebody important to you believes in you and blesses your life by pronouncing and declaring a blessing over you. Every person needs this. God is counting on his people to give it to the people in which we have influence.

In the Bible, people understood the power of the blessing. The children would come to their fathers and the father would lay his hands upon them and speak loving faith-filled words about their futures. The children longed for the blessing. They understood the power of those words. They realized those words had the ability to bring success, prosperity, health, and abundance into their future.

There is a powerful story in Genesis chapter 48 about Joseph bringing his children to Joseph’s father. Joseph’s father was Jacob who had his name changed to Israel at a wrestling match with an angel. Jacob told the angel he would not let the angel go until the angel blessed him. The angel spoke words over Jacob and Jacob’s entire future changed. Jacob had an uncanny understanding of the power of words. How many people would wrestle with an angel? But then, how many people would not let the angel go until the angel blessed them?

Irrevocable Blessing

Jacob, now Israel in Genesis 48, had never seen Joseph’s boys because Joseph lived in Egypt. Israel asked who the boys were. Look at the first thing Israel (Jacob) said when he learned who they were.

Genesis 48:9  “They are the sons God has given me here,” Joseph said to his father. Then Israel said, “Bring them to me so I may bless them.”

Israel said to bring the boys to him so he could speak into their futures. He knew the power of words and the blessing. This was a big event.

Israel laid his hands upon Joseph’s children and blessed them. Here is a part of what he said.

Genesis 48:16 the Angel who has delivered me from all harm – may he bless these boys. May they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they increase greatly upon the earth.

I was in the delivery room when both of my grandchildren, Jack and Max, were born. I held both of them in my arms within their first thirty minutes of life, and I blessed them both. Today I continue to bless them every opportunity I get.

THIS BLESSING WAS SO DESIRED sometimes the children would fight over it.

They were not fighting over money or the family business. They were fighting over the words of blessing from someone they loved and respected.

Irrevocable Blessing

In Genesis chapter 27 there is the story about how Jacob (discussed previously) wanted the blessing so badly he lied and tricked his father Isaac into giving it to him instead of his older brother Esau. Jacob’s father Isaac was very old and practically blind. One day Isaac told Esau to go hunting, kill some game, prepare it, and bring it to him. Isaac would then give Esau the blessing.

Genesis 27:4 Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing before I die.

Jacob’s mother and Isaac’s wife, Rebekah, heard Isaac’s instructions to Esau. Rebekah loved Jacob more (which wasn’t right). She told Jacob to kill some goats and they would trick Isaac into blessing Jacob instead. Jacob said something I thought was very interesting to his mother.

Genesis 27:12 What if my father touches me? I would appear to be tricking him and would bring down a curse on myself rather than a blessing.”

This is so powerful. Jacob said my father has the power to bless me or to curse me. Think about this. Our parents have the ability to bless our lives or curse our lives. We, as parents, have the power to bless our children or curse our children with our words. No matter if we realize it or not, our words are affecting our children’s future either for good or for bad. There is power in the words we speak.

Irrevocable Blessing

OUR WORDS TODAY CARRY THE SAME power Isaac’s words carried then.

We need to always encourage our children and bless them. We need to tell them they can accomplish anything. Too often I hear a parent being negative. “Why can’t you make better grades in school?” “Why can’t you hit the ball like someone else?” “How are you ever going to amount to anything?” We curse their lives with negative, unpolished words.

I am not saying we can’t correct our children, but if all you do is say discouraging words and belittling words, you will destroy your child’s self-image. You will open up a door for the enemy to bring destruction into their lives. I know people today who suffer from words their parents spoke over them as a child.

MOST CHILDREN GET THEIR IDEAS of what God is like from their parents and especially from the father.

If they get the idea God is mean and critical and belittling, the child will grow up with a distorted view of God. But if you display the love and encouragement of God, your child will see God in a healthy way.

My children were not perfect, but we never emphasized their imperfections. We emphasized what they did well. We told them they could do anything they set their minds to do, and we told them they were smart. Also, we blessed them. We still do this today. We tell them how proud we are of them, and we do this to our grandchildren as well. Furthermore, we are always telling our grandchildren how great they are. We are setting the rudder of their lives with our words.

Irrevocable Blessing

Some of you have children who are grown and maybe live a distance away. You should pick up the phone and tell them how proud you are of them and how much you love them. You will be amazed how this will add direction to their lives.

In the story in Genesis 27 about Jacob and Esau, Jacob put on Esau’s clothes, put some goat’s hair on his hands and neck, and went to his dad. Isaac asked who it was and Jacob said it was Esau.

Genesis 27:19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game so that you may give me your blessing.”

Children want their parent’s blessing. Jacob convinced Isaac he was Esau and Isaac gave Jacob the blessing. Look at what he said.

Genesis 27:28 May God give you of heaven’s dew and of earth’s richness – an abundance of grain and new wine.

Genesis 27:29 May nations serve you and peoples bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed and those who bless you be blessed.

Notice Jacob’s father declared great things over Jacob. He spoke into his future. He spoke polished words blessing Jacob’s life.

Irrevocable Blessing

Not long after this, Esau came back. When it was discovered Jacob had deceived Isaac, the Bible says Isaac began to shake violently and Esau wept. Isaac said something so necessary for us to understand and pass on to our children. Note how the NLB says this.

Genesis 27:33  (Isaac begins to tremble noticeably.) Isaac: “Then who is it who was just here with venison, and I have already eaten it and blessed him with irrevocable blessing?

There is power in our words. There is a supernatural power released for your children when you declare and pronounce an irrevocable blessing upon them. It cannot be changed.

Use your words to speak blessings over people. Declare great things for the future of your children and grandchildren.

ALSO HUSBANDS your words affect your wife.

Bless your wife with your words. She needs your approval. She has given her life to love you and care for you. You will cause terrible problems if you are always finding faults. There are so many women today living defeated and depressed lives because their husbands refuse to bless them with their mouths. You are speaking death and destruction to your marriage. Instead, tell your wife you love her and appreciate her. O Delbert. My wife knows I love her. I told her when we got married forty years ago. You need to tell her you love her and how she is the best thing that ever happened to you today.

Irrevocable Blessing

JOKE:

An 85-year-old couple died in a car crash. The wife had kept them in good health by insisting on eating bran muffins and doing exercise. When they got to heaven, St. Peter took them to their mansion which had a beautiful kitchen, Jacuzzi, everything. The man asked how much it would cost. St. Peter said, “Nothing. This was heaven.”

St. Peter then took them to the backyard where there was a championship-style golf course that changed every week to a different course. The man asked again how much it would cost. Peter said again it would cost nothing because this was heaven.

Peter then took them to the clubhouse where there was a lavish buffet full of food from all over the earth. The man asked again how much it would cost. Peter said again it would cost nothing. The man asked where were the low-fat and low-cholesterol tables. Peter said there were none because in heaven no one would ever get fat or sick.

The man went into a rage, threw his hat down, and began jumping on it. He looked at his wife and said, “This is all your fault! If it had not been for your blasted bran muffins and treadmill, I could have been here ten years ago!” Of course, this was a joke and we men need to appreciate the fact our wives care.

Irrevocable Blessing

WIVES, your husbands need your words of blessing.

He needs your approval. He has given his life for you. If you are negative and critical, you will cause terrible problems. You will speak death and destruction to your marriage and happiness.

I will never forget as long as I live my coming home one day from work. I don’t know if Judy had read a book or listened to a tape or had been talking to the Lord. She sat me down and told me how well I had taken care of her. She told me how much she appreciated the provisions I had provided and the life I helped provide for her. How do you think this blessed me?

WORDS EITHER VALUE A PERSON or devalue a person.

We appreciate and value people with words of blessing. We devalue or depreciate a person with words of criticism, fault-finding, and cursing. Words are powerful. Words bring irrevocable results.

When I dedicated Max, Bonnie, my daughter, asked me to speak the following verses over him.

Numbers 6:22 The LORD said to Moses,

Numbers 6:23 “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the IsraelitesSay to them:

Notice the way God says to bless someone is to SAY TO THEM. We bless people with our words. A blessing is not a blessing until it is spoken.

Irrevocable Blessing

What kind of words does God want us to say?

Numbers 6:24-26

24 The LORD bless you and keep you;

25 the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you;

26 the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.

Speak words of victory and faith. Declare God’s goodness. Declare words of God’s favor, and declare God’s face is smiling upon a person. Blessing is when we declare God’s goodness upon people.

I WANT TO DECLARE SOME GOOD THINGS over your life today.

Some of you have had all sorts of negative things spoken over you. I want to bless you today. How many will receive a blessing today?

Bow your heads and receive this blessing from me.

I declare in the name of Jesus, you are blessed with God’s wisdom and you have clear direction for your life.

I declare you are blessed with creativity, with courage, with ability, and with abundance.

And, I declare you are blessed with a strong will, with self-control, and with self-discipline.

I declare you are blessed with a great family, with good friends, with good health, and with faith, favor, and fulfillment.

I declare you are blessed with success, with supernatural strength, with promotion, and with divine protection.

And, I declare you are blessed with an obedient heart and with a positive outlook on life.

I declare any curse ever spoken over you, any negative or evil word ever coming against you, I declare in the name of Jesus the curse and negative word are broken now.

And, I declare you are blessed in the city. You are blessed in the country. You are blessed when you go in, and you are blessed when you come out.

I declare everything you put your hands to do is going to prosper and succeed.

I declare you are blessed.

If you receive the blessing then shout to the Lord.

Irrevocable Blessing

NOW HERE IS WHAT I WANT TO DO in closing.

I want you to huddle with your family. If you have children in other classes go get them. Husbands bless your wives and wives bless your husbands. Parents bless your children.

Look around you and if there are people who do not have family, connect with them and bless them. If you without family or friends are not comfortable with this, then come to the front. One of the elders will bless you.

Let me challenge you to do the same thing to everyone you influence. Learn to speak this blessing over your own life and to your future. Polish your words so they always bless. Remember a blessing is not a blessing until it is spoken. Use your words to bless. Give the blessing to your children and grandchildren. Declare God’s favor. It will help you experience a new life of victory and abundance planned by God for you.
