Communion Remember This Is… video audio notes. Jesus instituted the New Covenant with Communion. He said to remember, This is… my body. This cup IS the New Covenant. But a piece of bread and a cup? Really? But how does this work? Your piece of bread is to connect you with Jesus. However, it will plug you into remembering him. Of course, our covenant is through the blood of Jesus Christ.

Communion – Remember This Is…
Scriptures: Luke 22:19-20, Exodus 12:1-3, Luke 22:19, Luke 22:19, Luke 22:19, Isaiah 53:5, 1 Peter 2:24, Luke 22:20, 1 Corinthians 11:23-25
According to our Gregorian calendar, this is the last Sunday of this year. I don’t know how much attention God pays to our calendar system, but for us, it’s how we order our lives, and it’s the last Sunday of this year. I wanted to end the year with corporate communion. Of course, communion is provided for us every week, but it’s been a while since we’ve enjoyed communion as a church body.
Today, I will give us a very brief teaching about communion, and then we will receive the body and the blood of Christ and partake and enjoy these together, hopefully with a deeper understanding of what we’re doing
Luke 22:19-20 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “THIS IS my body given for you; Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “THIS cup IS the NEW COVENANT in my blood, which is poured out for you.
Communion – Remember This Is…
The time of the year was Easter. Here, Jesus instituted the New Covenant. What we call the sacrament of Communion replaced the Old Covenant. The Old Covenant aspect of New Testament Communion is called Passover. Passover was instituted at the last plague coming upon Egypt, as the children of God were delivered from Egyptian bondage. This was the identical time of the year Jesus instituted the New Covenant.
Exodus 12:1-3 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, “This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year. Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household.
As you can see, their calendar, or God’s calendar, isn’t the same as ours. A lamb (or a goat – Gen 12:5) was taken from the flocks, kept for four days, slaughtered, prepared with very specific instructions, and eaten by the household. To me, it would be great if our year began at Easter when a resurrected newness of life covered the planet in springtime. This was the season and time of year God chose to bring his Lamb, the Lamb of God, kept for this day, slaughtered on the cross, and prepared by God specifically for his household to eat.
Communion – Remember This Is…
A church is made from many households, but corporately, we are the household and family of God as we together participate in Communion, being delivered from the bondage of hell and eternal death.
Luke 22:19 And he took bread, GAVE THANKS…
What was Jesus giving thanks for? The first thing we should do when partaking of the Lord’s body is give thanks. Take a moment and thank God for life, your salvation, your family, your friends, and whatever comes to your mind. I believe this is what Jesus was doing. Though he was about to experience the bleakest time of his life, he took bread and gave thanks. We should always be able to find reasons to thank God no matter what we are experiencing. Teach your children to be thankful to God. Life is so much better when thankful.
Luke 22:19 And he took bread, gave thanks, and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “THIS IS MY BODY GIVEN FOR YOU…
The piece of bread you will be given is a part of his body specifically given for you. Think of your piece, your wafer of bread, as unique. It’s not simply an unleavened wafer. It’s your wafer. Somehow, of all the wafers ever made, this wafer found its way into your hand. It is given to you. Begin to see how unique your wafer is. Your wafer is your connection with Jesus. As each took their piece, Jesus said, “This is my body given for you!” Their piece was special.

Luke 22:19 And he took bread, gave thanks, and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.”
Your piece of bread is to connect you with Jesus. It will plug you into remembering him. Take a moment and recall aspects you know about Jesus. Of course, I remember the cross, but I also remember the manger. I remember the young boy in the temple. Then I remember his baptism by John the Baptist, and I see Jesus laughing and his joy.
Also, I remember his remarkable teachings. I remember his compassion for those hurting, grieving, tormented, physically impaired, and sick, and I remember him crying at Lazarus’ tomb and over the city of Jerusalem. And, I remember Gethsemane, his arrest, being scourged, the cross, and the death. But I also remember the resurrection! Take a moment and remember. Connect with Jesus.
Communion – Remember This Is…
It’s at the point of Communion when I’m alone in private, I remember the scourging of the Lord’s body; I take a moment to speak to my body parts and receive healing for my physical body.
Isaiah 53:5 But he was pierced FOR our transgressions, he was crushed FOR our iniquities; the PUNISHMENT that brought us peace was upon him, and BY HIS WOUNDS WE ARE HEALED.
1 Peter 2:24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; BY HIS WOUNDS YOU HAVE BEEN HEALED.
His wounds provided healing. I begin with my brain and my mind. I say out loud something along these lines, “I have a sound mind physically, mentally, and emotionally. Also, I have no neurological problems. I do not have dementia, Alzheimer’s, or Parkinson’s disease (my father suffered from these). There are neither tumors nor aneurysms. I have a sound mind and a great memory.”
I proceed speaking in the same way to my spinal column, my left and right eyes and vision, sinuses, left and right ears and hearing, my mouth and teeth, my larynx and for a pleasant speaking voice and good vocabulary, my esophagus, heart (heart disease, blood pressure, cholesterol), lungs (left and right lobes), stomach, large intestines, colon, kidneys, liver, pancreas, gall bladder, prostate, male organs, joints (arthritis), and in case I missed anything I say, “I am healed and I am whole from head to toe in the name of Jesus Christ.” Nearly every Sunday morning I do this and have for years.
Communion – Remember This Is…
The only time I don’t is when I’m not here on Sunday. We won’t do this today as we experience the Lord’s body corporately, but I encourage you to find a time and place to speak healing to your body.
The bread, or body, part of Communion is to be done to remember Jesus. Connect to Jesus. Plug into Jesus.
Then Jesus said,
Luke 22:20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “THIS CUP IS THE NEW COVENANT IN MY BLOOD, which is poured out for you.
Jesus poured out his blood. It wasn’t spilled or taken. He poured it out for a purpose. The cup symbolized his blood and replaced the Old Covenant in the same way as the bread/body replaced the Passover lamb. When I drink it, I state that I accept the New Covenant and am in covenant with Jesus Christ. I am saying I fulfill my part and expect Jesus Christ to fulfill his part. The cup and juice are to connect/plug you into a covenantal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Communion – Remember This Is…
In the scriptures, serious covenants are made through the blood of sacrificed animals: the Noahic Covenant, the Abrahamic Covenant, the Old/Mosaic Covenant, and the Davidic Covenant. The Old Covenant was inaugurated with the Passover lamb and renewed yearly with blood. Our covenant is not with the blood of sheep and goats but through the blood of Jesus Christ, and it is renewed as often as you will.
1 Corinthians 11:23-25 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, WHENEVER YOU DRINK IT, in remembrance of me.”
(KJV) 1 Corinthians 11:25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, AS OFT AS YE DRINK IT, in remembrance of me.
It’s sad to me how many Christians seldom, some maybe never, renew their covenant with Jesus. The point is it’s whenever you drink it, not once a year. It’s as oft as ye drink it, not when the preacher decides. As I stated before, it’s usually weekly with me. It’s the first thing I do when arriving on Sunday mornings. As I drink the blood of the New Covenant, I say, “Lord, I am in covenant with you, the Father, and the Holy Spirit. I desire to fulfill my part of the covenant. Help me accomplish this. I know you will fulfill your part.”
Communion – Remember This Is…
I encourage each of you to experience the Lord’s body and the Lord’s blood frequently. It doesn’t need to be here or at a church. It can be at home or any place. Make it memorable, not a religious activity. Use it as a time to give thanks. Take time through the bread of his body to remember him. Don’t only remember his death but also his life, love, and compassion. Take time through the bread to bless your body. Take time through the blood of the New Covenant to remember you are in covenant with the God of the universe. He loves you and wants the best for you and your family.
With this said, let’s enjoy Communion with the Lord and with one another.
