Sadly, today it’s likely someone has spoken to you and will speak to your child like this. There was a time cussing was used only by sailors, prisoners, lumberjacks, ignorant or uneducated, trailer trash, sports jocks, shock jocks, and gangsters. Today educated college professors freely cuss our children.
We begin a new series today. It’s one I’ve never ventured into in all my years of preaching and teaching. It’s one I’ve personally never heard any preacher teach or talk about, so I’m on some new territory. I’ll be attempting to say things I’ve never said before, so if they don’t come out well give me mercy and say, “Bless his heart. He’s trying.”
The Apostle Paul during his third missionary journey asked a most interesting question to believers at Ephesus.
(KJV) Acts 19:2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost SINCE YE BELIEVED? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
Receiving the Holy Spirit isn’t my topic, but I do want to ask what I think is an interesting question. Please be honest and show with a display of raised hands so we will all know we are in a safe place and that no one can condemn us (or at least I hope no one will condemn us). Here’s the question: Have you cussed since you believed? Notice both my hands are up. Let’s take the question a little deeper. How many have really cussed since you believed? I mean something so filthy, maybe blasphemous, came out of your mouth it even shocked you? Raise your hand please if you have. Thank you for being honest. Now I can teach our series called CUSSING CHRISTIANS. It will deal with our personal character.

My goal overall is to get us thinking about cussing by talking about cussing. If we will simply think about cussing, we will do something about cussing. From what I’ve already heard, by simply saying we were going to do a series on cussing, many have already begun thinking about your cussing. My goal today is to show us how deeply cussing gets into us and begin considering how it poisons our lives and the lives around us.
I want to address a question to the women.
Ladies, do you feel it is “ladylike” and a good thing to cuss, using obscenities, profanities, and swearing? Do you know better? Have your children ever heard you cuss? Now I have a question for us men. Men, do you feel it is manly and makes you more of a man to cuss? Have your children ever heard you cuss? Are you proud they heard you? I hope not. Do we know better?
Colossians 3:7-8 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now YOU MUST RID YOURSELVES of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and FILTHY LANGUAGE FROM YOUR LIPS.
(MSG) Colossians 3:7-8 It wasn’t long ago that you were doing all that stuff and not knowing any better. BUT YOU KNOW BETTER NOW, so make sure it’s all gone for good: bad temper, irritability, meanness, PROFANITY, DIRTY TALK.
Do we know better? Sure we do. Then why do we allow ourselves to do it?

Does anyone feel as I do, profanity has gone too far in the movies and now invading and violating our televisions in our LIVING rooms? Do you think this has an influence on us and our children? Instead of us salting society, we allow it to decay us. Have you ever heard people cuss and swear in public maybe around your family and you thought, “Why do you have to talk like that,” but then you got a check inside and said, “How dumb of me. I’ve talked the same way”?
Many of us have a PC – Personal Computer. If so you’ve likely had a virus in your PC. If you haven’t, you’ve heard of viruses and know it’s bad and will damage the operation of the computer and worse. A PC virus is malware (malicious software) and becomes a virus “germ” when it opens in your PC. Unexpected ads can pop up. It can be contagious contaminating every program, wiping information, sending out filthy malicious emails to everyone on your contact lists, etc. It can devastate your OS – Operating System. Sometimes vile nasty pornographic images pop up. Judy had a horrible malware virus not long ago. She became angry! Horrible, nasty vulgar pornographic images were coming out of her PC. She said, and I quote, “I’m ready to throw this thing against the wall.” Her computer was defiled.
This is what happens to us when our PC – Personal Character – becomes infected with malicious viruses of obscenities, profanities, swearing, cursing, etc.
If we’re going to truly address cussing, I believe the first issue we must admit is this: when profanities and obscenities come out of us it reveals Personal Character Defilement Syndrome (PCDS). Something nasty is in us. The viruses affect our operating system and more – mind, spirit, and soul. Stuff pops up and out of us showing a defiled PC – Personal Character. Pornographic words about body parts, sexual acts, and body excretions come out of our mouths. (Think about that.) We blaspheme the name of Jesus and Father God. We send defiling messages full of contaminating infectious viruses out to our contact lists and anyone else in hearing distance.

We even send infectious viruses to our own children contaminating them. The words further fuel and are connected with extreme anger, hate, rage, slander, and violence. Have you ever noticed if you don’t cuss, you won’t become as angry, and are less likely to strike or throw something? Like Judy wanted to do to her PC, when you hear this sick verbiage coming out of someone, you want to throw them against the wall. This is exactly what people want to do to us when we vomit this sick virus out on them. It reveals our PC – Personal Character – is defiled.
(KJV) Matthew 15:18 But those THINGS WHICH PROCEED OUT OF THE MOUTH COME FORTH FROM THE HEART; and THEY DEFILE THE MAN.
(NIV) Matthew 15:18 But the THINGS THAT COME OUT OF THE MOUTH COME FROM THE HEART, and these MAKE A MAN ‘UNCLEAN.’
(MSG) Matthew 15:18-19 But WHAT COMES OUT OF THE MOUTH GETS ITS START IN THE HEART. It’s FROM THE HEART THAT WE VOMIT UP EVIL arguments, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, lies, and CUSSING.
Cussing is far deeper than a mind thing. Cussing is a heart thing. Jesus explained how things that come out of the mouth lead to more vile things. Notice from where this virus comes. Does it come from the mind? Or, does it come from the heart? The CPU – Central Processing Unit – is the central aspect and heart of your computer. The Central Processing Unit (CPU) of your being is the heart. Cussing, obscenities, profanities, swearing, etc. don’t come from the mind. They come from the heart. It’s deeper than the OS – mind. This is why it’s so difficult to stop. The virus is in the heart.
Some of us are “Casual Cussing Christians.” Obscenities, profanities, cussing, swearing, etc. are a large part of your vocabulary and are used in your environment daily. It’s so casually common with you that sometimes you’re not aware you’re cussing. Others of us are perhaps not as infected as we once were. We’re in remission, but sometimes we relapse when something “causes” us to cuss. These are “Cause-ual Cussing Christians.” Sudden aggravations, sudden emotions, disappointments, etc. pull the cuss trigger and like a pistol, or cannon, it fires expelling from the mouth and we are unable to retrieve it before it does its damage.

People who casually cuss also cause-ually cuss. Many of us have never really thought about it, but if you have cussed since you believed, in which category would you be today: a Casual Cussing Christian, or a Cause-ual Cussing Christian? Are either good? The good news is casual cussing is far easier to stop than cause-ual cussing.
When surfing the World Wide Web in the cyber world you will encounter malware viruses as we’ve said.
You must have what is called a firewall and malware virus protection to guard your Personal Computer’s CPU from being infected. The firewall and the malware virus protection work together to protect the heart of your Personal Computer. What your immune system is to your physical body, a firewall, and virus protection is to your computer.
In the real world, your PC – Personal Character needs firewall and malware virus protection to guard your heart – CPU. We also need to clean the heart of the viruses already there. I’m about to read to you a very well-known and often-used scripture, but what I want us to notice is the following verse it points to.
Proverbs 4:23 Above all else, GUARD YOUR HEART, for it is the wellspring of life.
Proverbs 4:24 Put away PERVERSITY FROM YOUR MOUTH; KEEP CORRUPT TALK FAR FROM YOUR LIPS.
The heart is your CPU – the Central Processing Unit – the wellspring of your life. So, it’s where your life begins. By all means, if your heart is defiled with a virus at the wellspring, your entire life is polluted. What I want us to see is the first firewall layer of protection for our heart is to put away perversity and corrupt talk. By doing this you protect and clean up your heart. The very first thing we must do to have a pure heart (CPU) and a life operating at full capacity is put away perversity, cussing, swearing, profanity, obscenities, etc. Your life will be better if you stop cussing, but how do you do this?

I need to stop for today. We have much more to talk about, but do your role models and the people you truly admire fluidly cuss, swear, use obscenities, and profanities, and include God and Jesus Christ as exclamations for their profanities? Probably they do not. If so you may consider new role models. Why don’t they? What state of mind and attitude are we usually in when we cuss? It’s usually not a good one. Here’s my point. People who elevate to the position of a role model maintain good attitudes. Attitude is connected with cussing. I’ve learned the best way to clean up my cussing is to clean up my attitude.
I’ve learned if I accept life’s aggravations by realizing there will always be daily aggravations, I don’t cuss.
If I can find humor in daily frustrations, I laugh instead of cuss. It can feel good to cuss, but it feels much better knowing I didn’t. It feels much better not being in the state of mind and attitude causing me to cuss. I want to become not only a person who doesn’t cuss. I want to be a person who doesn’t need to cuss. How about you? By cleaning up my attitude, I put perversity and corrupt talk far from my mouth. This will clean up my heart. Jesus said,
Luke 6:45 “The good man out of the good treasure OF HIS HEART brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the EVIL TREASURE brings forth what is evil; FOR HIS MOUTH SPEAKS FROM THAT WHICH FILLS HIS HEART.
I want to be a good man with a heart filled with good treasure.
