Possessing Your Jericho sermon

Possessing Your Jericho involves understanding the spiritual lessons from the biblical story of Jericho’s fall. The narrative emphasizes the importance of obedience and faith in overcoming life’s challenges, symbolized by the “walls” of Jericho. The Hebrew word for Jericho, Yeriychow, meaning “fragrant,” suggests capturing the essence of an abundant life. The sermon notes highlight that God’s instructions, like those given to Joshua, may seem unconventional but are crucial for spiritual victory. By following prophetic guidance and maintaining faith, believers can overcome barriers and experience the “fragrance” of prosperity and fulfillment. This process requires perseverance, as exemplified by the Israelites’ repeated marches around Jericho, symbolizing persistence in faith and action.

The children of Israel came to the Jordan river the second time, but this time they decided to Arise In Violence and possess the kingdom. They went through the Jordan – Spirit and Word. You must Arise in Violence if you make the decision to be a spiritual person and a person who understands God’s Word. They were circumcised – presented their hearts to the Lord. You must Arise In Violence to truly allow God to deal with your heart. They were ready to POSSESS THE KINGDOM. They were ready to claim for themselves the abundant life. However, like most things in life worth having, it wouldn’t come easy. Jesus said the good things of the kingdom must be taken with violence.

Possessing Your Jericho sermon video audio notes

Matthew 11:12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

Of course, this is not physical violence as seen in the Middle East today. Jesus told Pilate that physical violence was not the makeup of his kingdom.

John 18:36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place.”

Though today’s theology attempts to depict the kingdom of God as a coming physical war called Armageddon, Jesus said this was not the nature of his kingdom. The kingdom is a spiritual kingdom and the violence is a spiritual violence.

Today we want to talk about POSSESSING YOUR JERICHO. The fall of Jericho is a lesson in the obedience necessary to take the Jerichos of our lives, but it’s more than that. It’s a lesson in the prophetic. The Hebrew word translated Jericho is Yeriychow (Strong’s #3405), pronounced yr-re-i-choand means fragrant. (PA– USE) How many of us would like to capture the fragrance of life? Do you enjoy the smell of a rose, the taste of honey, or the giggle of a child? How about the fragrance of health or the aroma of prosperity? How about the smell of a new car/truck? Life is full of the wonderful fragrance of the abundant life.

We were watching TV the other day and they were showing the poverty of a third-world country. I told my wife a picture does not do justice to poverty. There is a smell of poverty. There is a sound of poverty. If you have ever been in a real poverty environment, you know what I mean. God wants us to enjoy the fragrance of the abundant life, but sometimes as it was with Jericho, the fragrance is shut up tight.

Possessing Your Jericho sermon video audio notes

Joshua 6:1 Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.

Have you ever wanted the fragrance from life, but it was tightly shut up? In fact, things may have stunk.

Most of those with Joshua had never seen a walled city like Jericho. It seemed impossible to take. Most believers have never seen the abundance God has awaiting them. In fact, to most believers, it seems there is absolutely no way to possess it. It’s not true!

According to archeological finds, Jericho was surrounded by a system of two massive stone walls. The outer wall was 6 feet thick and about 20 feet high. The inner wall was about 12 ft. thick and was 30 ft. high. The problem was they had a city to conquer, but there were some extremely huge barriers in the way. It was because of those barriers the previous generation decided to live in the wilderness.

Deuteronomy 1:28 Where can we go? Our brothers have made us lose heart. They say, ‘The people are stronger and taller than we are; the cities are large, with walls up to the sky. We even saw the Anakites there.’

God wants you to exceed the life of your parents. Because something looks impossible, it is not impossible when you are in the kingdom. Jesus said all things are possible. He wants you to live at a higher level. Don’t allow Jericho’s barriers to stop you.

Joshua 6:2 Then the LORD said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men.

Joshua had encountered the captain of the LORD’S host (Josh 5:15) and received a prophetic word. I love the way the Living Bible records this verse.

Joshua 6:2 But the Lord said to Joshua, “Jericho and its king and all its mighty warriors are already defeated, for I have given them to you!

The Lord said it was already a done deal. The prophetic word would bring victory. I want to encourage you to get a prophetic word if you don’t have one and if you do have one, get it out and see what instructions are given you. Your FRAGRANCE OF LIFE is in your prophetic words.

1 Timothy 1:18 Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight,

1 Timothy 1:19 holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith.

Notice a shipwrecked life comes from rejecting prophecies. God gives us prophecies to use as instructions to fight the enemy. Prophecies give us faith which we can hold. THE FRAGRANCE OF LIFE is in your prophecies.

Sometimes the instructions seem strange. How many saw the movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” with George Clooney? Everett, Pete, and Delmar had escaped the chain gang when they hitched a ride with a blind prophet on a pull-push railroad car. The old blind prophet gave them some strange instructions about going down a road with many “ob-stack-els.” He said, “You will see things wonderful to tell. You shall see a cow on the roof of a cotton house.” He also told them by going down the road they would experience salvation and they did. We want to show you the clip of how this worked out.

Possessing Your Jericho sermon video audio notes

Often the instructions from a prophetic word are strange, but in them come salvation. God’s instructions to Joshua were strange.

Joshua 6:3-5

3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days.

4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets.

5 When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have all the people give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the people will go up, every man straight in.”

Many times God’s instructions make no sense. I don’t want to get into all the instructions given to Joshua for Jericho. They were for taking Joshua’s Jericho. Each one of us will have our own set of instructions and they may be just as strange. Here are a few strange instructions from God’s word.

Matthew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Did those instructions make any sense to you the first time you heard it? It continues to be a difficult one for most believers. However, if you want the fragrance of life, you must do it. If you will notice, the people who enjoy the fragrance of joy and peace live according to those instructions.

Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

How about this one? If I will give my resources then I will be given back more. People with greedy and selfish hearts do not possess the kingdom. How is your heart when it comes to giving?

Mark 9:35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

It’s an interesting one. If we want to advance in the kingdom of God we must first serve even those who seem beneath us. Jesus washed the disciples’ feet. Sounds strange, doesn’t it? But, he was great in the kingdom. We need to serve others if we want blessed and fragrant-filled lives.

We could go on and on and on. The point is God’s ways are not our ways.

Isaiah 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

Isaiah 55:9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Possessing Your Jericho sermon video audio notes

We should look for strange instructions, for in them await the FRAGRANCE OF LIFE. Father God has our best interest in mind. Our Jerichos are already defeated if we will follow his instructions.

I want to encourage you today to take the prophecies given to you and reread them. Look for specific areas where the Lord gave you instructions perhaps you didn’t understand at the time. Do those instructions and watch your Jericho’s walls fall down flat.

I want to talk about a few of the principles we see in capturing – Jericho – the FRAGRANCE OF LIFE.

They were to compass Jericho (fragrance) once every day for six days and then seven times on the seventh day. The point I want us to see is Jericho walls did not fall on the first day, second day, third day…

Galatians 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Don’t faint. You may only need one more trip around you Jericho to possess the FRAGRANCE OF LIFE. Don’t stop now. They marched around that thing thirteen times. Don’t give up!

Joshua 6:4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets.

As we learned in chapter three, the Ark of the Covenant represents the presence of God. The Ark contained the golden pot of manna – faith in the supernatural provisions, the tables of stone – ways of God, and Aaron’s rod that budded – God’s authority (Heb 9:4). The Ark was covered with the mercy seat. God’s provisions, ways, and authority are always covered with his mercy.

Possessing Your Jericho sermon video audio notes

Your Jericho must be surrounded with your expecting God’s supernatural provision, surrounded with the ways of God written on your heart, and surrounded with God’s authority.

Learn God’s governmental order at home, work, church, and life. Then, it must all be covered with God’s mercy if THE FRAGRANCE OF LIFE is to be captured.

Joshua 6:9 The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding.

(NLT) Joshua 6:10 “Do not shout; do not even talk,” Joshua commanded. “Not a single word from any of you until I tell you to shout. Then shout!”

The trumpets were sounding all the time. Think about it. The trumpets began sounding and then the children of Israel began marching. The only sound heard for hours was the sound of the trumpets. Over and over, again and again, came the sound of the trumpets nonstop. No one spoke a word. The only thing heard were the trumpets. Then on the seventh day seven trips around Jericho. All day long nothing was heard but the sound of the trumpets.

The Hebrew word translated trumpets is showphar (Strong’s #7782). This was a curved ram’s horn and it sounded an unmistakable sound or a clear sound. The first use of showphar is in Exodus 19:16.

Exodus 19:16 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet [showphar] exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

Possessing Your Jericho sermon video audio notes

The sounding of the showphar always speaks of God voice.(PA– USE) As the children of Israel marched around Jericho, they were prophetically sounding the trumpet – the unmistakable clear sound of God to Jericho.

When we are acquiring our FRAGRANCE – Jericho – we are to constantly sound the prophetic trumpet. Jesus said to speak to the mountain.

Mark 11:23 “I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.

There is power in sounding the prophetic trumpet. The prophetic word should become our showphar. We mentioned earlier the scripture in 1 Timothy.

1 Timothy 1:18 Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight,

The prophetic word is used to war with by sounding it as a showphar. As we come against our Jerichos, we are to constantly speak the prophetic word clearly again and again. Speak it for hours on end. Speak it all day long. Don’t say anything else. Don’t listen to anyone else. Over and over and again and again speak the prophetic promise of God. Speak to your marriage, your home, your children, your finances, your health, etc. Sound your showphar.

Jericho was taken with the trumpets and with the shout of the people who had listened to the trumpets for seven days.

There is an interesting story in the book of 2 Kings. King Jehoash came to the prophet Elisha about the Arameans who they were fighting.

Possessing Your Jericho sermon video audio notes

2 Kings 13:18 Then he said, “Take the arrows,” and the king took them. Elisha told him, “Strike the ground.” He struck it three times and stopped.

2 Kings 13:19 The man of God was angry with him and said, “You should have struck the ground five or six times; then you would have defeated Aram and completely destroyed it. But now you will defeat it only three times.”

Sometimes we sound our showphar only three times. We should sound it again and again. It means the difference between victory and defeat. Can you imagine the fatigue of the priest? Blowing a trumpet for hours is not easy, yet this is what God told them to do. Don’t get weary. Don’t faint. Sound your showphar.

Joshua 6:20 So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

The great walls fell down flat. The city was taken. Joshua sent the spies to find and bring Rahab and her family out safely. Jericho was taken. The fragrance was captured.

What is your Jericho? What fragrance of life do you need to possess? How do your finances smell? How does your marriage smell and how does your job smell? Furthermore, how does your health smell? What prophetic promise has God given you and it would make your life so much more sweet smelling?

Possessing Your Jericho sermon video audio notes

I want to close today with the sounding of the showphar. We will blow the showphar, but before we do, I want you to take a moment and think about the prophetic word God has given you. What has he told you he has given you? What fragrance of life has he promised you? As the showphar sounds again and again, you declare it. Declare it again and again. Don’t be shy. Get loud. Shout! Don’t shout just three times. Get into this with me. Declare it. Let’s watch Jericho’s walls fall down flat for you.

Give the Lord a shout and a handclap.
