Resurrection HE HAS RISEN! Luke 24:1-12 audio video notes. Think about it. You enter the tomb. The body you came to tediously care for is gone. Standing there perplexed, two fluorescent guys pop into the tomb beside you. What do you do? Scream? Pass out? You think, “I’m about to die! I’m going to fall to the ground face down like an Ostrich.” The two glowing dudes begin talking! “Remember he told you he would rise the third day.” How well could you really be listening? They got the primary part: ‘HE HAS RISEN!’ Poof! The glowing dudes are gone. As fear faded they must have thought, ‘Did we just see angels! We did, right? Joanna, did you see…? They talked to us, right Mary? You heard them didn’t you?’

Resurrection HE HAS RISEN! Luke 24:1-12 audio video notes
Scriptures: Romans 10:9-10, John 5:28-29, Luke 23:55-56, Luke 24:1-3, Luke 24:4-7, Luke 24:8-10, Luke 24:11
Today we’ll focus on Luke’s account of the greatest event in human history: the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The teaching and preaching of the resurrection was the reigning theme of the apostles. We only talk about the resurrection once a year at Easter. They spoke about the resurrection every day. So, though we read this last Easter it will be good to talk about the resurrection again.
Did you know you must believe in the resurrection to be saved?
Romans 10:9-10 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART THAT GOD RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD, YOU WILL BE SAVED. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
Believing in the resurrection is mandatory for salvation. Without the resurrection, it would have been only another death. The resurrection is peculiar to Christianity. No other belief is based on the resurrection of its leader. There is no resurrection in Buddhism. There is no resurrection in Hinduism only recurring life in some form. Not only is Christianity built upon the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, but the goal of believers is a perfect physical resurrected glorified body as was Jesus. Though perfect the resurrected body of Christ walked, talked, ate, had scars, memory, could supernaturally appear, etc.
The message God delivers throughout the scriptures is death does not end our existence. Death is no more than the doorway into eternity. Everyone goes through this doorway and everyone lives forever.
John 5:28-29 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which ALL that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the RESURRECTION OF LIFE; and they that have done evil, unto the RESURRECTION OF DAMNATION.
Resurrection HE HAS RISEN! Luke 24:1-12 audio video notes
All four gospels tell of the resurrection. At first comparison, they seem to contradict each other and are in disarray. But, when you think about this, isn’t this how it should be? It’s four different aspects of something amazing! It tells us they didn’t all four get together and fabricate a story lining up every detail. Luke gives information about the resurrection others do not and others give information Luke doesn’t. There’s obviously no copying. It’s more like bewilderment. “There was an angel.” “No! I saw two angels!” “There were several women.” “No. Mary was alone.” If we each experienced the same amazing bewildering event and then wrote about it, how do you think it would read?
However specific important parts should be the same. In the four accounts of the resurrection, the Holy Spirit obviously wanted some specific details and all four gospels give us five specifics: (1) Jesus was truly dead; (2) On Sunday morning after burial, the tomb was empty; (3) Women were the first ones to discover the empty tomb; (4) Angels explained what happened; and (5) The “mighty believing” apostles refused to believe the women’s report. All four gospels omit one important bit of information – the actual resurrection. No one attempts to explain how the resurrection worked. That it happened is obvious. How it happened is inexplicable.
Recall how the burial ended Friday.
Luke 23:55-56 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and HOW HIS BODY WAS LAID IN IT. Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.
This would have been a large group of women who obviously were not satisfied with how Joseph and Nicodemus laid the body, so they agreed to meet at the tomb and do the job correctly at first light Sunday morning.

Luke 24:1-3 On THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. THEY FOUND THE STONE ROLLED AWAY FROM THE TOMB, but when they ENTERED, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
They didn’t name days of the week Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, etc. However, they did have Sabbath day. Other than that, they had first day, second day, etc. Today the first day, our Sunday, is called “The Lord’s Day” (Rev 1:10) as it’s the day the Lord rose and the reason the church worships on Sunday and not Saturday or Friday (cross day).
The resurrection must be true. If fabricated, women would not be the ones who discovered the empty tomb. In their society, women were considered ignorant, unreliable witnesses. If fabricated, the apostles would have been the ones to discover it and, in the fabrication, outside doing a countdown: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6… Obviously, no one expected a resurrection. Notice the stone was rolled away from the entrance, not just rolled back. Why was it rolled away? The stone was not rolled away to let Jesus out. It was rolled away to let people in to see an empty tomb.
Luke 24:4-7 While they were WONDERING ABOUT THIS, SUDDENLY TWO MEN IN CLOTHES THAT GLEAMED LIKE LIGHTNING STOOD BESIDE THEM. In their FRIGHT the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; HE HAS RISEN! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.'”
The word used for wondering about this is diaporeo {dee-ap-or-eh’-o} – to be entirely at a loss, to be in perplexity. Place yourself in the position of those women. It’s dusk daylight. You arrive at the tomb to find the stone is moved. You’d think, “This is weird?” You enter the tomb. The body you came to tediously care for is gone. You’re thinking, “What’s happened?” Standing there perplexed, two fluorescent guys pop into the tomb beside you. What do you do? Scream? You think, “I’m going to die! I’m going to fall to the ground face down like an Ostrich.”

These two glowing dudes begin talking! “Remember he told you he would rise the third day.” How well could you really listen? But, they got the primary part: “HE HAS RISEN!” Then the glowing dudes are gone. As fear faded they must have thought, “Did we just see angels? We did, right? Joanna, did you see…? They talked to us, right Mary? You heard them didn’t you?”
Luke 24:8-10 THEN THEY REMEMBERED HIS WORDS. When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to THE ELEVEN AND TO ALL THE OTHERS. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the OTHERS WITH THEM who told this to the apostles.
Then they remembered his words. It was not until then they even suspected Jesus would actually rise from the dead.
They ran to tell the eleven apostles and told all the others there as well. They told everybody. Matthew and Mark also give names of some of the women: Mary Magdalene; Joanna; Mary the mother of James (the lesser); Mary (Mat 28:1); Salome (Mrs. Zebedee) was there (Mar 16:1); and the others. There were at least six women. All required to give a valid witness were two or three, but did the men believe them? What did the mighty apostles think?
Luke 24:11 But THEY DID NOT BELIEVE THE WOMEN, because their words seemed to them like NONSENSE.
This was our Easter sermon – Nonsense. Are the things we hear about Jesus nonsense? Though there were at least six women all saying the same thing, the mighty apostles said, “Nonsense!” No one, not even the apostles, expected the resurrection.
What about you? Do you truly believe several women went to a tomb where a dead man was laid, found a huge heavy stone for the entrance pushed away, found the grave clothes of the dead man but there was no dead body, and these women told people who knew and loved them, but didn’t believe them. Do you believe these women, or is it nonsense? I mean, Mary Magdalene did have all those demons, and Mary Jesus’ mother, well she was in shock. Salome wanted her sons James and John to have special thrones, so maybe she was just hoping. And, it was barely daylight. You can’t just believe anything.

Why are women more receptive to spiritual matters than men? Why do husbands respond to their wives’ spiritual encounters so frequently as nonsense? Women see angels. Men think they are crazy. Women hear spiritual things. Men think they only heard thunder. How much of God do we men miss, or is it simply nonsense?
A resurrection from the dead was nonsense to them.
Death always wins. We learn this early in life when the goldfish, or the hamster, or the dog dies. We wait to see if they will come back, but they never do. Death always wins. This is how it works. Anything going against this is nonsense. But, death doesn’t win. This is promised. Death never wins when it comes to the believer. Death is simply the doorway into eternity.
1 Corinthians 15:54-57 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
This is the message of the empty tomb. Death doesn’t win. Death is real enough, but death isn’t final.
Luke 24:12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
Recall, that the last time Peter saw Jesus was when he denied the Lord three times early Friday morning. Peter wept bitterly but didn’t hang himself. He heard the women and along with John (Joh 20:3) ran to the tomb. The only things they found were empty strips of linen Jesus had been wrapped in and the folded cloth placed around Jesus’ head (Joh 20:5-7). It wasn’t the scene of grave robbers. How could grave robbers tumble away a huge stone, remove the body from the linen strips, and meticulously rewrap the cloth with Roman guards a few feet away (Mat 27:66)?
Resurrection HE HAS RISEN! Luke 24:1-12 audio video notes
There is more than sufficient proof of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. If it had not happened, the New Testament would never have been written. Who would fabricate such a lie and then literally die for a fake? Who would suffer crucifixion, torture, imprisonment, and exile? Also, who would watch their own children and family members die for a fake? Furthermore, who would become Roman candles, slaughtered in the coliseums, and fed to wild beasts for a fake Messiah? No one would.
Peter’s running to the tomb tells us he wanted to know what really happened.
Isn’t this true about us? As it were, we come running every Sunday morning in the steps of Peter to take a peak inside the tomb and learn what really happened. We don’t understand it all, but like Peter, we know something happened and we don’t want to miss out on the greatest event in human history. Death doesn’t win. Death is real enough, but death isn’t final for anyone. How about you? Do you believe it is nonsense, or do you believe He Has Risen? Which direction will you go when you pass through the doorway of death?
