Scriptures: Luke 9:1-2, 1 Corinthians 12:7-11, Luke 9:3-4, Luke 9:5-6

They say, “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he’ll call in work sick,” or something like that… At this point in Luke, Jesus was the only kingdom preacher in all of Israel. Herod executed John the Baptist. Jesus was a one-man operation for the entire nation, actually the entire world. God’s ministry of reaching the world was limited to where Jesus was. If the kingdom was to advance, Jesus must teach some people to fish, multiplying himself with those who won’t call in sick.

Luke 9:1-2 When Jesus had CALLED THE TWELVE TOGETHER, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

Jesus is in the process of giving his ministry over to others. It’s difficult to give something over to someone when it’s been your life. It’s difficult when it’s been your “baby” – you birthed it, you nurtured it, you fought for it, you feel responsible for it, you’ll die for it. But, one person can’t do it alone even if the person is Jesus Christ. There comes a time to allow others to step up even if that means they make mistakes.

Jesus called the twelve together separating them from the crowds. A time comes with every Christian when Jesus will call you, wanting to separate you from the crowds. It’s time for you to take your responsibility and minister.

It’s close to eighteen months since the disciples were originally selected. They’ve heard a hundred messages spoken to a hundred crowds. They’ve heard Jesus in a hundred debates with the Pharisees, and they’ve observed Jesus heal hundreds of people and drive out hundreds of demons. His message and methods were imbedded into their minds.

How many messages have we heard?

How many crowds have we been a part of? It’s time for us to do. Most of us couldn’t wait to learn to drive. “I can’t wait to get behind the wheel and drive,” we said. Did you feel that way about ministering for Jesus? “I can’t wait to get to pray for someone.” “I can’t wait to share with them the Bible.” Or “I can’t wait to help bring someone into the kingdom.”

Personally, I couldn’t wait. I wanted to Preach the kingdom. I wanted to teach, I wanted to pray for people, I wanted to watch God actually help someone as I ministered to them and I wanted to watch God do a miracle as I ministered. So I anxiously awaited God to show me he would use me. Do you remember the first time you got to minister to someone? Were you ready? How did you do? What did you do?

Let’s make applicable the instructions Jesus gave them for I believe it’s the same today. Let’s read again…

Jesus gave them power and authority TO accomplish four goals: (1) TO drive out all demons; (2) TO cure diseases; (3) TO preach the kingdom of God; and (4) TO heal the sick. These are the goals of the ministry. It’s not only to Preach the kingdom.

Drive Out Demons Cure Disease Preach the Kingdom video audio notes Luke 9:1-6

The goals are the same today. Do you know anyone demonically influenced? Do you know anyone with a disease? Or do you know anyone who needs to hear about the kingdom of God? Or do you know anyone who is sick? In life, we meet these people. Ministering to them is God’s goal for you and for me. Think of the people you know this moment demonically attacked or battling a disease, or needing to hear the gospel of the kingdom, or sick. These are the people we are sent out TO.

Until now demons, disease, false religion, and sickness only needed to deal with Jesus. Now they must deal with not only Jesus but also with the twelve. That’s how it should be. Demons, disease, false religion, and sickness should be confronted by every Christian. Imagine if demons, disease, false preaching about the kingdom, and sickness in this area had to deal with not only Jesus but with every one of us. Imagine if every Christian utilized the power and authority given to us. 35% of the global population claims to be Christian. The next closest is Muslims with only 19%. There are over 2 billion Christians. Imagine if we all utilized the power and authority given to us.

Jesus gives power, but he also gives authority TO use the power given.

Power is dunamis {doo’-nam-is} – inherent power, power residing in a thing by virtue of its nature. There’s an inherent power within every Christ follower to do dynamic things. Authority is exousia {ex-oo-see’-ah} – the power of choice, liberty of doing as one pleases, physical and mental power. It’s the authority to make the choice to use the dunamis power Jesus gave you and gave me to dynamically deal with demons, cure disease, preach the kingdom of God, and heal the sick. We all have power and authority.

Drive Out Demons Cure Disease Preach the Kingdom video audio notes Luke 9:1-6

Delbert, are you saying Jesus gave me the power and the authority to drive out demons, cure diseases, preach the kingdom, and heal the sick? YES, if you have the Spirit of God! It’s not a question of do you have the power. The question is will you use the power of choice physically and mentally – authority – to do something dynamic – dunamis.

1Corinthians 12:7-11 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tonguesALL THESE ARE THE WORK OF ONE AND THE SAME SPIRIT, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

If you have the Spirit of God in you, you have power gifts inherent in you to do dynamic things. I’ve learned over my years of ministry it’s not so much that one person has this gift and another person has that gift (although we become more comfortable using specific gifts). I’ve learned when I’m ministering to people; the Spirit gives me the gift just as he determines, be it wisdom, knowledge, discernment of spirits, prophecy, tongues, healing, etc. All I need to do is make the mental and physical decision to utilize the inherent power.

I know some say these gifts are not for today, but when did Jesus remove them, or remove the Holy Spirit? Let’s just ask. How many here have allowed the Holy Spirit to use at least one of these gifts through you? Let’s ask one more question.

Luke 9:2 …and TO HEAL THE SICK.

Is healing for today? Well, let’s ask. How many here without doubt know God healed you of something at some time as a result of someone praying for you? There ya go. Enough said.

Luke 9:2 …and he SENT THEM OUT TO PREACH THE KINGDOM OF GOD

I pray our church has some understanding about what preaching the Kingdom of God is about. The thing we all need to see is Jesus sent them out “to preach the Kingdom of God.” That’s what all preachers as well as all of us are to preach. Preaching the kingdom is preaching the advancement of God’s rule on the earth. If you’re not hearing the Kingdom of God preached, you’re not hearing the message Jesus sent people to preach. If you hear the kingdom of God is not advancing (Mat 11:12) and the gates of hell are stopping Christ and his church (Mat 16:18), you’re not hearing the kingdom of God preached. Also if you’re hearing we are going to lose to some antichrist, you’re not hearing the kingdom of God preached.

Luke 9:3-4 He told them: “Take nothing for the journey — no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic. Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town.

These verses are culture-specific. We don’t walk around with a staff, bag, bread, or extra tunics (underwear) today. The primary thought is they/we must learn to trust Jesus. (Later, in Luke 22:35-38, Jesus instructed them to take these things.) At some point, we’ve got to learn to trust Jesus when it comes to our ministry. He always provides for us if we minister for him. We’ve found this to be so true. He has always provided for us. He has never failed to provide, not once!

Drive Out Demons Cure Disease Preach the Kingdom video audio notes Luke 9:1-6

Whatever house you enter, stay there… Live among the locals. Get to know them. Your focus is people, not comfort. Isn’t that what you and I do every day as we are sent out? We live our lives among local people. We don’t load ourselves down with a bunch of stuff, all our weapons (staff), extra clothes, all our money, all the food we can carry, etc. Also, we don’t jump around from house to house. We go out every day and come back in.

During the course of the day, we should find an opportunity to talk to someone about the Kingdom of God, find a demon to drive out, find someone with a disease we can help, or find someone sick we can pray with. On a normal day, each of us encounters at least one of these things. We simply need to make the decision to utilize the power inherent and minister to people.

Jesus told them, and tells us, to make people the priority.

Purpose this. Use the power and authority I’ve given you to heal the hurts and pains people experience. Minister to people, if you will they will allow you to preach the Kingdom of God to them.

I receive many emails from people in our church. I love to get them. It gives me both a way to better connect and to hear your heart through the words you write. So, if you get a personal email from me, I’m not picking on you asking why you weren’t at church last week. It means I’m thinking about you. Sometimes people will write me something like this one from a couple a while back:

“We both love Life Gate and are happy to be part of the church. I appreciate the fact it is a place to come and share your joy as well as sorrow. I have always felt in the past that I could not be real at church, and I am glad to have found a place to “be real.” The email went on to say they wished we could find a way to tell the community there is a church “where God is real and loves us all.”

Jesus says here’s the way. Each of us living among the locals should be ministering.

Sometimes, as we encounter people, instead of simply allowing people to be “real” we want to make them “Christians” like us. We want to make them into our image and what we think a “Christian” is. We want to make them dress like we dress, talk like we talk, worship like we worship, pray like we pray. So, we want to make them like us instead of allowing Jesus to make them into his image. Jesus said you be real. Appreciate what people do for you and minister to them as best you can. Then he said this.

Luke 9:5-6 If people do not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town, as a testimony against them…”

Doesn’t that sound abrasive and harsh after just saying the ministry is all about people? There was a practice the Jews had when leaving gentile land and entering back into Israel. It was to shake the dust off gesturing they didn’t want anything clinging to them from those outside God’s covenant. However, this was not gentile land. Jesus told them to shake off the dust of those in the land of Israel. These were Jews. It was another indictment by Jesus of God’s coming judgment upon Israel.

Making this applicable, I see Jesus saying “Do all you can do for people. If they don’t receive it, leave them with God to work it out.” Shake it off and move on. We are to proclaim the kingdom of God to the people, not impose the kingdom of God upon the people. We are to pastor people, not pester people. A time comes in ministering to people when we’ve done all we can. There’s nothing else to say. There’s nothing else to do. Jesus didn’t say judge them or talk negatively about them. Jesus said shake it off and move on. Don’t allow their rejection of God to stop you. Move on to the next opportunity. Don’t apologize or change the message to accommodate or manipulate. Shake it off and move on.

Occasionally someone slips back and gets out of church.

I’ll call them, email them, text, and do all I can, but after a while, I’ll leave them alone. I watch. If they go to another church, great, but most frequently that’s not the case. I realize they are not rejecting me. They’re rejecting God. I’ve got to leave them with God to work it out. I don’t put them in a headlock or body slam. I don’t impose myself or God upon them. Do I love them? Of course, I do. Will I minister to them, not if, but when I get the opportunity? I do all the time. They know where I am when they need me and they will.

Have you ever been tricked into attending a “timeshare” presentation? They get you into a room and it feels like they lock the door. You can’t get out and they won’t let you say, “No.” I think sometimes preachers make people feel they’re in a “timeshare to heaven” presentation. Preachers are sometimes like a telemarketer who calls. You didn’t want to be rude, but finally after thirty times of saying, “No, I’m not interested,” you get angry enough to hang up.

Jesus tells us to preach and minister the kingdom of God, not impose the kingdom of God. I attempt to preach it. I work to make it clear. I’ll find different ways to say it. I give an opportunity to respond to it. A response is great. A headlock is wrong. I realize people are not rejecting me. They are rejecting God, so I leave them with him.

Luke 9:6 So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.

Jesus multiplied himself twelve times. The mission Jesus sent them to do was extremely successful. Jesus gave them and us our goals: (1) TO drive out all demons; (2) TO cure diseases; (3) TO preach the kingdom of God; and (4) TO heal the sick. He gave them the power – dunamis – to do something dynamic. Would they make the decision to use the authority – exousia? They did. What about you?

How wonderful it should be. Jesus said if you minister, he will take care of everything you need. Every place those ordinary men went they delivered, they cured, they preached, and they healed. Is it that way with us? Most Christians don’t minister because of fear of personal rejection. Jesus said don’t worry about that. People are not rejecting you. Leave them to God. Shake it off and go to your next opportunity. Your next opportunity, my next opportunity, is now.
