Transfiguration into Another World Luke 9:28-36 audio video notes. There is a transfiguration into another world for all of us. If you seriously pray with Jesus in a mountain-type experience, you will experience transfiguration. You may see things and hear things unspeakable. You may see Moses and Elijah. Also, you have an opportunity to glow as you wrap yourself around Jesus.

Scriptures: Luke 9:28-36, Luke 9:29, John 8:12, Matthew 5:14, Luke 9:30-31, Hebrews 12:1, Luke 9:32, Matthew 1:24, Acts 20:9, 2 Corinthians 12:2, Acts 10:10, Revelation 1:10, Revelation 4:2, Revelation 17:3, Revelation 21:10, Luke 9:34

Where was the “coolest” place you’ve ever been? How was it when the time came to leave? Did you become depressed because you didn’t want to come back? Some might say, “Anywhere,” but surely there’s been at least one special place. My point is we have something in our genetic coding that desires to transcend being where we consider normal. C.S. Lewis said in Mere Christianity, “If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”  I like that and today I want to talk a little about “transfiguration into another world.” Let’s read our passage in its entirety.

Luke 9:28-36 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.

As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters — one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.) While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves, and told no one at that time what they had seen.

Transfiguration into Another World Luke 9:28-36

I will deviate today from our normal exegesis of scripture. There are a few points I want to amplify, so I will spend our time together on those points.

Jesus invited Peter, John and James to pray. I thought, as I read this, how intimidating it would be for Jesus to ask me to go off someplace and pray with him. I would wonder, “Would I pray the right things? Could I pray long enough? Would my prayer be a joke to Jesus?” Then it dawned on me. Jesus asks me every day to pray with him. To him, my prayer isn’t a joke.

As we’ve discussed previously, Jesus asks us questions when we pray with him (Luk 9:18-20), but other things happen as well when we pray. Prayer transforms or transfigures us. That’s true for all even Jesus. There is a transfiguration through prayer.

Luke 9:29 As he was praying, the appearance of his FACE CHANGED, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.

The word for changed is heteros {het’-er-os} – the other, another, the other of two, quality, i.e. one not of the same nature, form, class, kind, different. Jesus didn’t look the same. It was his “other” face. It was his heavenly face.

Matthew 17:2 There he was TRANSFIGURED before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.

The word transfigured is – metamorphoo – to change into another form. Jesus morphed into a glow.

Transfiguration into Another World Luke 9:28-36

John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

The light doesn’t shine on Jesus. He is the light. The light shines from him (Rev 21:23;1:13-16), but Jesus also said,

Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.

Not only does the light of Jesus shine upon us, we are the light. Light shines from us. Here is what I am attempting to project. When we pray we experience transfiguration. We transform or transfigure into our other face, our quality face, different nature and class. We glow. It said, “His clothes became as bright as a flash of lightening. Why did his clothes change? Jesus wore clothes like everyone else, or did he have special electrically wired clothes? (Perhaps that’s why the soldiers gambled for them – kidding!)

It speaks of the commonest of things when wrapped around Jesus express his glory, his love, his joy, his mercy, and his peace glows through us when we wrap around him in prayer. God shines his glory through common things like me when I pray.

Occasionally, people tell me something I said or wrote, or did, helped them or even changed their lives. I’m a very common thing, but when I wrap myself around Jesus in prayer, even I glow in this world. I hear about the amazing things some of you do to help people. I see Jesus glowing through you. When we wrap around Jesus in prayer, we can’t help but glow. When we pray, I mean seriously pray on a mountain with Jesus, we change, we morph. We transfigure. We heteros – transfiguration.

Transfiguration into Another World Luke 9:28-36

Luke 9:30-31 TWO MEN, Moses and Elijah, APPEARED in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke ABOUT HIS DEPARTURE, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.

Moses and Elijah showed up during the prayer meeting. They didn’t talk to Jesus about his “death.” They talked to Jesus about his departure. Death isn’t the end. Death is a departure from here to heaven or to hell. God gives us life and the opportunity to glow. Hopefully, we utilize the opportunity. Our departure will happen, but it’s not the end. You simply departed from this dimension heading for a new destination.

It says “Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor.” Not “two angels,” “two men appeared.” Did Peter, John, and James see those two departed men? Yes, they did. After our departure, men will be men and women will be women. We will have identifiable glorious splendor, but not wings and feathers, etc.

They saw Moses and Elijah, right? Have you ever felt the presence, or felt you saw the presence, of someone after they died? Delbert, are you talking about ghosts? No. I’m talking about another world. I’m talking about the departure. All I know is Moses and Elijah appeared.

Transfiguration into Another World Luke 9:28-36

How many have experienced something like this?

I’ve had a few occasions concerning my mother and dad. The most compelling story I know was when our two nieces were very young girls positively identifying their great-grandmother (Judy’s Mother) from a picture as the “woman” who watched over them playing in the woods, keeping them from injury. She was the “woman” who made sure they were safe in the bathtub playing while their mother was incapacitated. They never saw Margaret in life, but they saw someone in the woods and by the tub.

My Dad saw my Mother after her departure and she told him to buy me a boat. He did buy me a boat – Hallelujah! My Brother-in-Law saw one of his buddies sitting in a chair in his house after he died and couldn’t understand why his wife couldn’t see him. Our niece saw her Father. I saw my Mother. I imagine you have some experience too. You’re not crazy or weird. Moses and Elijah APPEARED!

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since WE ARE SURROUNDED BY SUCH A GREAT CLOUD OF WITNESSES, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

There is a departure into another world. There is another world.

Transfiguration into Another World Luke 9:28-36

Luke 9:32 Peter and his companions were VERY SLEEPY, but when they became fully awake, THEY SAW HIS GLORY AND THE TWO MEN STANDING WITH HIM.

Superficially, it seems when Jesus would go pray it was a signal to the disciples to go take a nap. As you recall, they napped during the monumental time in Gethsemane.

However, to give Peter, James, John, and some of us a little space on their dozing off during the sermon, I saw something in this passage I consider important. The word sleepy is hupnos {hoop’-nos} – sub salience (under), sink, sleep. We get our English word hypnosis from hupnos. Hupnos is a very different word than used in Luke 22:45 when the disciples slept in Gethsemane –katheudo {kath-yoo’-do} – to drop off to sleep normally. The Gethsemane nap was taking a nap after a big meal.

I do that nearly every day and there is nothing spiritual about it – it’s normal. But, here on the Mount of Transfiguration, they experienced hupnos. It was not a “normal” sleep. It was hypnotic, and it was something supernatural. They went “under” hupnos and it was a spiritual experience. It was a transfiguration.

If you’ve ever experienced one of these moments, you know what hupnos is. I’ve only experienced a few in my many decades of serving the Lord. In hupnos, it’s as though you sink into God/peace. You hupnos “go under” and into a spiritual realm – another world. The spiritual dimension in which you find yourself becomes as real as this room. You see spiritual things. You hear spiritual things. Then you experience transfiguration.

Transfiguration into Another World Luke 9:28-36

Matthew 1:24 Then Joseph being raised from SLEEP {hupnos} did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:

Joseph was in hupnos as the angel told him Mary was pregnant by the Holy Spirit.

Acts 20:9 And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a Deep SLEEP {hupnos}: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep {hupnos}, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead.

Eutychus {Yoo’-too-khos} went into hupnos and fell out the window.

People can also hupnos into spiritual darkness (Rom 13:11) sinking into a satanic state. You know people who seem hypnotically controlled by sin and darkness. Maybe you’ve heard someone say something like, “I don’t know what came over me!” Now you can tell them. They experienced an evil transfiguration.

This sleepy – hupnos – is experiencing the supernatural. Have you ever experienced a hypos sinking into the spiritual dimension into light, or darkness, or both?

Transfiguration into Another World Luke 9:28-36

The apostle Paul spoke about one of his experiences.

2 Corinthians 12:2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know — God knows. And I know that this man — whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows — was caught up to paradise. He heard inexpressible things, things that man is not permitted to tell.

In context, Paul spoke about himself. His experience was as real fourteen years later as it was when it happened. A true spiritual moment is that way. Paul found himself in a third supernatural heavenly dimension. He said it could have been an “out of the body” experience, he wasn’t certain, but he said, “God knows.” In his explanation he was “caught up” – harpazo {har-pad’-zo}- to seize, but didn’t leave earth (1Th 4:16-17). He went into a dimension of paradise hearing and seeing things that just were not to tell. Actually, to tell people about a hypos experience does sound weird even to the person who experienced it. My experiences sound weird even to me.

Transfiguration into Another World Luke 9:28-36

Peter had a similar experience.

Acts 10:10 …while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a TRANCE. He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners.

Peter went into a trance – ekstasis {ek’-stas-is} – a throwing of the mind out of its normal state, alienation of the mind. He saw a very strange vision of animals in a sheet coming out of heaven and was told to eat them.

John the Apostle went through four of these spiritual experiences as he recorded the Book of Revelation. He referenced them as being “in the spirit.”

Revelation 1:10 I was IN THE SPIRIT on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet

Revelation 4:3, 17:3, 21:10

4:2 And immediately I was IN THE SPIRIT: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

17:3 So he carried me away IN THE SPIRIT into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.

21:10 And he carried me away IN THE SPIRIT to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God

Transfiguration into Another World Luke 9:28-36

These four “in the spirit” moments actually divide the Book of Revelation showing us the Revelation of Jesus Christ (Rev 1:1 – not antichrist).

I’ve personally experienced a few moments. Like the apostle Paul, I hesitate to tell, but I will share two of them. The first hupnos I experienced was not long after I came to the Lord in 1978. I worked the graveyard shift from midnight until 8:00 a.m. As was my habit, I locked the doors of my office during my “lunch” time for a time of prayer. I knelt at a folding chair, began praying, and sank into the spiritual hupnos. It was a supernatural experience. I was “In the spirit.” Was I in my body or apart from my body, I don’t know – God knows.

Initially, I didn’t know what was happening, but peacefully I went under. God was so very real. The result of that experience was the baptism of the Holy Spirit and my speaking in tongues. I heard things – sounds – I truly could not speak about because I didn’t know what they were. It was an amazing moment. The next night I attempted to duplicate the experience, but it didn’t happen. It was years later before another heavenly hupnos came for me.

Years later, I was then pastor of Life Gate lying in our bed attempting to go to sleep.

It was a Saturday night. I began to see things. I saw an arched stained glass window as in the side of a church building. The vision had me looking from the outside of the building, but the glass was turned as if inside. The image on the glass was a horrific, pig-looking face with horns standing on two pig legs, but with human-like hands. (See, it’s difficult to talk about these things. They sound weird.) So I asked, “What is this?” I heard, “This is the spirit over this area.” I didn’t hear the word Jezebel, but that’s what I sensed. Interestingly I felt I was being instructed and warned about a dominating Jezebel-type spirit ruling this region. I

Transfiguration into Another World Luke 9:28-36

t found its grasp during the Civil War when so many men from this area died or were physically and mentally maimed. Women were forced to take over and take care of the homes, families, and farms – chop wood, take care of animals, bring in income, pay bills, etc. This city became known as “Queen City of the Highlands.” This dominating spirit passed on through the generations and battles to rule this region and churches to this day. We’ve watched it work over our area.

I’m saying all this to tell you, if you’ve experienced a spiritual hupnos, you’re not crazy. You know something happened. You might not be able to speak about it. But also, allow me to warn you. I have heard some weird things too, so be cautious. Some people simply ate too much chili. Some people in their desire to appear spiritual create false experiences to talk about. Also some people in their seriousness allow the enemy in. The devil will oblige you. People do experience hypos and sink into darkness. Be cautious.

Luke 9:34 While he was speaking, a CLOUD APPEARED AND ENVELOPED THEM, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; LISTEN TO HIM

We could go on and on about the cloud. I only want to point out that Peter, John, and James were enveloped by the cloud. They were in and experiencing a special supernatural moment, but notice. The voice in the cloud – the Father – no matter the experience, will always point the experience to Jesus the Son and tell you to listen to him. If your experience isn’t pointing you to Jesus and listening to him, you’re in the wrong cloud. Get out of that hupnos. This is the wrong transfiguration.

Transfiguration into Another World Luke 9:28-36

This is all I’m going to talk about from this passage. I want you to know there is a transfiguration into another world for all of us. If you seriously pray with Jesus in a mountain-type experience, you will be transformed. You may see things and hear things unspeakable. You may see Moses and Elijah, and you have an opportunity to glow as you wrap yourself around Jesus. Don’t miss it as our departure is coming much sooner than any of us want to think.
