Low Self-Worth – How to Overcome Insecurity

Scriptures: Judges 6:12, Judges 6:13, Judges 6:14-16, Judges 6:16, Philippians 4:13

How can you smile and stay positive when you have little or no self-worth? Many people live life intimidated. These are insecure. They feel everyone is brighter, more attractive, talented, and smarter than they are. They feel people see them as second-class, with no worth and no assets. Compounding all this, they feel they’ve made too many mistakes, and they put others on a pedestal and look down on themselves.

It’s good to celebrate others and be happy about their success and accomplishments, but you are someone to be celebrated. You are bright. You are attractive., and you are talented. Furthermore, you are smart. You are first class. You have great worth, and you are full of assets. Do you think your mistakes caught God by surprise? No. You have extreme potential and value. There is greatness in you. We need to learn not only to celebrate others. We need to learn to celebrate ourselves.

I Have Low Self-Worth

People say, “You should see how beautiful and eloquent she is.” Or, “He is so talented and handsome,” or “She is so brilliant.” That’s good, but don’t get caught up in how great they are and not see how great you are. You are good at something they are not. Don’t make the mistake of idolizing people. It will cause you to feel you don’t measure up. They do have strengths and abilities, but the truth is they have faults and weaknesses exactly as we all do. They are great, but we need to say, “I’m great too.”

Don’t be intimidated by the abilities of others.

Be confident in who you are. I heard a story about a man and his wife in a parade. He was the mayor of the city. He spotted a man in the crowd who was once his wife’s fiancée before they married. The “once” fiancée owned a local gas station. The mayor said to his wife, “Aren’t you happy you didn’t marry him? You’d be working in a gas station.” The wife said, “If I’d married him, he’d be the mayor.” You’ve got to know who you are. You’ve got to have confidence in who you are. God created you with amazing gifts and talents.

The Bible tells us about a man named Gideon in the Bible. At the time, the people of God were oppressed and dominated by people called Midianites. Gideon was hiding trying to get enough food to get by when an angel of the Lord showed up.

(KJV) Judges 6:12  And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, THOU MIGHTY MAN OF VALOUR.

Get the picture. Gideon feels worthless. He’s hiding, and the angel of the Lord addressed him as “You mighty man of valor.” The word valour (KJV spelling)is chayil, meaning value, resources, overcomer, wealth, strength – force, virtue. Gideon began talking to the angel.

Judges 6:13 “But sir,” Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our fathers told us about when they said, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now THE LORD HAS ABANDONED US and put us into the hand of Midian.”

As we will see in the next verse, Gideon suffered from serious self-worth issues. “They’re better than I am, stronger than I am. God must like them because he’s abandoned me.” One of the things people with low self-worth do is blame God. “Where is God? God’s abandoned me. If he loved me, this wouldn’t be happening to me.” No. God loves you. The problem is you are not using your valor: value, resources, overcomer, wealth, strength, force, and virtue you have. It’s exactly what the Lord said to Gideon.

I Have Low Self-Worth

Judges 6:14-16 THE LORD TURNED TO HIM and said, “GO IN THE STRENGTH YOU HAVE and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?” “But Lord,” Gideon asked, “HOW CAN I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I AM THE LEAST IN MY FAMILY.”

Before we get too far from the passage, what was Gideon’s excuse for not doing something with his life? His family, right?

There was Gideon, full of a wealth of resources, but hanging his head down, hiding from everyone, feeling unworthy, and blaming his family. No! I’m telling you what the Lord told Gideon. I’m your angel today. Listen to me. You are full of valor – value, resources, wealth, strength, force, and virtue. Inside Gideon were the gifts and talents to lead the people better than anyone else he knew. God’s placed gifts and talents inside you. You can do something better than anyone you know, and it will make you great!

Gideon said, “It’s my relatives and my family’s fault. My family’s small and weak. We live on the wrong side of the tracks. We don’t have any influence. I’m the least. I have the least influence. I’m nobody. My family’s not even proud of me. I’m of no value. I have no worth.” We need to see Gideon’s low self-worth became his excuse for not doing what God gave him the ability to do – his valor to be great. It’s the saddest part of low self-esteem and low self-worth.

Yes, it was bad for you. Maybe you had a bad mom. Maybe you had a bad dad, and maybe you were abused physically, sexually, and emotionally, but please don’t allow this to cause you to miss your greatness.

There is a woman who, when a young girl, was sexually abused at least weekly by her father.

“I was sexually, mentally, emotionally, and verbally abused by my father as far back as I can remember until I left home at the age of eighteen. He did many terrible things…some of which are too distasteful for me to talk about publicly… I was so profoundly ashamed because of this. I was ashamed of myself, and I was ashamed of my father and what he did… What I learned about love was actually perversion. My father told me what he did to me was special and because he loved me…

But God always had a plan for my life, and He has redeemed me. He has taken what Satan meant for harm and turned it into something good. He has taken away my shame and given me a double reward…”(1)

I Have Low Self-Worth

Added to this is the fact her mother was aware of the sexual abuse. She caught her husband abusing their daughter but allowed it to continue. The girl’s first marriage ended in divorce. Her first husband abused her also. Her second marriage got off to a rough beginning, but she takes the blame, saying she was filled with self-pity and was verbally abusive, depressed, and bitter. She’s suffered a miscarriage and is a breast cancer survivor. Of course, the woman is Joyce Meyer, who leads a multimillion-dollar ministry touching thousands of lives every single day and has written over seventy books. (2)

Joyce became great! Today, “Joyce and her husband, Dave, have been married for over forty years, and they are the parents of four grown children. Dave and Joyce Meyer make their home in St. Louis, Missouri. All four of Joyce’s children are involved in some facet of Christian ministry.”

Joyce Meyer struggled with low self-esteem.

She was hiding from life in a hole, head hung down, feeling unworthy and blaming her family. It wasn’t until she reached inside for the valor given her that her life and world changed. Joyce Meyer was a Gideon leading thousands to freedom from oppression.

Judges 6:16 The LORD answered, “I WILL BE WITH YOU, and you will strike down all the Midianites together.”

Notice the Lord didn’t say, “I am with you.” He said, “I WILL BE with you.” It’s “Gideon when you step out in your valor  – value, resources, overcomer, wealth, strength – force, virtue – I will be with you.” The Lord said he was with us always, but this was after he told us to “Go!” (Mat 28:18-20). It’s when we step out God shows off, and we do great things. When you step out in your valor, God will be with you. It’s a promise.

I Have Low Self-Worth

Gideon did step out in his valor, and he annihilated Midian (Jdg 8:28). The Lord was with him. Gideon was great. Joyce Meyer stepped out in her valor. The Lord was with her. Joyce Meyer is great. If you step out in your valor, you will do something great.

(KJV) Philippians 4:13 I CAN DO ALL THINGS through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Philippians 4:13 I CAN DO EVERYTHING through him WHO GIVES ME STRENGTH.

True strength doesn’t come from physical power. The strength to have a successful life comes from your valor. To be great and do something great comes from within, not from your muscle mass. God gives you the strength to do everything you want to do.

I believe God is going to give you the opportunity to do something great in the near future. You may say, “I don’t know, Delbert. I hear you talking, but…” But what? No. God would not give you the opportunity if he had not already given you the ability.

Some of you are going to have the opportunity to, instead of working for your boss, you will become the boss. Some of you will have the opportunity to open your own business, and some of you will write books. Also, some of you will extend your education, setting you up for something big in your future. Some of you will speak and teach. There is no limit to what you can do.

Instead of being amazed at what others can do, people will be amazed at what you do. Don’t be intimidated. Don’t be insecure. You are bright. You are attractive, and you are full of talent. Also, you are strong. You are first class. You have great worth, and you are full of abilities. Moreover, you have not made too many mistakes. Celebrate others, but celebrate you. Compliment the greatness of others, but learn to say. “I’m great too!”
