Satan – His Demons – How to Overcome Demonic Oppression

Scriptures: Isaiah 14:4, Isaiah 14:12, Isaiah 14:16, Genesis 3:1, Job 1:6-8, Job 2:6, John 8:44, 1 Peter 5:8, Genesis 6:4-5, 2: Peter 2:4-6, Revelation 20:1-4, 1 Corinthians 6:3, Jude 1:8-9, Acts 19:15-16, Deuteronomy 18:10-12, Matthew 10:1, Galatians 3:27, Ephesians 4:27

From where do Satan and demons come, and why are they here anyway?

Satan and his demons are huge studies with several different doctrines (teachings). I personally have difficulty with the traditional “Lucifer” teaching for several reasons. That teaching puts God and Satan as nearly equal adversaries, and that’s just not right. The Bible never says that or hints toward it.

You remember how the teaching goes. Lucifer supposedly was an anointed cherub somehow close to the authority of the Son Jesus Christ or even Father God. Have you ever read anything like that in the Bible? Lucifer, supposedly, was made of pipes for music (that part comes from a totally different set of scriptures (Ezekiel 28) than from where Lucifer is mentioned.

Some even teach Lucifer as the cherub who led or created the music in heaven. I have no idea where that comes from. Have you ever read that in the Bible? At any rate, Lucifer attempted to overthrow God, so, as the teaching goes, God expelled Lucifer and his angels from heaven to earth (Rev 12). I guess Earth was Lucifer’s punishment.

Satan – His Demons – How to Overcome Demonic Oppression

Lucifer is mentioned only once in the King James’ Version and New King James’ Version (Isaiah 14:12) – once!

Yet, some have a huge Lucifer doctrine. No other translation uses the word “Lucifer.” You will find Day Star, or Morning Star, or King of Babylon, but not Lucifer. Open your Bible and look – Isaiah 14:12. Unless you use King James or New King James, it’s not there.

Stranger yet is the fact that no writer in the entire Bible – Old Testament or New Testament – ever refers to Satan as Lucifer. Jesus never did. Not one apostle ever did. Moses didn’t. No prophet did. No one does. They use serpent, dragon, devil, evil one, prince of this world, the accuser of the brethren, adversary, Beelzebud, father of lies, the tempter, god of this world, wicked one, etc., but NEVER LUCIFER.

Doesn’t it seem to have such a huge “Lucifer Doctrine” that at least ONE of the other 65 books in the Bible would reference Satan as Lucifer? It’s amazing how we are pulled into strange doctrines, and they become major beliefs.

Satan – His Demons – How to Overcome Demonic Oppression

Let’s quickly see what the Bible really does say. The Lord instructed Isaiah to prophesy about Babylon falling to Assyria. In Isaiah 14:4, the Lord tells Isaiah…

Isaiah 14:4  you will take up this taunt against THE KING OF BABYLON: How the oppressor has come to an end! How his fury has ended!

I wish this had been to Satan, but to whom was Isaiah told to speak/taunt? Obviously, this “taunt” was against the king of Babylon. Isaiah does, and a few verses later…

(KJV) Isaiah 14:12  How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

That is the only verse using Lucifer. That’s the verse you hear referenced. Here is one you don’t hear even though it is in the same context four verses later.

Isaiah 14:16  They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, IS THIS THE MAN that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

Is this the what? Man! The word is ‘iysh – a man as an individual or a male personSo, according to the Bible, was this Lucifer a once important angel whom God threw out of heaven, which the scriptures never say, or was he a man, the king of Babylon, which the scriptures do say? I don’t want you to agree with me. I do want you to think.

Satan – His Demons – How to Overcome Demonic Oppression

Ok, Delbert, then from where did Satan come? Well, Jesus and the apostles did reference Satan as the serpent. Of course, that is referencing Genesis chapter 3 in the garden with Eve.

Genesis 3:1  Now the serpent was more SUBTIL than any beast of the field WHICH THE LORD GOD HAD MADE. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

Who made the serpent? The Lord God. No surprise there, but who made the serpent subtil ([that’s how KJV spells it] – subtil – `aruwm meaning cunning in a bad sense. That’s how God made the serpent. This is the first use/reference to Satan. If you study scriptures, you know first seed use is extremely important. It’s the seed, and no matter how “hybrid” future seeds become, the DNA of that first seed mentioned is always there. Every place we find Satan, the devil, the dragon, the evil one, etc., we always find that “subtil-ness.”

Ask you a question. Do you believe God was “caught off-guard” and surprised when Adam and Eve sinned, or do you think God knew and had a plan? If you are like me, you believe the Lord God knew Eve would fall prey to the serpent.

Satan – His Demons – How to Overcome Demonic Oppression

Let’s look at an eye-opening passage.

Job 1:6-8  Now there was a day when THE SONS OF GOD came to present themselves before the LORD, and SATAN came also among them. And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”

Make special note of the phrase “SONS OF GOD” and who they are. You will need to identify them again shortly. They are “angelic beings” for certain and probably a reference to all and all forms of “angelic beings – host of heaven, principalities, powers, Seraphim, Cherubim, Archangels, etc. The hosts of “angelic beings,” Satan included, are required to present themselves before the Lord. This did not only happen once. It appears to be a regular event (Job 2:2). To me, that sort of ruins the “Lucifer attempting to overthrow God” theory.

If you are familiar with the book of Job, you know the Lord allowed, even encouraged, Satan, to test his blameless and upright servant Job in an extremely severe way. That test is what the entire book of Job is about. Satan did to Job what he did to Adam and Eve… test and temp.

Satan – His Demons – How to Overcome Demonic Oppression

So biblically, from where does Satan come, and why is he here? The Lord God made/created the serpent subtle – crafty (NIV), shrewd (NLT). The Lord makes Satan report to him, which dispels (at least to me) the Lucifer theory with all its pipes and music, etc. Also, the Lord allows Satan to use his subtlety to test/tempt even the righteous servants of the Lord, but always with limits. I know we are bewildered by and emphasize God’s allowing the devil to test Job, but we also need to ask this: WHO WITHHELD SATAN FROM KILLING JOB?

Job 2:6  The LORD said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands; but YOU MUST SPARE HIS LIFE.”

Obviously, Satan would have killed Job had Satan had his way. Would he kill you were it not for the Lord God?

Satan, the devil, the evil one, etc, will use his subtle schemes to get to any of us. Why does the Lord God allow this? IT’S TO FORCE YOU AND ME TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THE TREE OF LIFE AND THE TREE OF GOOD AND EVIL. Satan will use anything to tempt/test you. With Adam and Eve, it was the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. What is it for you? What is your fruit? Satan will use anything from a weakness to religion – anything! However, all his temptations come down to lies. He lusts to lie and murder. Jesus, speaking to very religious people, said,

Satan – His Demons – How to Overcome Demonic Oppression

John 8:44   Ye are of your father the devil, and the LUSTS of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: For he is a LIAR, and the FATHER OF IT.

The devil fathered lies. I want to make sure we get this. The devil, Satan, the evil one, the dragon, ruler of darkness, whatever you want to call him, will use lies, temptations, deceptions, anything to destroy you and kill you and your children this very moment if he could. He is YOUR adversary.

1 Peter 5:8  Be sober, be vigilant; because YOUR ADVERSARY THE DEVIL, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

What about demons? From where did they come? Were they thrown out of heaven with Lucifer??? We get our first insight about this again in Genesis.

Genesis 6:4-5  The Nephilim were on the earth in those days – and also afterward – when the SONS OF GOD went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown. The LORD saw how GREAT MAN’S WICKEDNESS ON THE EARTH HAD BECOME, and that EVERY INCLINATION OF THE THOUGHTS OF HIS HEART WAS ONLY EVIL ALL THE TIME.

Satan – His Demons – How to Overcome Demonic Oppression

First, let’s note the results of the Sons of God going to/with the daughters of men. The results were great wickedness, and every inclination of the thoughts of man’s hearts was only evil all the time.

Who did we see are the SONS OF GOD from Job? They are some form of “angelic beings.” The context here is Noah, the building of the ark, and why the flood came. It came because of the horrible wickedness caused by“Nephilim.” What is a Nephilim (or Nephili)The KJV interprets it as “giants.” A Nephilim is a giant person born from the union of a son of God and a daughter of men. The reference to sons of God is angelic beings of some form. It’s obviously not a reference to a human or a son of men.

Here is a quote from Wycliffe Bible Commentary.

“A powerful race of giants, called “Nephilim,” came into prominence. The verb napal, “to fall,” has been considered the source of the noun, and so these gigantic creatures have been thought of as “fallen ones.” The reference to the bene ‘Elohim… can, also, denote the heavenly circle of beings in close fellowship with Jehovah, residents of heaven, assigned specific duties as God’s assistants (see Job 1:6). …In the OT, however, “sons of God” are a special class of beings that make up the heavenly court…

Satan – His Demons – How to Overcome Demonic Oppression

To translate it literally would make the passage say that members of the heavenly company selected choice women from the earth and set up marriage relationships with them, literally and actually… In the light of the facts and the accurate rendering of the words of the text, we conclude that some men of the heavenly group (angels or messengers) actually took wives of the earthly women. They used superior force to overpower them, to make the conquest complete. The “sons of God” were irresistible (cf. 2Pe 2:4; Jude 1:6).”

The main point we need to grasp here in an attempt to stay on point is some form of angelic beings, let’s call them demons, roam the earth.

They are causing great wickedness on the earth and making every inclination of a person’s thoughts only evil all the time. By the way, the Nephilim show up again in Canaan (Num 13:33), which is when the Lord told Israel to take the land and destroy every man, woman, and child.

Another interesting thing we never hear about because of the Lucifer theory is God has already chained some demonic angels.

2 Peter 2:4-6  For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment… what is going to happen to the ungodly?

Jude 1:6  And I remind you of the angels who did not stay within the limits of authority God gave them but left the place where they belonged. GOD HAS KEPT THEM CHAINED IN PRISONS OF DARKNESS, waiting for the day of judgment.

Satan – His Demons – How to Overcome Demonic Oppression

God can put fallen angels and even Satan in hell in chains right now if he wants.

Revelation 20:1-4  And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and BOUND HIM a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit…

When it’s all said and done, Satan will be cast into the lake of fire (Rev 20:10), and you and I will judge the angels.

1 Corinthians 6:3  Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!

We will judge evil spirits or demonic angels.

When it comes to fighting and battling darkness, there are some points we must understand.

Satan – His Demons – How to Overcome Demonic Oppression

1) DO NOT DISRESPECT YOUR ENEMY.

I have seen people disrespect and toy with the enemy. Don’t do that. It will explode in your face.

Jude 1:8-9  In the very same way, these dreamers pollute their own bodies, reject authority and slander celestial beings. But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”

There is an interesting story in Acts concerning this.

Acts 19:15-16  One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?” Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.

These were Jews trying to drive out demons using the name of Jesus, but not true believers themselves. They said, “In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” We will talk more about that in a minute.

2) DO NOT FLIRT WITH DARKNESS

Deuteronomy 18:10-12  Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is DETESTABLE TO THE LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you.

Any witchcraft – black or white – is detestable to the Lord. Maybe as a child, you played with Ouija Boards, Tarot Cards, etc. From time to time, people ask me about that stuff. I simply let them read the previous scripture. Don’t read horror-scopes (horoscopes). When that stuff comes out, run. Things like that are detestable to the Lord. That was another reason the Lord judged the nations of Canaan. People do this and wonder why their lives are not going well.

3) DO NOT FIGHT WITH YOUR OWN POWER BUT WITH THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS.

Matthew 10:1  He called his twelve disciples to him and GAVE THEM AUTHORITY TO DRIVE OUT EVIL SPIRITS and to heal every disease and sickness.

Satan – His Demons – How to Overcome Demonic Oppression

Jesus did not give us his “power” to deal with evil spirits. He gave us his AUTHORITY. There is a big difference. You do not have enough power of your own to deal with the devil. If a person walks out in the street and attempts to stop traffic on their own, people ask, “Who are you? Police, I know. Sheriffs, I know, but who are you? What are you doing?” Some may stop to keep from running over you, but most will go on by.

However, if a uniformed officer of the law walks into the street and puts his hand out for you to stop, what do you do? You immediately respond and stop. What is the difference? The officer has put on the uniform of authority. We know about putting on the armor of God (Eph 6). Also, in baptism, we put on clothing in Christ.

(NIV) Galatians 3:27  for all of you who were BAPTIZED into Christ have CLOTHED YOURSELVES WITH CHRIST.

(KJV) Galatians 3:27  For as many of you as have been BAPTIZED into Christ have PUT ON CHRIST.

Through baptism in the name of Jesus, we put on Christ. We clothe ourselves in his authority.

Satan – His Demons – How to Overcome Demonic Oppression

We wanted you to know that Satan is real and demons/evil spirits are real. Satan is subtle – cunning in a bad sense. He uses his demons to test and tempt you with anything. You must choose between the Tree of Life and the Tree of Good and Evil, i.e., God’s way or your way. Here is the bottom line. The majority of the serious problems we experience are because we gave the devil a place or foothold, just as did Eve, by choosing what we knew we should not.

(KJV) Ephesians 4:27  Neither give place to the devil.

(NIV) Ephesians 4:27  and do not give the devil a foothold.

A drug addict gave a place to the devil and is now addicted. A person addicted to pornography gave the devil a foothold. He or she chose the wrong tree. Which tree do you choose? We have all, at one time or another, chosen the wrong tree. Through Jesus, we have the authority to deal with SATAN AND HIS DEMONS.
