Scriptures: Mark 11:24, 1 John 5:15, Matthew 18:19, Psalms 27:4, Acts 13:21, 1 Samuel 8:7, 1 Samuel 8:19-22, Genesis 3:6, 1 Kings 5:8, 1 Kings 5:9, 1 Kings 5:10, 1 Kings 9:1, 1 Kings 9:11, 1 Kings 9:19, 1 Kings 11:37, 1 Kings 9:1, 2 Kings 13:21, 1 Thessalonians 2:17, Acts 20:24, 2 Corinthians 10:9-10, John 5:5-7, Psalm 37:4-5, Psalms 145:19, Proverbs 13:12, Mark 11:24

I want to talk to you today about DESIRE. I want to show you today, the power of DESIRE. Also, I want you to see how powerful it is in prayer and in life. Moreover, I want to stir up your DESIRE. Then, I want to cause you to condense down and know what it is you DESIRE from God.

Mark 11:24   Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye DESIRE, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and YE SHALL HAVE THEM.

Jesus said if you want a dynamic prayer life, attach what you DESIRE to your prayer. The Greek word translated DESIRE is aiteo (ahee-teh’-o Strong’s #154) and means to ask (in general):- ask, beg, call for, crave, desire, require. It is used 71 times in the New Testament, which tells me when I read the word aiteo translated as “ask,” it means much more than our English word ask. Here is how the NIV translates the verse.

(NIV) Mark 11:24   Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask [aiteo] for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

To me, there is a huge difference between ask and DESIRE. For example, You can ask Father to fix your finances, but do you DESIRE to the point that you will do what things soever are necessary to fix them? Do you crave it? Will you budget, take a sandwich to work instead of going out for lunch, or do what the Bible says to do with your money? You can pray and ask Father to save your marriage, but will you do what things soever necessary to save it? Do you crave and beg God for it?

What Things Soever You Desire sermon series

You can ask Father to help your children, but do you DESIRE to do what things soever it will take? You can ask Father for a better job, but do you DESIRE it to the point that you will do what things soever necessary such as acquire more education, or work longer hours? It is more than simply asking. It is DESIRE. ASKING MUST MOVE TO DESIRE TO HAVE WHAT WE WANT FROM GOD.

1 John 5:15  And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we DESIRED of him.

DESIRE moves God. HE WILL HEAR WHAT WE ASK, BUT WE HAVE WHAT WE DESIRED OF HIM. DESIRE FINDS A WAY. DESIRE PAYS THE PRICE. You do what you can do and then God does what you cannot do. It is more than simply asking.

Think about life. It was the things you DESIRED to accomplish that you truly accomplished. It was the things you DESIRED to acquire that you acquired. WE WILL NEVER ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING MAJOR IN LIFE WITHOUT MAJOR DESIRE. WE WILL NEVER ACQUIRE ANYTHING WORTH HAVING WITHOUT DESIRE.

Everything that I have that matters came because of DESIRE. Everything that I have done that matters came because of DESIRE. I am doing what I am doing this moment because of DESIRE. This church exists because of DESIRE. When I came to the Lord, I had a DESIRE. I wanted to do something for the Lord. IDESIRED to mature in Christ and to teach and preach his word. Therefore, I was not content to sit in a seat. In other words, I DESIRED to be in the middle of where God was moving.

So, I began studying God’s word. Then, I took courses, and I acquired degrees in theology. As a matter of fact, I jumped through all the hoops required by the denomination I served. For example, I would take every opportunity to teach or preach. Also, I would have groups at my house and teach as long as they would listen.  One day, I came to this town to preach and the people had a DESIRE for the word of God. The church began to grow. We had to knock out walls to get the people in. We had to move and here we are today. Do you know why? DESIRE.

What Things Soever You Desire sermon series

Matthew 18:19   Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask [aiteo DESIRE], it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

PEOPLE AGREEING TOGETHER IN DESIRE MOVES HEAVEN! My point is that everything comes from DESIRE. WHAT THINGS SOEVER YE DESIRE, WHEN YE PRAY…

I have been on many fasts. I would do 3-day, 7-day, 10-day, and have even done 3 forty-day fasts. Why would anyone do that? The answer is DESIRE. DESIRE pleases Father. It is not that I didn’t eat food. It was my DESIRE for him. He said if I DESIRED it, I could HAVE it. WHAT THINGS SOEVER YE DESIRE…

YOU NEED TO CONDENSE YOUR DESIRE DOWN TO ONE PRIMARY THING AND SEEK AFTER IT.

Psalms 27:4  One thing have I DESIRED of the LORD, that will I seek after

I have to ask you, WHAT DO YOU DESIRE FROM GOD TODAY? Some of us need to get a new or fresh DESIRE. WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU DESIRE FROM GOD TODAY? What is it that you seek after? Do not waste it. Make it count. When we truly DESIRE, we seek after it.

What Things Soever You Desire sermon series

DESIRE IS POWERFUL. IT IS A SHARP WEAPON. You use it for a great victory, or you can fall upon it and destroy yourself. DESIRE moves God even if the DESIRE is not in a person’s best interest. The apostle Paul referenced one of these times.

Acts 13:21  And afterward they DESIRED a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years.

It was the Old Testament time of Judges. Samuel was the judge, who was a product of a praying mother’s DESIRE. His mother, Hannah, prayed with DESIRE for him (1Sa 1:10). Samuel was the prophet/judge, but getting old. The people came to him DESIRING a king like the other nations. God’s plan was that God would be their king. Samuel prayed and here is what the Lord said.

1 Samuel 8:7  And the LORD told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.

Your DESIRE determines your king. To some people, it is money, lust, greed, or laziness. DESIRE can take you away from God’s best. The Lord said that he would give them a king, but it was not in their best interest. The Lord told Samuel to tell them that a king would draft their children into his army, make them serve in the king’s fields and houses, make weapons of war, and heavily tax them. Still, the people DESIRED a king other than the Lord.

What Things Soever You Desire sermon series

1 Samuel 8:19-22  But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us…” When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the LORD. The LORD answered, “Listen to them and give them a king….”

I am trying to show you the power of DESIRE. WHAT DO YOU DESIRE? DESIRE can make you, or DESIRE can destroy you.

One day the serpent came to Eve in Adam’s garden. He tempted her with hath God said…? He redirected her DESIRE from Adam to a tree.

Genesis 3:6  And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be DESIRED to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

DESIRE will take you out of your garden. DESIRE does not only affect you. It affects all around you – your spouse, your children, and your life!

God wants you to use your DESIRE to build you an empire. We think that Solomon just “happened” to be king because he was King David’s son. David had many sons. Some of them were more handsome and older, but none of them had the DESIRE of Solomon. In fact, it seems there are more scriptures about Solomon and his DESIRE than any other Bible character.

Solomon was one of the most successful people in the Scriptures. He definitely was the wealthiest. Solomon makes Bill Gates look poor. The Bible says his wisdom was beyond compare. He expanded the borders of Israel to their furthermost place to fulfill what God promised Abraham. Too, he subdued all his enemies. Then, he built great cities and the temple of God. The queen of Sheba said the half had not been told. It was his DESIRE.

2 Chronicles 8:1, 6  At the end of twenty years, during which Solomon built the temple of the LORD and his own palace… as well as Baalath and all his store cities, and all the cities for his chariots and for his horses – whatever he DESIRED to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon and throughout all the territory he ruled.

1 Kings 9:1  When Solomon had finished building the temple of the LORD and the royal palace, and had achieved all he had DESIRED to do

What Things Soever You Desire sermon series

WHAT DO YOU DESIRE TO BUILD, TO HAVE, TO ACCOMPLISH? The one element required is DESIRE.

DESIRE WILL OUTLIVE YOUR FLESH. The one thing Elisha DESIRED was a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. He died one miracle short of doing double the miracles that Elijah did, but his DESIRE remained in his bones.

2 Kings 13:21  Once while some Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders; so they threw the man’s body into Elisha’s tomb. When the body touched Elisha’s bones, the man came to life and stood up on his feet.

MY POINT IS THAT DESIRE IS DEEPER THAN THE NATURAL. Real DESIRE is in your bones. Jeremiah said it was a fire in his bones (Jer 20:9). DESIRE will continue to work after we are in our tombs. You may DESIRE that your children serve God, but you do not see it now. One day they will jump up praising and serving God. If you DESIRE it, it will happen because DESIRE is deeper than the natural. WHAT DO YOU DESIRE DOWN IN YOUR BONES? WHAT THINGS SOEVER YOU DESIRE…

DESIRE IN YOUR BONES WILL GET YOU THROUGH TOUGH TIMES. Apostle Paul was a man of great DESIRE.

1 Thessalonians 2:17  But we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with GREAT DESIRE.

DESIRE was in the Apostle Paul’s bones. His DESIRE was deep. Though he is dead and his bones turned to dust, his DESIRE to bring you and me the gospel is alive today. Paul took the gospel and preached the gospel to the world. He began churches all over Asia, but not without numerous tough times. 2 Corinthians 6:4-10 says that Paul experienced great troubles, hardships and distresses, beatings, imprisonments, riots, hard work, sleepless nights, hunger, dishonor, bad report, regarded as an impostor, beaten, sorrow, poor, and having nothing. He adds to the list in 2 Corinthians 11 saying, five times given forty stripes, three times beaten with rods, once stoned, three times shipwrecked, a day and night in the sea, perils of robbers, cold, and hunger. The devil tried everything from snakebites to shipwrecks to stop Paul. Do you know what he said?

What Things Soever You Desire sermon series

Acts 20:24  But none of these things move me…

What stops extremely tough times from moving us? DESIRE!  Certainly, desire made Paul the most successful of all apostles. As a matter of fact, DESIRE does not quit. Nothing will stop you from your success if you raise up your DESIRE.

DESIRE IS SUPERIOR TO CHARISMA OR APPEARANCE.

Have you ever heard the historic physical description of Paul? His name means little (Strong’s #3972 –Paulos). The description of Paul goes something like this: Paul was a very short 5-foot bald man. Early catacomb paintings depict Paul with very little hair. He had crooked bowed legs. His body weight was heavy. His eyebrows were very heavy and met and Paul had a large hooked nose. One article said, “He is about five feet high; very dark hair; dark complexion; dark skin; large Roman nose; sharp face; small black eyes, penetrating as eternity; round shoulders; a whining voice, except when elevated, and then it almost resembled the roaring of a lion.” We could safely add to that the fact that Paul’s body was heavily scared from the beatings and stoning. Most likely, Paul had difficulty seeing (Gal 6:11). Here is what Paul said of himself.

2 Corinthians 10:9-10  That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters. For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.

It would be difficult for me to listen to someone with a “whining voice.” My point is, it was not Paul’s external charisma and appearance, but when you add DESIRE, you can change the world.

We began this church twenty years ago. It did not just happen and I know that I am not the most charismatic person, but I have a DESIRE. We have had many opportunities to quit. We have fought demons and devils and people and criticism. There have been hardships, distress, imprisonment, riots, sleepless nights, dishonor, being called impostors, etc., but it has been our DESIRE that has made it happen.

What Things Soever You Desire sermon series

There is always something to stop you if you allow it. You know there is always an excuse you can find and give to say you cannot do what you were called and born to do. Also, there is always an embarrassing situation and something to overcome, but if you have DESIRE you can say like Paul…

Acts 20:24  But none of these things move me…

You do not have to be good-looking, super talented, or even the sharpest tool in the shed. You do need DESIRE! If you have DESIRE, nothing can stop you. In fact, when you have DESIRE there is no stopping place.

Jesus was passing through a colonnade area one day called Bethesda. There was a pool there and superstition had it that an angel would come and stir the water and whoever got into the water first received healing. There were sick people lying all around. Jesus, for some reason, selected one man.

John 5:5-7  One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

The man said, “Somebody always pushes me down.” It is always people’s fault. Jesus was not interested in how people had held him back. Jesus asked, “DO YOU WANT TO GET WELL?” It is not about how people have let you down, disappointed you, and forsaken you. It is not about your parents or your education or your spouse or ex-spouse. It’s about DO YOU WANT TO GET WELL? DO YOU THEN DESIRE! Do you know what the Lord said to that man? Jesus said, “GET UP!” GET YOUR DESIRE LEVEL UP!  If you DESIRE it you can GET UP! If you DESIRE it, no one can stop you and God will move heaven and earth for you.

What Things Soever You Desire sermon series

Psalm 37:4-5  Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the DESIRES of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and HE SHALL BRING IT TO PASS.

Psalms 145:19  He will FULFIL THE DESIRE of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.

Proverbs 13:12  Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the DESIRE cometh, it is a tree of life.

DESIRE comes. Do you have it? The Bible says,

Mark 11:24   Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye DESIRE, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

WHAT DO YOU DESIRE? I want you to go home with this word of God. Also, I want you to condense down what you DESIRE OF GOD into one sentence. Furthermore, I want you to pray it and believe you receive it. Then, we will all watch God work.

Stand to your feet and praise him.
