Luke 21:37-38 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives, and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.
Luke 22:1-2 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people.
The Passover was the target date to get rid of Jesus. There were massive amounts of people in Jerusalem during the Passover feast. All accommodations were taken and people were in tents and sleeping outdoors, but why would Jesus camp out at night on the Mount of Olives (in the Garden of Gethsemane)? His friends Lazarus, Martha, and Mary had homes only about a mile away where he could be much more comfortable. The Jewish leadership searched for some way to get rid of Jesus, but how? Jesus was aware of this, so Jesus disappeared into the Mount of Olives at night until he was ready to allow them to find him. How did Jesus do this?
Luke 22:3-6 THEN SATAN ENTERED JUDAS, CALLED ISCARIOT, one of the twelve. And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might BETRAY JESUS. They were delighted and agreed to give him money. He consented, and WATCHED FOR AN OPPORTUNITY TO HAND JESUS OVER TO THEM when no crowd was present.
Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot. The target date was Passover and now they had Judas to make it happen. “Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot.” How ominous this sounds, but why did Satan enter Judas “then”? Do you think Judas knew Satan entered him? How about others? Do people know when Satan is active in their lives? Do we, or do I, or do you? Could it happen to you?
It said “Then…” At the exact time the chief priests were attempting to conjure up a way to do away with Jesus in walked Judas. Then Satan entered Judas. Isn’t the timing amazing? God’s timing always is. “They were delighted.” It was too good to be true! They gave Judas thirty pieces of silver – about four months’ salary. What would this be in today’s economy? Maybe today it would be around $8,000. You’ve seen people betray Jesus for much less.
One of the saddest statements in all of scripture is “Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve.” Judas and Adam walked and talked with God every day. Both turned toward Satan, the serpent of old (Rev 12:9). Then Satan entered Judas… Whatever restraint held Satan back until now was released and Satan entered Judas. Judas consented and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.
I want to attempt to say something outside the box.
The way I see it is Satan did not want Jesus to go to the cross. Satan is God’s devil and on a leash. This thought may be new to some of us, but God controls Satan. He’s not God’s adversary. He’s ours (1Pe 5:8). He doesn’t roar at God. He can’t devour God. This is necessary to grasp if we are to understand the plan of God. I’ll quickly show us the “leash” part then I will talk about the cross part. Job chapters 1-2 are extremely enlightening on this.
Job 1:6-8 One day the angels came to PRESENT THEMSELVES BEFORE THE LORD, AND SATAN ALSO CAME with them. The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the LORD, “From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it.” Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job?
Satan must present himself before the Lord and take his orders from the Lord. He can only operate within the parameters God allows. Satan made a request for permission from God to come against Job. We’ll see the same in this chapter of Luke concerning Peter (Luk 22:31-32).
Luke 22:31 “Simon, Simon, SATAN HAS ASKED to sift you as wheat.
We’ll talk more about this at verse 31, but God has Satan on a leash and created Satan to do what he does (Gen 3:1). Take a look at the following passage and tell me if Satan wanted Jesus to go to the cross.
Matthew 16:21-23 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that HE MUST go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he MUST BE KILLED and on the third day be raised to life. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “THIS SHALL NEVER HAPPEN TO YOU!” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “GET BEHIND ME, SATAN! YOU ARE A STUMBLING BLOCK TO ME; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”
Was Satan encouraging Jesus to go to the cross, or attempting to stop Jesus from going to the cross? Satan didn’t want Jesus to go to the cross. Why?
Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; HE WILL CRUSH YOUR HEAD, and you will strike his heel.”

You remember the three great temptations of Jesus by the devil in the wilderness (Luk 4:1-13). The first one was miraculous power – turn stones into bread. The third one was immortality – jump off the temple. Let’s read the second.
Luke 4:5-6 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “I WILL GIVE YOU ALL THEIR AUTHORITY AND SPLENDOR, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.
The temptations were how Jesus could have it all – miraculous power, immortality, the kingdoms of the world, authority, and splendor without the cross. The temptation passage ends with,
Luke 4:13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him UNTIL AN OPPORTUNE TIME.
Do you know when the opportune time was? It was in the Garden of Gethsemane where Satan tempted Jesus so violently to not go to the cross that Jesus’ sweat was like great drops of blood. Satan did not want the cross. Then what’s going on here with Satan entering Judas and Judas betraying Jesus? Let’s take a look at the context. The context should tell us. Judas watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over.
Luke 22:7-9 Then came the DAY of Unleavened Bread on which the PASSOVER LAMB HAD TO BE SACRIFICED. Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.” “WHERE do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.
The feast of Unleavened Bread followed the Passover. Our days are from 12 am to 12 am. A Jewish day was from sunset to sunset. Let’s say 6 pm to 6 pm. To us it would have been Thursday evening. To them, it was already Friday and the day the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. He would be! Jesus would be dead and buried by sunset. Peter and John asked, “Where do you want us to prepare for it?”
Luke 22:10-13 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ He will show you A LARGE UPPER ROOM, all furnished. Make preparations there.” They left and FOUND THINGS JUST AS JESUS HAD TOLD THEM. So they prepared the Passover.
Jesus sent them on a mission of extreme secrecy. No names. No addresses, and no specifics. Why? Judas watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over when no crowd was present. Passover was the target. The meal, in town, in a room with no crowd would have been perfect.
The answer to “where” was oblique. Jesus sent only Peter and John to make preparations and their instructions were extremely vague. “…a man carrying a jar of water will meet you…” What? No name? A man carrying a jar of water would be somewhat unusual. Women usually fetched the water. Obviously, the man was expecting Peter and John. The jar of water was the sign. “…follow him to the house that he enters…” What? No address? “Can’t you just tell us where to go?” “…say to the owner of the house, ‘The teacher asks…”
The man carrying the jar of water would hand Peter and John off to the owner of the house. No names were spoken not even Jesus’ name, only “the teacher.” “Make preparations there.” Peter and John would not return. It took all day to kill the lamb, acquire the needed groceries, roast the lamb, and prepare the meal for thirteen men. It was all done in spy-like stealth. Notice Satan entered Judas and Judas made his deal of betrayal in the context of the Passover meal?
Jesus knew Judas had betrayed him.
He knew Judas would reveal the location to the chief priests and the arrest would interrupt what Jesus must accomplish in the tiny time slot. Jesus planned to be on the cross in a few hours. He would not allow Satan to stop him, but unless all Jesus needed to accomplish was accomplished there would be no need for the cross. Jesus with desire wanted this meal (Luk 22:15). Here Jesus terminated the Old Covenant and Passover. He instituted the New Covenant and Communion. “This is the New Covenant in my blood.” He warned Simon Peter he would be sifted by Satan, but when it was over to strengthen the boys. Jesus told of his leaving and the coming of the Holy Spirit Comforter. When the time was right, Jesus released Judas’ leash to go and do what he was going to do.
Satan and Judas had a plan, but Jesus didn’t do it the way they planned. It would be done according to God’s plan. Aren’t you happy God’s plans are better than our plans? Jesus set up the Passover meal for thirteen people without tipping off Judas by telling no one where. Yet they were all there exactly as they should be even Judas. Why did Jesus want Judas there anyway? So he could keep an eye on him until it was time to release Satan’s leash.
Judas’ betrayal was no surprise to God (Psa 41:9; 55:12-13; Zec 11:12-13).
It was recorded a thousand years earlier. Judas was in the plan of God from the foundation and creation of the world (Rev 13:8). Satan didn’t kill Jesus. Killing Jesus would crush his head. Judas didn’t kill Jesus. The Jewish haters didn’t kill Jesus. The Romans didn’t kill Jesus. Then who killed Jesus? If Jesus was the Lamb of God then who’s right was it to kill the Lamb/Jesus? (Isa 53:10)
Isaiah 53:10 Yet IT WAS THE LORD’S WILL TO CRUSH HIM AND CA– USE HIM TO SUFFER, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and THE WILL OF THE LORD will prosper in his hand.
It’s a stunning thing when we see a glimpse of how God moves in our midst. When God’s time came Jesus told Judas, “What you are about to do, do quickly” (Joh 13:27). Jesus released Judas from his leash when Jesus was ready. Not before. Nothing happened until Jesus was ready for it to happen.
The Lord has a plan for your life, my life, our families, our nation, and this planet. He knows who carries the jar of water, the names, the addresses, and all the details. They’re all planned. We go through life asking, “What?” “Who?” “Where?” Can’t you give me a little more information? Life is frequently in stealth. We can’t figure it out. We’re not supposed to until it happens, then we say, “Oh. I get it now.” If we knew too soon we’d tip-off Judas and Satan. The lack of information is not to hide it from us. It’s to stop Satan and Judas from mucking up God’s best plan for us and ours.
