In this short passage, Luke summarizes three categories proving Jesus is the Messiah. The Jews wanted a sign. They got way more than “a” sign. The categories are his power over (1) the natural; If Jesus is the savior, he must be capable of delivering my body from sickness in the natural realm. The savior must be able to deliver people in the natural physical realm. (2) The supernatural; If Jesus is the savior, he must be capable of delivering me supernaturally from demonic attacks of temptations, darkness, lust, evil thoughts, and wicked imaginations.
And (3) The eternal; If Jesus is the savior, he must have the power to save me from eternal judgment. If not saved, I am damned to hell for eternity. Does Jesus have the power to deliver my body, soul, and spirit? I need salvation physically, salvation mentally for my soul, and salvation spiritually for eternity. Can Jesus do that for me? Is he Messiah Immanuel? It requires someone supernatural.
Luke 4:38-39 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon…
Recall, that the synagogue was where Jesus encountered the man in “church,” a member of the synagogue, possessed by an unclean demon. The demon left. The man was delivered and stayed. It was supernatural. After that traumatic experience, it is traumatic when demons show up and show out. It breaks my heart when there is no repentance and the demon is allowed to injure lives. After his experience with the demon, Jesus went home to his friend’s house, Simon. Simon will become Simon Peter (Mat 16:17-18) but was not yet designated an apostle. He lived in Capernaum where he operated a fishing business on the Sea of Galilee. This was obviously the synagogue Peter attended with his family.
Archeologists uncovered a house in Capernaum dated from the first century. Prayers were etched on the walls to Jesus. “So it seems clear that, from the earliest times, followers of Christ preserved a memory that this was Peter’s house. There is no reason to doubt this tradition. The remains that can still be seen today may be the exact place where Jesus lived.” Jesus is real, actually lived, actually died, and actually rose from the dead. The Bible is true. It’s factual and historical proof. God worked on this earth, walked on this earth, and slept on this earth.

Jesus had what is called his “inner circle.”
There were the twelve disciples, but then there was Peter, James, and John. Have you ever wondered why even Jesus had an “inner circle?” Couldn’t he just be friends with everyone the same? No. Jesus had a rough experience with a demon. That day, Peter became a sanctuary for Jesus. Peter’s house was a place for Jesus to rest and feel protected. I think we all understand a “hiding place.” Maybe it’s your mom or dad or close friend. For Jesus that day with a demon, it was Peter’s house.
Luke 4:38-39 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a HIGH FEVER, and THEY asked Jesus to help her. So he bent over her and REBUKED THE FEVER, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
They would have been Peter, his wife, and probably Peter’s children (tradition says). Peter was married. He had a mother-in-law living with him. Mother-in-laws only come with wives. I had a great mother-in-law. Peter’s family had a family crisis. Peter’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever. The Greek word for high is megas. She had a Mega fever – an extremely high fever. A fever is the body’s way of fighting off infection. She was very ill. Jesus REBUKED THE FEVER. Jesus did what? Rebuked the fever? Did Jesus speak to a fever? Is this supernatural? Jesus has power over sickness and can deliver the natural body. Peter’s mother-in-law was healed. The fever left and she stayed just as the demon left and the man stayed at the synagogue.
When have you EVER rebuked, spoken to, a fever? We take a pill. Jesus rebuked the fever. When you pray for your child, how do you pray, or do you pray? Maybe it’s just easier to take a pill. The problem is you are missing an opportunity to increase your faith and your child’s faith. I have no problem with medication, but what if you prayed for your child and they were healed? When my children are sick, now one thirty-nine and one forty-three years old, they still call me to pray for them. I increased their faith as well as my faith when I prayed for my children and God healed them. Jesus rebuked the fever. When you pray, rebuke stuff. It’s supernatural.

Do we believe at Life Gate God delivers the body from sickness today?
Absolutely! A preacher (more than one) asked me, “Do you pray for people every week?” Let’s do this: If you honestly know, not think, God healed you of something someplace along the way, raise your hand. See! I’ve seen some amazing things. I’ve seen a breached baby turn in a womb and cancer disappear with proof from x-rays. Once I prayed for a man who was about to experience open heart bypass surgery. Miraculously, God did a bypass around the blockage and back into his heart. X-rays proved it!
Does every person I pray for or you pray for, receive healing? No, but that doesn’t stop me from praying. I don’t know what God might do. I just put my hand on them and pray. When I pray, I speak to things like body parts. I rebuke cancer, fever, infection, etc. Jesus spoke to things from natural fevers to supernatural demons. He spoke to a fig tree, the wind, sea, and told us to speak to the mountain. Someone says, “That’s silly.” It might be to you today, but you don’t have cancer. One day you will want someone to speak to your mountain.
Just last week, one of our niece’s daughters was diagnosed with the Swine flu.
The baby is two years old, with a fever, nausea, diarrhea, etc. Judy called our niece wanting me to pray for the baby. Her mom held the baby in her arms with the phone on speaker. I prayed speaking to the flu, fever, etc. In ten minutes, the baby was running and playing as healed as could be. Jesus has power over sickness and can deliver your natural body.
Luke 4:40 When the sun was setting, the people brought to Jesus ALL WHO HAD VARIOUS KINDS OF SICKNESS, and LAYING HIS HANDS ON EACH ONE, he healed them.
The Sabbath was from sundown Friday till sundown Saturday. People could only go to synagogue and go back home on Sabbath, but as soon as the sun was setting they headed for Jesus. We’ve got some lessons coming up about the Sabbath. God meant it to be the best day of the week. Religion made it the worst.

One thing we need to point out. Jesus didn’t heal only those who “believed in him.” He healed ALL. Pray for healing for people who don’t go to church. Watch what God does.
This began a “healing explosion” during the ministry of Jesus Christ that essentially banished sickness and disease from Israel. People came from all over to be healed and were healed. Never in human history was there ever before or since anything close to what Jesus did.
Mark 2:12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “WE HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS!”
Luke 10:23-24 Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see
These things never happened before or since like then. How will God prove Jesus is the Messiah? One way was by his display of power to deliver in the natural.

Not only did Jesus speak and rebuke sickness, but he also laid his hands on EACH ONE as he spoke. We believe in the laying on of hands at Life Gate. It’s not mystical or magical. We do it because the scriptures teach it (Mk 16:18). Jesus constantly laid his hands on people –EACH ONE.
Matthew 8:3 JESUS REACHED OUT HIS HAND AND TOUCHED THE MAN. “I am willing,”
Mark 5:23, 8:23, 10:16
5:23 “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” …He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).
8:23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and PUT HIS HANDS ON HIM, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?” …Once more Jesus PUT HIS HANDS ON THE MAN’SEYES. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored…
10:16 And he took the children in his arms, PUT HIS HANDS ON THEM and blessed them.
Luke 13:13 Then HE PUT HIS HANDS ON HER, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.
Not only did he lay hands on people to heal, he did other things as well.
Mark 7:32-35 A deaf man with a speech impediment was brought to him, and the people begged Jesus to lay his hands on the man to heal him. Jesus led him to a private place away from the crowd. He put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then, spitting onto his own fingers, he touched the man’s tongue with the spittle. And looking up to heaven, he sighed and commanded, “Be opened!” Instantly the man could hear perfectly and speak plainly!

I’ve never spit on anyone. I have stuck my fingers in ears. The point is, don’t be afraid to touch people when you pray for them (refrain from spitting). Take their hand. Touch the sick area. When you touch them, you touch their lives. Your touching them says God is touching and loving them through you.
While we’re here, every Christian washed by the blood of Jesus has the same amount of authority to pray for healing and deliverance for people. It’s not Benny Hinn has 100% I have 90%, the elders have 70%, life group leaders 50%, and you have 25% authority. There are gifts and callings, but after the gifts are listed, Paul said,
1 Corinthians 12:11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and HE GIVES THEM TO EACH ONE, JUST AS HE DETERMINES.
Pray for your children. Pray for your parents. I did. Pray for your spouse. Pray for people at work and church. You have the authority to rebuke fevers, etc. Use it to show the glory of Jesus. JESUS PROVES HE IS MESSIAH BY HIS POWER OVER THE NATURAL.
Luke 4:41 Moreover, DEMONS CAME OUT OF MANY PEOPLE, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Christ.
People came to Jesus to receive deliverance. Since we talked about this fairly extensively last time, we won’t do it again. I do want to emphasize that deliverance has been given a bad rap. These people came wanting deliverance. Isn’t that what we should all come wanting? God is concerned about our deliverance in the natural (physically) and you desire that. God is also concerned about your deliverance in the supernatural (mentally) and we should want that as much. Miraculous signs have a place and purpose in church and it bothers me when people say they are not for today.
John 2:11 This, the first of his MIRACULOUS SIGNS, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus REVEALED HIS GLORY, and HIS DISCIPLES PUT THEIR FAITH IN HIM.
Miraculous what? Miraculous signs are to reveal the glory of Jesus and cause people to put their faith in him. Let me ask you a question. Which is more important: God healing someone of terminal cancer, or that same person receiving salvation? Both would be good, right? Say you want to go to Florida. You follow the signs – Florida 300 miles, 100 miles, 50 miles, and finally, there it is the big road sign “Welcome to Florida.” Do you pull over at the sign and say, “We’re here, let’s unpack? Get out the beach chairs and towels. Put suntan lotion on the kids. We’ll stay here at the sign.” People then and people now stop at the sign and worship the sign and not the savior. Miraculous signs are to reveal his glory but don’t stop at the signs. Go on to the Savior.

I’m being cautious, but note the association with sickness and demons. I’M NOT SAYING IF A PERSON IS SICK THEY HAVE A DEMON! However, demonic depression, oppression, or possession will, can, and does lead to sickness. That’s one reason we need deliverance. Once again, when medication and counseling don’t help, we need to look deeper. Jesus did. JESUS PROVED HE WAS MESSIAH BY HIS POWER OVER THE SUPERNATURAL TO DELIVER ME. He can deliver my mind and soul from demons.
Luke 4:42-44 At daybreak Jesus went out to a SOLITARY PLACE. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, THEY TRIED TO KEEP HIM FROM LEAVING THEM. But he said, “I MUST PREACH THE GOOD NEWS OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD to the other towns also, because THAT IS WHY I WAS SENT.” And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
Healing is great. Deliverance is amazing, but the reason Jesus was sent was to preach the good news of the kingdom of God. Healing and deliverance are signs to get you there. He has power over the natural and supernatural, but it boils down to eternity.
Jesus needed some downtime. The prior day he preached in the synagogue, cast out a demon there, went to Peter’s house, healed Peter’s mother-in-law of a fever, and then spent all night healing and delivering all who came. Jesus was up and out at daybreak. He found a solitary place.
Mark 1:35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a SOLITARY PLACE, WHERE HE PRAYED.
Where is your solitary place where you pray and spend time with God? When was the last time you went there? If it was necessary for Jesus, God himself, the central and center member of the Trinity, to find a solitary place and pray, surely it’s necessary for you and me. Where’s your solitary place?
People wanted to keep Jesus right there. They wanted to stake God right there in Capernaum and make people come to God. Jesus said, “No. The plan is I go to people.” That’s what Immanuel does – God with and among us.

Ask you one more question. Had Jesus stayed there, would it have been sin? I mean, he knew what he was supposed to do, yet he could have preached, healed, and delivered right there. It would be much more comfortable than traveling, sleeping and eating outside, etc. He could have shown his glory right there, right? Would it have been sin? Yes. The point is, it is sin when you or I know what we are to do, but stay where it’s “comfortable.” How comfortable are you?
The kingdom of God is good news for now.
It’s now we enter the kingdom so we can experience it eternally. It’s through the preaching of it people enter it, and it’s by believing in Jesus and his kingdom we enter eternity. Eternity begins now. JESUS HAS THE POWER TO DELIVER YOU INTO ETERNITY WITH HIM. We call it heaven.

Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
Jesus is the Messiah, the savior of the world proved by his power over the natural. He has the power to deliver your body from the bondage of sickness. Jesus has power over the supernatural. He has the power to deliver your mind from tormenting demons and darkness. Jesus has power over eternity. Jesus can deliver you from the kingdom of darkness and bring you into the kingdom of God. Which do you need today?
